I didn't know he could do it positive only. I think that would be the best possible option as well, taking away one less alternative for people to exact "internet revenge" if it's doable that way.

From first glance, I believe I could do positive only.

Tell me mods, is it possible to change it to a system that measures responses to the poster? For example, if finevol starts a thread and it gets lots of responses, i.e. starts a good discussion, then he can get some style points (hate to use that phrase, but it fits). Or maybe if you post a statement and you get quoted and replied to a lot, you get points.

I think measuirng people's desire to pick up your issue or reply to you, without regard to subjective impressions of whether its "worthy," is a better objective measure of contributiion.
Some get quoted because their posts are great, others are quoted because the posts are terrible. How would one distinguish these?

I think this would be an enormous mistake. Its bad enough that we take pot shots at each other and the threads spin off into ego battles, leaving the original issue in the dust. But if you do this, then you virtually guarantee that even remotely controversial thread will quickly devolve into name-calling and complaints that people are being targeted or unfairly criticized, etc., followed by people defending their criticisms, and on and on and on.

I just think you will really regret it if you do it.

i agree with law here...i just wish there were a way to give him credit for such a well thought out post ... hmmm....

I think I am okay with Freak's later idea to make it positive only. As long as no negative, then folks won't be retaliating through it.

I find it awfully amusing that a site that allows so much negativity about our team, our players our coaches and our fans, wouldn't allow a silly rating system to reflect negativity toward our posters.

I don't even know if I would use it. I voted in favor of it, but that's before reading about everyone's "concerns".

I'm not against people being positive certainly. God knows I would give every poster that had something positive to say about our team and coaches positive ratings, but I think that if someone is constantly bashing, that I should be able to reflect my opinion of that poster in my rating of them.

It's amazing to me how everyone will personally attack people that aren't here to defend themselves, but when someone is actually brave enough to stand up to those people that ARE here and engage them in discussion, debate and even confrontation, there are people that frown upon it and others that will "ignore" you.

There is certainly a group of posters here that I disagree with, but I have NO ONE on my ignore list. I would never take their words away from the discussions simply because I disagree with them or the way that they say what I disagree with. (Please someone forward this to Volunteer Hillbilly since he has done this to me.)

I don't say much about the things I disagree with here, but I thought I would take this chance, when we are asked, to vent my feelings. This is a great place to post and it would be boring without some disagreement. There are some things I could do without, and would do differently if I were in charge, but I'm not and that's cool with me.

I am a polarizing poster. I would fully expect to have a high "negative" rating because of my defense of Fulmer and this team, players, fans, administration etc. I would be ok with that. To me, this message board and the things I type here are "character work". By that, I mean that I take "OrangeSquare" as a character and anything he says or is said to him do not affect "Scott" when I lay my head down at night.

Some people here are overly affected by words that strangers type onto a screen. Others enjoy engaging those they agree and disagree with, and don't let things on here bother them.

Put me in that last group, and for those of you that don't like "Orange Square", IF Freak allows you to, put a negative rating under my name if that's what you want to do. It won't bother "Scott" in the slightest and I won't lose any sleep.

Not having read this whole thread, but parts of it, it doesn't seem like a good idea. They used to have a similar deal at another board, and folks that liked/disliked another would take all their time to +/- someone they liked or disliked. Needless to say, that is no more. Everyone here knows, after a few days or weeks, who is liked or disliked in their mind. Maybe it should be left at that.

We used this on a board i used to post to a lot (not sports related). It is a nice novelty to add to the interaction of the board. They implemented a timer on the rating system, so you could only give someone karma once an hour or so.

I think that is a necessity with a karma system. It forces you to be considerate with your dishing out ratings since you won't be able to rate anyone else for another hour. It leads to just holding on to your karma points until you see something really great or dumb.

If I remember correctly, even that created too much controversy in the end and they switched to a system where you could only rate posters up, not down.

I voted for it, might as well try it out and see if it works here or not. If not then just pull it off, no harm.

Well, not sure why it's necessary, but if it is enacted, I def. think it needs to be positive reps only. And I expect this will be the last post in this thread because I am beginning to notice that many threads seem to die after I post! Thus, I don't want to get negative reps as a "thread-killer!"

In my experiences on other boards that had such a feature, it was often removed. Its mostly used as a popularity meter...if you said something with merit that is negative about the team or a person, you'd get a demerit. Basically, it rewards the homers (orangesquare).

Lets leave it off. There is no point to having it, and I dont see how the board would be better off if we did have it.

I may suggest a monetary reward for the poster/posters that has/have the most positive points at the end of the year. But I will have to consult my accountant first to see what the tax implications would be.:)

I just don't want someone who posts FACTS get negatively repped because some people don't like the FACTS.

Can't you tell who makes quality posts by reading their posts? Do people really need their egos massaged by a message board?

P.S. Try saying massaged by a message board really fast 10 times :p

One idea might be that you could only leave positive rep points and disable the negative. That way you could only reward and not try and punish people you disagree with.

we're all winners! :dance2:

Can we make the hole on golf courses bigger too? :p

I think I just lost some rep points.
