What company do you think makes the best pistol.
Smith and Wesson
Gloc
Heckler and Koch
sig saur
Walther
or any other company.

Not sure what you want it for. For home defense you are better off with a shotgun. For carrying around purposes I'd feel a lot better with the reliability and safety of a revolver. I've got a Ruger Blackhawk that's every bit as good as a S&W and probably a couple of hunderd bucks less expensive.

Agreed on the shotgun, best all around home defense weapon. For a 1st time handgun owner I'd also go with a revolver, I'd suggest a nickle plate(not chrome)2'' barrel 38....it's low maintenance, low tech, and mobile. But my choice for a side arm would be a glock 40 caliber.

Yea my friend is a police officer and the gloc 40 is what they carry.

I have a glock 40 and I love it!

Concur on the shotgun being the best choice for home defense.

XD-40 or maybe the XD-9. But my 12ga is the home defense weapon of choice. I think the pumping of it would scare most robbers out of the house. The handgun is for cleanup

Kimber Pro Carry .45 A.C.P. or Ultra Carry .45. A.C.P. if you have a smaller hand. I'm strapped as we speak.

I've always wanted a Model 1911 Colt .45 and an over/under Mauser 12g with rifled barrels.

I grew up around 9mm Brownings, so if they're still made, I'd like one of those too.

For safety go with a double action automatic. And if you get a Glock DO NOT keep it loaded as it has no safety. It does but it's a button on the trigger, if you pull it it fires. Makes no sense.

Shotgun is the best choice

I have a Glock Model 22 as a duty weapon

At home I have a sig .45, S&W .357, and HK .40

The HK is great target shooting gun, but I carry the SIG in the truck because that large muzzle has a great psychological effect

I've always found grenades to be very effective and pretty easy to use. Land mines work well also :) Really though my buddy has a glock and it's awesome! I'm getting one soon and am pumped about it!

I have always considered the Glock, expecially if kept tucked into the waistband in the small of your back, a great way to shoot yourself in the a$$ because of the safety. Obviously it is a reliable weapon, based on the number of police forces that use it, but for that reason it is not for me.

Personally, I like the Walther .40, although the name carries a little more price than some of the others.

Go with the Sig, personally...i only own long guns, except for my P-229 is .40S&W, its a shooter, and fairly light if you intend to carry it.

To follow all the posts on the first page, a shotgun is your best bet every time, because
1) a shell full of 9 shot won't go through the walls and possibly hit your family, dog, cat, what have you, and
2) Regardless of the situation, if you poleaxe a robber/burglar/home invader/assailant with 2 .40 caliber rounds to the chest, it will immediately become a murder investigation. Though you will probably be cleared of this (provided one of the above were the case), you will still need to spend the money to retain an attorney to advise you, and your name will be publicized, and it will make the unpleasantness of killing someone increase even more.

If you give them a body full of 9 shot from 15 feet away, they will run, and end up at a local hospital. In the meantime, you have called the police over, advised them of what just happened, and your life will be a hell of alot smoother than had you shot someone dead in your kitchen

Would have to disagree with you. If I have reached the point of shooting someone, I have reached the point of wanting them dead.
