Tennessee under NCAA investigation over use of recruiting hostesses

Actually, I think it may have started with a HS coach or AD...maybe one that went to a rival school. Maybe someone in Pahokee hasn't yet forgiven UT and Kiffin. If the NCAA had already interviewed multiple players in multiple states...some of whom aren't even UT commits...how many HS coaches, ADs, parents, relatives, and friends of the interviewees knew about the NCAA investigation long before we didh

Excellent point...

You do realize that a lot of the people that post on here are NOT actual UT fans, don't you?
Any reference to a fan based web site or message board by a media outlet is just stupid.
The NCAA would not and can not hold the University or athletic program liable for any thing posted here. The investigation came from the HS coach in SC reporting the girls being at the game.

That is just down right garbage.

If we were on a message board, and someone admitted a crime, of say murder. And if the authorities investigated it, and it turned out true, you bet your behind it would hold up in court.

Just because most things posted on a message board are false, and rumors. Doesn't mean that sometimes there really are truthful things on here. If the claims turn out to be true, you bet the NCAA would use the original findings on a message board to show they had cause to further an investigation.

Pretty good read from ESPN.

The New York Times reports that the NCAA inquiry into Tennessee's recruiting practices is focused on the school's use of hostesses, who in some cases traveled hundreds of miles to see high school prospects play. Since they are considered representatives of the university, hostesses are not allowed to recruit off campus. At issue is also whether they traveled on their own or were sent by the coaching staff.

Assuming the former, as some of the recruits contacted by the Times suggest, fallout should be minimal. Since Lane Kiffin was hired as coach one year ago, the Times says that the Vols have committed at least six secondary violations, with no repercussions. This should make it seven.

Dave Hooker of the Knoxville News-Sentinel provides some insight into Tennessee's recruiting approach, which involves group recruiting rather than assigning individual coaches to prospects. These relationships form the basis of any prospect's decision, and thus help maintain a commitment if a coach leaves. (The Vols have lost Eddie Gran to Florida State and Frank Wilson to LSU.) This approach also presumably alleviates the need for other enticements, such as attractive co-eds, though that demographic obviously doesn't hurt. As top RB prospect Marcus Lattimore of Byrnes (Duncan, S.C.) told the Times, "You don't want to go to a college where they ain't pretty."

At any rate, Kiffin himself has proven to be an energetic and enthusiastic recruiter, and the lure of playing for him, playing in front of 100,000-plus fan and competing for an SEC title is plenty to offer, even if the NCAA forces Tennessee to ban hostesses for a year or two. If the Vols haven't lost any recruits because of Gran's and Wilson's departures, they certainly won't lose any because of a lack of hostesses.

More!! This is from a 1987 article in SI. NCAA and NYT are a joke

A Hostess Honor Roll - 08.31.87 - SI Vault

Quotes from the Article:

"Valerie Wilson, Razorback Belles. Since Arkansas coach Ken Hatfield founded the Belles in '84, Valerie has been the group's only three-year member. She is one of the reasons, says Hogs recruiting coordinator Billy Gray, that Arkansas has landed every in-state player it has offered a scholarship since 1985."

"Yvette Hill, Solid Gold. She hostessed star fullback Stefan Scotton during his visit to Georgia Tech in February and followed up with a letter. Alas, Scotton soon committed orally to Vanderbilt. But he wrote Yvette back, she said, "spilling his guts to me" about how he had chosen Vandy only because his girlfriend was going there. The Tech coaching staff was alerted, and Scotton is a Yellow Jacket today. Says Yvette with a shrug, "They just seem to open up to us more than to the coaches."

Yes, I realize there are trolls on here however they are not the ones stating "I spent time with her" and "she get's around". You and I both agree the forum reference is stupid but I'm not worried about you and I. It's a recruit's coaches and parents that concerns me. The crap that gets started on here wasn't the cause of this but it hasn't helped.

We are not talking Police investigation. You are crazy if you think that ANY posts on a message board could be used by the NCAA against UT.

Not even close to being the same thing. If one of the hostesses were on here admitting things, that would be one thing. However, unsubstantiated rumors on a message board do not and would not ever constitute probable cause for an investigation. The NCAA's probable cause will arise from someone alerting the NCAA with actual knowledge of these events; not alerting the NCAA that people on VolNation think our hostesses are hot and one of them took a picture with Bryce Brown.

Scott Van Pelt defended UT and basically blamed the NCAA of headhunting Kiffin. He said there's more pressing topics the NCAA should be investigating instead of a few girls holding up a sign at an HS game.

He is a perfect example of the level of panic that this has caused. People do not think straight.

I don't see the big deal about the distance. Its only 200 miles. You can travel that in 2 hrs

Bama Belles are no longer a part of the Capstone - TideFans.com

"--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The belles were some of the most beautiful women on campus. My friend was a belle and I can't tell you how many times I've wished I was a 5 star recruit. I believe the NCAA gone to far with this one. athletes bring in millions for their schools and the NCAA let the NCAA wants to pretend that they're just like every other student. Ridiculous. "

I personally feel that UT should sue the crap out of the NCAA. I know, hasn't been done before, etc., but this is beyond ridiculous. Reggie Bush's family is provided an $800K house by a man with provable, extensive ties to a sports agent with whom Bush had extensive contact (and this is proven, his parents lived in the house for at least a year while he was a Trojan, heard it on sports talk while I lived in L.A.), and the NCAA does nothing...and then they investigage us for three girls who work for the admissions department holding up a sign?

This doesn't just stink to high heaven, it's libel, it's a witchhunt and a risibly uneven application of recruiting rules, and the NCAA should be held accountable for it. (I realize such is not likely but every now and then David slays Goliath in court.)

This really doesn't look good for you guys. I don't know the true severity of the problem but the perception of what was happening is going to stick like glue. I feel Kiffin made many enemies from the get go. Remember the old saying that " the squeaky wheel gets the oil" well you can add "its also the first one to be replaced" . Mostly UT has class in everything it does. I wonder about casting your loyalties so quickly behind someone of Kiffins reputation....but then again, he is your coach....

For those of you who claim ESPN hates Tennessee, I'd like you to know SVP sounds like he's got the Vol's back.

Just sayin.
