World Cup Soccer........Boring as H*ll

You are out of your mind if you dont think someone like Labron could practice for a year or two, throw on some gloves and cover the goal better than that clown from the UK. EB wouldnt play for his own HS? If that was the case, as a Georgia tax payer, I would personally petition the coach to be fired.

:lolabove: that's good stuff

Kind of like that UK goalie yesterday? That will go down as the biggest garbage goal of all time. So you are telling me that Landon Donovan is the best athlete in the USA because he can run up and down a field for 90 minutes?

What about that USA goalie a few years back? The jets gave him a tryout as a punter and he couldnt even do that.

Playing Lebron in goal is a much different situation than playing him on the field.

I think soccer is great for elementary, junior high and high school. It gives the runts, too short to play BB and too small to play football (the real football), a sport to play.:)

this is what kills me. why do some feel the need to compare like this? they're completely different sports so who cares if an athlete from one could come in and play in the other. more than likely they wouldn't be able to. i love american football above all else and nothing will ever take it's place, but it's incredibly naive to say that you could just simply put one of those guys on a soccer club's roster and after a set amount of practices expect them to go out and play professionally.

of course, this kind of thing doesn't just exist here. people in europe have exactly this kind of attitude about our sports as well.

I don't think you realize the skills that must be developed to play this game. Donovan isn't the better athlete of the people you mentioned but it took years to develop those skills. You can't pick them up in a year, they have to be developed as you grow up.

how about terrance cody? i bet he would make for a terrific midfielder. or better yet, put him back as keeper. he's bound to make some saves back there.

Yet most Americans have zero problem watching baseball. It seems to me like most of the people that have this mindset for soccer are conformists. It's cool to join the group that constantly responds to the sport with, "you're boring, my country doesn't care about you".

1. No, there's no way Lebron could practice for a "year or two" and cover the goal better than the UK goalie. EB could play for his HS if he wanted to, I don't know if he did, do you? In a one on one setting, Landon Donovan would put 9 out of 10 shots in the net on Lebron. Conversely, Lebron would destroy Donovan on the basketball court.

2. Landon Donovan is a great soccer player, Lebron James is a great basketball player, Tiger Woods is a great golfer. All three are great athletes, among the best in the world at their particular sport. If it's your assertion that any athlete who's spent years, decades, perfecting their craft, could strap on and play another sport at an equally high level after only "a year or two of practice", you're the one who's delusional.

3. Some athletes who've tried, don't do so well. Tony Romo tried to qualify for a PGA tournament, he didn't even make it out of the preliminary qualifying rounds.

Watching Germany was fun for me.

Watching the clash between the US and England end in a 1-1 tie....not so much. It seemed very sloppy.

That's my only complaint, when they end in a draw. Just like I hate watching an American Football game for three hours, only to end in a tie. I wish at the very least, they would play overtime, or play a shootout. Determine a winner. JMO

Never understood that argument. It's so irrational for soccer to require a winner every game. First of all, overtime could go on for hours which would be terrible considering the players would probably die. Second, a shootout is hated by most soccer fans because it decides a winner on a pure crap shoot. It's just a guessing game.

what I am trying to say is that the reason why Americans dont like soccer is because the best athletes dont play it here in USA and the constant flaling about whenever contact is made gets old (yes I saw some slides that looked painful) and then add the thousands of annoying horns blaring that sound like a swarm of bees. Can you imagin sitting next to one of those horns? Or sitting behind one of those hooligans with a three foot tall hat. I went to an Ireland soccer game years ago and had a full beer thrown on me when IRE scored

The reason why I watched the game was because I work with some Brits who have been talking about this like its the 2nd coming of christ, and then it ends in a tie. I am sitting there thinking "This is the best the Brits could throw at us?"

I'm not saying it is right or wrong. I've got no creative solutions for soccer. Frankly, I don't care all that much. It just sucks to invest that much time watching the "game of the century" end in a tie. Worse than that, neither team could cooridinate much in the way of offensive passing.

Not a huge fan of shootouts, although - at the end of day, it is used to determine a winner in the biggest games. An extra period of something like 20-25 minutes wouldn't be a terrible thing to try and determine a winner.

Just like the NFL, I don't like a draw, but they do try to get a winner.

there already is an overtime before going to a shootout (two 15min periods IIRC). Thing is it's not needed until you get to elimination rounds

if you mean an extra OT on top of that before a shootout then I disagree

This is what I'm thinking of. Only change I would want, is to make it for every game. Shootouts can be argued.

They use it in the biggest games because they are forced to have a winner. They don't really have a choice at that point.

I know that. I'm saying if a shootout is legitimate enough to determine a winner in the biggest games, then to me, it is legitimate enough to decide a winner in any game. Whether personally, I like it or not.
