Actually, I think it may have started with a HS coach or AD...maybe one that went to a rival school. Maybe someone in Pahokee hasn't yet forgiven UT and Kiffin. If the NCAA had already interviewed multiple players in multiple states...some of whom aren't even UT commits...how many HS coaches, ADs, parents, relatives, and friends of the interviewees knew about the NCAA investigation long before we didh
You do realize that a lot of the people that post on here are NOT actual UT fans, don't you?
Any reference to a fan based web site or message board by a media outlet is just stupid.
The NCAA would not and can not hold the University or athletic program liable for any thing posted here. The investigation came from the HS coach in SC reporting the girls being at the game.
The New York Times reports that the NCAA inquiry into Tennessee's recruiting practices is focused on the school's use of hostesses, who in some cases traveled hundreds of miles to see high school prospects play. Since they are considered representatives of the university, hostesses are not allowed to recruit off campus. At issue is also whether they traveled on their own or were sent by the coaching staff.
Assuming the former, as some of the recruits contacted by the Times suggest, fallout should be minimal. Since Lane Kiffin was hired as coach one year ago, the Times says that the Vols have committed at least six secondary violations, with no repercussions. This should make it seven.
Dave Hooker of the Knoxville News-Sentinel provides some insight into Tennessee's recruiting approach, which involves group recruiting rather than assigning individual coaches to prospects. These relationships form the basis of any prospect's decision, and thus help maintain a commitment if a coach leaves. (The Vols have lost Eddie Gran to Florida State and Frank Wilson to LSU.) This approach also presumably alleviates the need for other enticements, such as attractive co-eds, though that demographic obviously doesn't hurt. As top RB prospect Marcus Lattimore of Byrnes (Duncan, S.C.) told the Times, "You don't want to go to a college where they ain't pretty."
At any rate, Kiffin himself has proven to be an energetic and enthusiastic recruiter, and the lure of playing for him, playing in front of 100,000-plus fan and competing for an SEC title is plenty to offer, even if the NCAA forces Tennessee to ban hostesses for a year or two. If the Vols haven't lost any recruits because of Gran's and Wilson's departures, they certainly won't lose any because of a lack of hostesses.

That is just down right garbage.
If we were on a message board, and someone admitted a crime, of say murder. And if the authorities investigated it, and it turned out true, you bet your behind it would hold up in court.
Just because most things posted on a message board are false, and rumors. Doesn't mean that sometimes there really are truthful things on here. If the claims turn out to be true, you bet the NCAA would use the original findings on a message board to show they had cause to further an investigation.

Not even close to being the same thing. If one of the hostesses were on here admitting things, that would be one thing. However, unsubstantiated rumors on a message board do not and would not ever constitute probable cause for an investigation. The NCAA's probable cause will arise from someone alerting the NCAA with actual knowledge of these events; not alerting the NCAA that people on VolNation think our hostesses are hot and one of them took a picture with Bryce Brown.
