I know its early for this discussion but what does people think on Lofton staying for his senior year or not. At the end of last year he was a pure shooter but he has developed that other part of his game so this has me wondering. Especially if he wins National Player of the Year or SEC Player of the Year.

A lot can happen between now and the end of the year but my guess is that it's doubtful.

I agree. One thing the NBA doesn't need is small 2 guards who can't defend all that well.

He will not win national player of the year. Let's face it, he is not the best player in the country. I can think of 3 players right off of the top of my mind who are more deserving of that award to this point in Tucker (Wisconsin), Durant (Texas), and James (Marquette). He could, and should, win the SEC player of the year, however. In my opinion, he is the best player in this conference, but not quite at the level of best player in the country. Maybe after one more offseason under Pearl and he could be... :whistling:

He may be small, but so is Ben Gordon (Bulls sixth man). He could very easily fill that same role as a guy they bring off the bench for nothing more than instant offense. Gordon is more athletic, but Loftin is clearly a better shooter. Think Hornacek as well.

That said... I can't think of a reason why he would want to leave early because he probably wouldn't improve his draft status either way.

"I don't even want to think about that!"

I think that Lofton owes it to himself by staying the full time. He could rack up some awesome stats next year when the freshmen are all grown up and demand attention.

Yeah, next year it should be a good time to be a BasketVol. :dance2: (And to be a fan of the Vols hoopsters.) I think he'll stay around for his senior year.

HAHA hes a great player for you guys but i mean this may be a spark of hope for the gamecocks next year. WE SUCK THIS YEAR AT BBALL. But in all seriousness i hope he stays for you guys. Hes a great player that good use another year to develop into an elite guard for the NBA

I think he is definitely gone after this season. He is one of the top 10 or 15 players in the nation, and he has shown he can be more than just a 3-point sharpshooter. Even though I think he has a lot he could improve on, he has a lot of qualities that will garner NBA attention. I think he would be a late 1st, or early 2nd round pick if he left, and I don't think he would pass that up.

I think he would pass it up. He could improve so much and be a lottery pick the next season which equals tons more money

actually you guys keep saying how lofton isn't athletic, and not a good defender... he averaged 2 steals a game last year, a very good mark. and not all of his highlight shots are 3's he can make some amazing layups and he is good at driving to the basket. you need to be athletic to drive to the basket like he does.

that's very true. I'm not much of an NBA fan, I'm just used to college players having 1, maybe 2 good years then leaving. I guess it all depends on where he is projected to go, and how sure he is that he could be a lottery pick next season. I know he has a lot of work to do before he is NBA ready, but so have a lot of other players that have left early.

I really don't see why Lofton wouldn't come back next year. He's made some big strides improving his game from last season to this season, he's only going to improve some more.

Plus I think that he wants to win something here at UT.
