Something I'm extremely fascinated by is the discovery of new large species of animals not known to the Western world; mainly because I want one of each of them.
Wildlife Extra News - Giant rat and new marsupial amongst 40 new species discovered in Papua New Guinea
Those animals have never seen a human before, most likely, so they had no fear of them. Good thing Vol in IL. doesn't have plans to build a golf course near the crater of Mount Bosavi.
Although not "animals", the discovery of the remains of the Hobbits of Flores was one of the few things I have ever seen that completely blew my mind. The idea that 3 foot humans used to live on an island with pygmy elephants was just unbelievably incredible to me.
Hobbit-Like Human Ancestor Found in Asia
I will continue to add articles, (although I'm sure some will troll this thread) as most of the new discoveries are occurring in Indonesia and New Guinea. Scientists are on an exploratory tear due to the quickening deforestation of these regions of the globe and they are finding so many unknown species. Fascinating stuff!
