This may sound stupid, but I think the 2004 Trojans was the best college football team to ever play. I think the Hurricanes had the better pro prospects though.

Now that someone chimed in, I will to and say I think the 2001 Canes win by a larger amount than people think.

I'd say 41-13 or something like that. I know that sounds ridiculous, but I think their secondary was good enough to effectively stop the Trojan receivers.

It would be a fun matchup. Jarrett and Smith was a tough 1-2 duo, not to mention Reggie Bush catching out of the backfield. Byrd was a great college tight end also.

The Hurricanes defense was nasty though so you could be right.

I remember watching the Boston College game against Miami in 2001. That was one of the best games that I can remember.

That was the part which made you very aware of the coach of that team.

Against the big time opponents, there was literally nothing stopping the Canes. I'm having trouble thinking of a better secondary.

It was tough for an opposing QB to go against the likes of Rumph, Reed, and Buchanon. The front 7 was pretty dominant also.

And James Lewis. With Sean Taylor seeing playing time as well.

The rest of the defense was also good. So many impact pros it's ridiculous. They were simply exceptional on both sides of the ball. Their weak spot, was at quarterback with Ken Dorsey.

By the way, who was the linebacker who died between the 2001 and 2002 season? I'm pretty sure the 2001 team lost 11 starters, 10 to the pros, and one linebacker who died, but probably would have been drafted.

I think his name was Chris Campbell.

He was engaged to NBA guard Raja Bell's sister (who played hoops for the Lady Gators) when he was killed.
It was sad when he died. I absolutely loved watching the team in action during the season. The systematic destruction of Syracuse and Washington in back to back weeks was probably the most impressive thing I've ever seen from a college football team. I'm pretty sure both teams were top 15, and they won by a combined score of 124-7. It's simply unfair that they had that much talent on the team.

Yeah, that team was loaded.

A better matchup would be '01 Miami vs. '95 Nebraska.
I'd agree. They weren't included in the article because the last decade.

I still think Miami wins pretty easily. They were always the best at stopping the option, and this was the fastest, best defense of the group.

I had completely forgotten about that.

The "greatness" of that USC team gets overstated because of the way they demolished an OU team that had steamrolled everything in its path. All of the Auburn fans that scream and yell about not being included in the championship game that year forget that OU #1 in the BCS standings, not SC. The Trojans weren't that dominant for much of the regular season. They did play perfectly on a night when the Sooners flat sucked. The '01 'Canes would have beaten them by a couple of touchdowns.

Beat me to it.

Heck, people forget that the 2001 Miami team lost all their seniors and a ton of underclassmen to the draft and STILL won a national championship the next year.

Meh. 2001 Canes are definitely the better team. But if the '02 squad could lose to Ohio State, you can't completely count out the Trojans. I'd take Miami easily, but couldn't call it a lock with Coker coaching.
