According to Gotlieb an assitant was interviewed first. That assistant lied and then Bruce felt he had to lie.

So Bruce basically had a choice to either tell the truth and end the career of that assistant as well as punishment similar to UCONN or risk it all by lying and trying to cover it up. He basically attempted to save the assistants job instead of throwing him to the wolves. I have much more respect for Bruce if this is the case and I think the NCAA lying rule is garbage. I still think Bruce had to go, but this whole thing feels like a set up and the NCAA is punishing Bruce for his Iowa stunt.

The way Gotlieb breaks down the bbq rule makes you realize how dumb that is. Selby and Craft PAID THEIR OWN MONEY to come to UT. Bruce is having a cook out with the team at his home. What is he suppose to say, "**** off you are juniors. You and your family should go eat and Mcdonalds."

The NCAA is punishing an informant? I love Bruce Pearl, but this story is either a reach or is the biggest example of poor decision making ever. And this is coming from the guy starting a thread wishing we could keep him because he's more exciting than other "winning" coaches.

Ah, the selflessness of Bruce. He would take a bullet for everybody on this board, you know. He loves Tennessee fans that much.

An informant who basically made stuff (ie lied) up and recorded a kid who never did anything wrong. The NCAA looked like fools after that investigation. Not to mention Bruce got on the wrong side of just about every coach in the nation for being a rat.

I don't, sorry. Don't lie. If you have an assistant coach that feels the need to lie, he shouldn't be on your staff.

it's really not that hard to say you can't show up due to rules.

Easy enough to say from your position, but if it is a friend who you have worked with for years it is different. You think about the person, their wife, their kids. An assistant who gets hit for lying is basically out of college bball for life.

Which assistant was it? At the end of the day, it's still a business. You have to make the best business decision for yourself and Bruce didn't do that. Now, he's unemployed.

Point taken Scotty... I was underinformed about his investigation. I still doubt the validity of the story.

Why would you have more respect for Bruce for taking a bullet when one of his Assistants lied about something so stupid? The fact is that Bruce knew it was wrong when it happened and did it anyway, asking the recruits to keep their mouths shut along the way.

And no, you do not tell the recruits to F-off...You tell them you want them to come but it is against the rules. If you feel its necessary, you hold a function in a place where they can be.

But the point at which you find yourself looking at a picture of your own house and denying that you know where it is is probably the point at which you should realize that there's no way it's going to fly.

And why'd the assistant lie in the first place? Hadn't Pearl talked with his staff about their testimony? There's way too much of a pattern with Pearl for me to swallow that the Big Cookout Picture Lie was just an act of selflessness on his part.

Once again I guarantee most coaches don't do that. When Bruce tried to get Craft to lie he was already screwed. That was a last ditch effort to save himself. We would be in the same place today even if he didn't do that.

Supposedly you are not suppose to be able to talk with other coaches before the next one talks to the NCAA. I'll admit it doesn't excuse, but it at least gives meaning to why.

I think you're the one being naive if you think Pearl would follow the rules by not discussing testimony while at the same time creating an elaborate plan to cover up other NCAA rules violations.

Pretty sure it came out that he told them the day of that it was illegal.

Does not matter what other coaches do. This case matters bc of what Pearl did and how he responded to it. He tells the truth and he gets a slap on the wrist and still has a job.

I'm pretty sure that is partly what NCCA was mad about. That he did talk to his assistant. That is how he knew he lied. Otherwise the coaches would have had conflicting stories.

Bruce wasn't interview first by NCAA.

Yes, but that was not when he convinced them to lie to the NCAA. At least thats how I have taken it.

If one of the assistants put his own career at risk by lying to the NCAA, then surely he did so because that's what he thought he was supposed to do. I don't really know that it matters who lied first.

But wasn't Pearl the only one hit with unethical conduct? If this story is true, why wasn't the assistant cited as well?

But you honestly think Bruce didn't tell him to lie beforehand and was just trying to save his assistant? I find that incredibly hard to believe.

That is a question for Doug Gotlieb. I'm just repeating what he said on his podcast.

I assumed that the coaches do not know what they are being interviewed on before hand. At least thats how Bruce was trying to sell it.

I think Gottlieb just got some information from the Pearl camps spin machine...more to come I am sure..time for Pearl to try and start damage control
