For pc at least you can redefine where the iTunes library is or at least add folders. in this case you'd add the backup drive as your folder. They are cheap and provide a good backup should something go wrong like a stolen laptop.

That's on DVD's so the autoscan doesn't get me busted. Although the way they hand it out free now i don't worry with it.

I'll have to research further for a Mac. I'm sure I should be able to do something similar. I'm just used to hooking up the other Mac devices and syncing. Wouldn't see that as possible with an external hard drive.

You can make your mac not sync when you connect.

Absolutely they make wireless drives now. Hadn't thought about that because mine isn't but for a laptop user it'd probablly be worth the extra coin. You've got a bunch of options.

I know that process. Just have never placed iTunes data on an external drive other than my other Mac devices - iPad, iPods.
