Let me start out by saying I'm a season ticket holder in Sec O Row 27, which is 2 rows from the isle break or whatever, along with 3 other of my friends. We're all in our mid 20s age range. We're very passionate about Tennessee Football. This past weekend during the Buffalo game, right after the kickoff. (maybe the 2nd play of the game) an usher from behind starts yelling for myself and my friends to sit down. (We're not standing on the benches or anything, where just standing where our seats are) He gets my attention cause I'm wearing a #16 jersey, so he singles me out and says I need to sit down so the other 2 rows behind me can see. I turn around and I reply "I'm sorry for any inconvience, but I'm a season ticket holder & no where on my ticket does it say I'm not allowed to stand and cheer" he in turns says "would you like for me to come down there and assist you in sitting in your seat." I understand the people who may have been behind our group couldn't see clearly, but all they had to do was stand. I don't think I'm doing anything wrong. My group did sit for majority of the Buffalo game, but we told those behind us that when Georgia, LSU and other SEC teams come to Neyland that we will be standing for the better part of the game. (80-90% of entire game) Non of us drink, curse or any of that nature. We're just passionate fans. Do you think we're in the wrong here? Looking for any suggestions.

Thanks,
Go Vols!

It's stupid. I wish he would have "assist(ed) you in sitting in your seat." What the hell right does he have to do that anyway? They spend all of their time *****ing at people for standing, rather than helping when some rows are about 10 people too thick. Useless.

Nothing wrong with what you were doing imo. People need to get the thongs out if their a**es and get over it.

Hmmm...Did you get the usher's name? I can't believe you would have been standing that much during this game, and to me you have a right to stand for big plays, no matter what.

Send a letter to the school, Can't hurt

The ushers are promoting an atmosphere I don't support and are probably lowering the number of season ticket holders. They're not doing their jobs. Nobody was acting unsafely.

UT needs to let go of the people who never stand up (without handicap / disability )

Really, standing up for every play doesn't make much sense, unless the people in front of you are. Of course on big plays in the game, 3rd downs, 4th down, TD attempts, it shouldn't be an issue. Standing up for a 2nd down in Q2 with a 20 pt lead on Buffalo is a little silly, imo.

Nothing wrong with standing. That being said, no reason to stand just for the sake of standing either. I stand up a lot and I am probably one of the more vocal fans anywhere I am. I do, however, try to be respectful of others at the same time. If the action is lagging and I can sit down and see just as well when they are in the huddle, during timeouts, or even during play if its just a 1-yard up the middle, I do so. If there is any reason to be excited, though, I will be on my feet regardless of who wants me to sit. If this situation occurs again, I would just be polite to the usher and sit until the next play starts. If he wants to waste his breath telling you to sit down 100 times a game, let him "show his authority." The only other respectful way to handle it is to get everyone in front of you to stand up. That way he has to get them to sit down first.

I'm currently in the process of sending a letter to Chancellor Cheek. I have been unable to find an email for our new AD Dave Hart. I've look all around the UT Directory but I haven't been able to find one for him. I do have the usher's name, but out of what little respect I have for him, I'm going to withhold that info. I'm not out to try and have the man fired or anything. I just think he went a little overboard in how he tried to handle the situation. Like I said before, my group that I sit with aren't unruly fans. 2 of us are past students so we're just used to standing for the majority of the game. We're not trying to upset anyone or make the game less enjoyable for anyone else. We're all 1st time season ticket holders. Just excited young fans trying to have as much fun as possible.

Saturday is not against Buffalo. Hopefully our stands will be so loud you won't be able to hear an usher telling you to sit down.

Asking if he needs to come and sit you down is going WAY overboard imo! People like that are just being Aholes for the sake of being an Ahole.

Full stadium, night game, ESNP crew, SEC rival...it should be INSANE inside Neyland Saturday night, period!!!

The people in the first row should tell dooley and the players to sit since they can't see

Who cares if you don't have to stand to cheer loud? People jumping around and screaming, the whole ground shakes.

I've been to one game where the crowd was standing the whole time, and it was one of the best sports experiences I've had: USA v Trinidad & Tobago at LP Field in Nashville. 3-0 win, and we were all still standing at the end.

That said, I understand wanting to stand in key, exciting moments and sit during some of the standard run of play. But if somebody is standing up, that shouldn't be a problem. On important third downs on defense, everyone who is able should stand. In regular situations, it doesn't matter much to me what you do, as long as you don't complain about others making a different choice. Personally, I love it when people in front of me stand up, because it gives me an excuse to do the same.

I agree with both parts.

Most exciting football game I've ever attended was va tech and miami night game when both were ranked in the top ten. Everybody sat down twice - at halftime and the end of the game.

I agree with you on all those situations, and you don't have to stand to be loud. I've been to games where this has happened to me, and it can be annoying if it's during most of or the entire game. Got a bad knee, and it's rough to try and stand on every play, or even get up every other play. It does go both ways. The people behind also have just as much right to not have their view blocked for most of the game. Again, you can do everything but jump up and down seated as well as you can standing. The noise is the thing.
