Why should we not be in contention next year?

Lord, we're only 3 days into the new year..

I should have been more clear. I meant that in 2000, we clearly worked out that Clausen was our man by the end of the season. That kind of resolution didn't occur this season. It still might, but we won't know till we roll into Cal.

The lines are the foundation for success on both sides of the ball. I just don't see anything to suggest that either line will be much better next year. Maybe some very young guys will dazzle us?
that's where i am as well. i think our skill position players will be pretty good again. we will be weak up front again, that's my feeling.

I'm not a NegaVol, and I'm not Pollyanna, but I'm breaking it down like this:

Another four (or more) loss season in 2007 and Fulmer is gone, which means, given the brutality of the schedule, that the Vols might be playing the 2008 Outback or Capital One or Chick-Fil-A bowl with Fulmer's job on the line.

Dropping LSU from the schedule helps a bit, but I don't really see UT doing any better than 2-2 vs. Florida, Georgia, Kentucky (not exactly an automatic win anymore), and South Carolina.

i don't even think a four loss season matters. as long as he gets to a bowl game (be it the BCS championship or the mere Weed Eater Bowl), hamilton won't fire fulmer. we're stuck with him. i'd really like to get gruden, but that's just wishful thinking w/ hamilton at the helm

I don't get all of this "I'd like to get Gruden" talk. For people who are so dominated by the "what have you done for me lately" mentality, I'll ask you what Gruden has done for anyone lately.?

Why? Gruden's not a nice gent from what I've seen, and he is probably the most overrated head coach in the league. He's not very good, IMO.

Now, if you wanted to talk about Norm Chow, Bobby Petrino, Ron Rivera, etc, I would love to do so.

i'd take one of them as well. i think Gruden's a better coach than he's credited for. I don't think Petrino is going anywhere though. I like Gruden because he has that fire and passion with his players the game that Fulmer doesn't have anymore IMO.

I disagree completely with your asessment of the situation. Hamilton will go with the big money, and the big money expects this thing to turn or else.
Next year is the whole ballgame for Fulmer.

Please tell me how Gruden's record @ TB does not mirror the very reason you are calling for CPF to get fired.

2002- 12-4 SB Champs
2003- 7-9
2004- 5-11
2005- 11-5 lost in 1st round
2006- 4-12

But he's screams alot...

didn't fulmer get him where he's at though? i just don't see it happening because of that. it would take another no bowl season IMO.

I have been a tampa fan since 88. Gruden-ehh well he won a superbowl with Dungys team and then took and old team to the playoffs. His offensive system is complex-but I haven't seen it win. Is he firey-hell yes and that would be a welcome change. I am just flat on UT football right now. I am tired of "with another offseason of hard work" and all that crap. Unfortunalely, with grad school I will not be able to attend for a couple of years so that is upsetting but it could work out for the better if those are "rebuilding" years. I am still bummed though )and yes I will still be a Vol fan no matter what)

i think for one thing, TB is not a good place to be for the NFL. I think it's easier in college football, but ultimately I think programs get stale. That's what's wrong w/ Fulmer. Same thing in Michigan w/ Carr. I just can't compare any NFL records to D1 College

Don't read too much into that notion. Hamilton's job is to keep the money flowing. Tennesse's money is patient but it's patience has worn thin. Those of you who so badly want change will know for sure after this coming season. As the song says...It's now or never....

You're advocating a coach come to UT with no college HC experience and a questionable NFL record. All I'm asking for are reasons why that makes sense besides he screams loud.

(and to OWB: is skinny)
