Overrated Bands

Here's the thing with the Beatles. They have been so popular and influential for so long that in a way they can only be considered overrated because there is no where to go but down. Can anyone honestly say they are underrated?

No one has influenced music, recording, and pop culture the way they did. We will never see anything like Beatle Mania again. I understand that not everyone likes them and to each his own but you cannot deny the overall influence, not just musically, that is still happening today.

Its easy to claim that they are overrated when they have been at the top so long.

It dont bother me at all when someone says Nirvana sucks, or is overrated. I dont blame a soul for feeling that way. After the shotgun blast, things have changed and alot of fans and stuff came along with that.

But for being a kid growing up, there was nothing as real and as dangerous going on at that point in rock and roll. When you are growing up in a small town, dissillusioned with rock, and listening to Elvis and Buddy Holly..wondering if any band can ever be as good as the Clash..then a band like Nirvana comes along. It was special.

Everything gets played out and myths get made. But in the end, Nirvana's "Unplugged" stands up to anything that any band has ever made. As a live, one take, music performance. That is with the warts and all.

Oh well, I have let my emotions take over now!

In a high school of 2,000 people in 1993 in Maury County Tennessee, there were exactly 3 Nirvana fans. 3!

And we could not have been happier about that.

Only wish they would have never gotten so big.

But yeah, sure, they are overrated now. They have to much legend on them. I guess folks forget how much music sucked at that point before it all went DOWN in 1991. I mean, IT WENT DOWN. We got rid of Poison and Xtreme with four chords on the radio.

Wish these kids today had something with half as much soul.

someone has a scary shrine somewhere....dang!

I just cant stand Pearl Jam's voice. I guess thats more of a opinion than anything. There is one song of theirs that I like but I cannot think of the name of it for the life of me. It wasn't on the radio. I am pretty sure it was on "ten"

This thread honestly doesn't have much point. It is all personal taste. I hate Nickleback but ya know what, there is ppl all around the world who love them. I hate Pearl Jam and I know that is pretty unpopular. I like many of the bands people have listed on here. To each his own. Grateful dead had a cult following. Most of the people who dislike them dislike them because they are a "jam band" or hippies like them. Im not a hippie by anymeans just enjoy great guitar players and the Dead defiently had that. Like I said earlier, to each his own.

I would like to know what some people who are big fans of the Beatles think about Coldplay.

Comparing those two is blasphemy. Success isn't the same, lyrically isn't the same, etc. They dont sound anything alike

It's only music. Jesus wasn't a member of the Beatles.

Who has been as successful as the Beatles? (I'm not just talking about album sales)

I don't think he was looking for a side by side comparison.

Blasphemy can be used for other things besides religion

If I remember correctly 3 of the top selling artists of all time is Beatles, Michael Jackson, and Elvis

and thats one I will personally put on the list, Elvis.

If you sucess comes off singing other peoples songs you overrated in my book. IMO a successful solo artist should write their own songs.

You are forgetting cultural influence. There is more to the discussion that just the music?

How else could you judge success? They all 3 toured internationally, all 3 had off the chart record sales, all considered icons, all 3 sold out every show they ever played, etc

I'm not saying the Beatles and Coldplay are the same and a side by side comparison is absurd but if you can't see the influence the Beatles have had on them in particular then you are missing the boat, some of the arrangements have similarities that are instantly recognizable.

The Beatles style in music changed and evolved throughout their careers dramatically, I see them similar to Pink Floyd in this respect.

Theres a lot of U2 and Radiohead influence as well.

Widespread Panic
Jay-Z
Radiohead (although Karma Police is an incredible song)
Lil Wayne
The Rolling Stones (although Beast of Burden is an incredible song)
Bruce Springsteen
The Beatles (yes, I think the Beatles are overrated. Before you curse me up and down, do a little self-test. Think about how many Beatles songs you would put on a playlist. Now think about how many Led Zeppelin or Bob Marley songs, for example, you would put on a playlist. If you're being honest and you're not totally lame, the difference between the latter and the former wil be substantial, and it illustrates a point. The Beatles music hasn't stood the test of time. Thus, it was never that good in the first place. Thus, they are wildly overrated.).

Ok..it is your opinion the Beatles music is overrated. I will give you that one, but saying it hasn't stood the the test of time is about as uninformed as anything I've heard.

The Eagles

They are good but not great IMHO. The prices they charged for tickets for a couple of their tours is evidence of them being overrated.
