Why was Brent Schaefer in JuCo again?

Because he was not as good as Ainge. Sure he had off field stuff but bottom line Ainge was better. I understood it that Newton was in line to be next behind Tebow until laptop incident. And he left mainly because he felt laptop thing was reason Brantley was placed ahead of him not his play. I don't really disagree either. Newton is a much better QB to run Florida's offense then Brantley. I can only guess the offense will be changing significantly next year under Brantley. I just want to know can Newton run our offense. I don't see Kiffin wanting designed run plays for the QB. He will have to read defenses and make progressions in a way Tebow or a spread QB would have to do only a handful of times in a game. It is not shotgun or under center that concerns me at all. It is just a different mental game. JMO

I think we all agree we don't want Stephens to be the guy next year though.

He probably won't be here next season.

Are you saying he's going to do well because Sam Bradford did?

Where did I say that? I explained why I brought up Sam Bradford. The dude(idk his sn) said the staff won't waste their time on someone with two years of eligibility. He then said Bradford was only good as a red shirt sophomore because he was in his second year with the system. I was just pointing out as a redshirt freshman(two years in the system) his numbers were awesome and his team won 11 games. I never said he would be Sam Bradford or even close. I was just pointing out that someone can be successful in only two years. Bradford a three star recruit was successful at the age of 19. I don't know why five star recruit Newton couldn't pick up the system by the time he is a 22 year old senior. He was basically saying Newton sucks because he is playing JUCO ball. I was also trying to point out that he was only playing JUCO ball because he got in trouble. Not because he sucks.

I am not saying nor have I said Cam Newton would be great. Was just saying that two years can be enough time and playing JUCO for his reason doesn't make him the regular JUCO player. It's not like he couldn't get a D1 offer. The dude was playing for Florida. He is tearing up the JUCO level and if Stephens can't steal the job from Crompton when he is throwing 0tds 5ints and 186 in the span of two games... I have no problem giving Newton a shot. It's that or Bray is starting as a true freshman because Stephen's clearly isn't good.

I think everyone would be best served leaving the talent evaluating up to the professionals (our coaches) instead of pretending to have any idea what you are talking about. The coaches will sign the player that is the best for our program in their eyes. 99.99999% of the members on this site wouldnt know true QB talent or fundamentals if it kicked them in the nuts. Put trust in our staff.....they will do what is best for our university and team. Thats a lot more productive than constantly arguing with other fans over a subject that neither side knows a damn thing about. Have a good night!

Thanks fill in mod.

If you need me to explain why I brought up Brent, I don't feel compelled to continue the debate.

Yeah, the dumb dumb got arrested and sucked when he returned(on a worse team). If you need me to explain why Tebow is better than Ainge, I as well have nothing to say.

Shaeffer was a backup, lit it up in JuCo, came back to the SEC and got beat out by a walkon. Quite an exciting journey.

And regardless of all the "unusual JuCo" stuff, the fact remains that there are scores of teams out there that could use a quality QB. He has only a handful of offers.

Well agreed but Brent was a career back up. He lost his job to Ainge. Newton was behind Tebow as a matter of natural order. He came later and Tebow was already established. It is a small difference maybe. But Newton never lost his job. He did not wait to find out. I actually think in the end Meyer would have given him the reigns if he kept his nose clean. But hey I am thankful he is impatient. I would not want to see UF with Newton the thought is scary.

Got beat out because he put up terrible numbers when given a shot. Schaeffer was never good. Let's not forget the same guys that recruited him also recruited Crompton and Stephens. I never said Newton will be even remotely good. The dude I was debating with was flat out saying Newton isn't good because he was playing JUCO and because he'd only have two years to learn the system. I was simply siting examples. Obviously he isn't playing JUCO because he sucked. The guy was a five star recruit and never got a chance to play because he was behind Tim Tebow. Apparently Brantley is the real deal awesome. I will say again I'm not saying he will be great and I am not saying he will be horrible. I was simply saying that those reasons to as to why he can't or won't be good are dumb.

I am not even saying I want Newton although I wouldn't mind it. Like I said though, if Stephen's can't beat out Crompton after his performances against UCLA/Florida than Bray better suit up.

If he (or Simms) turns out to be good, yippee. That doesn't really change why we're going after one of them. Groves' reasoning is right on. I don't think Groves said this guy will suck, just that the coaches don't expect him to be a superstar at Tennessee.

I can't find his current offer list so I don't know his offers. What schools are offering? With his history there will be some schools that are hesitant to offer and others that won't offer at all. If all the schools offering suck then he may very well suck. Was only debating with the one dude because I disagreed with his reasoning for why Newton isn't good.

Pretty sure he said he won't be good because A) he is JUCO and B) he will only have two seasons in the system.

I disagree that his reasoning is accurate. I still think his opinion is horrible based off his reasoning. I never said I expect them to be amazing or Super Stars. He flat out said the staff won't waste their time on them and that they pry wouldn't play. I will guarantee right now that Newton isn't going anywhere he won't get playing time. Just not going to happen. And like I said, it Stephen's can't pass Crompton after two horrific performances in a row... heck, three. Then Bray is starting next year as a true freshman. I wouldn't be surprised if Newton ends up on the roster for that reason alone because I don't know how he could possibly worse than a guy that can't jump Crompton on the depth chart.

I never said he wasn't any good. I said he's a stopgap for a guy that is going to be at a school longer than 2 years.

Kansas State and Mississippi State have offered. Wow, what powerhouses.

Major schools recruit properly and have 4 year guys in who have already learned the system. No major program would allow the program to get in a spot where a juco QB really makes sense. And then there is UT. Hmm how did this happen? :(

To be fair, most power houses have quarterbacks lined up for the future. I am not ready to call a 3-3 team that went 5-7 last year with Crompton starting and Stephens at back up a power house. Unfortunately for us, this is what it has come to. Stephen's who can't pass Crompton or Bray who is on the lanky side as a true freshman. One doesn't have a career and the other could have his career ended on one hit. I am willing to bring in Newton. I am not saying he will be good but he was good out of high school and never had the chance to play. Playing behind a quarterback that will probably go down as a top 5 quarterback of all time. This kid may very well have a lot of potential. You don't get that type of rating and recruited by Urban Meyer if you suck.

The coaches have tape from his high school, a little at UF, and at JuCo. They still haven't offered. Meanwhile, they offered I think 5 or 6 high school QBs. And saying he's better than Stephens doesn't mean he isn't a stopgap.

Jeff Tedford does pretty dang well with QBs and he's in a state that produces loads of good ones. Why'd he bring in Josh Ayoob?

Tebow is by far a better QB than Newton. UF would not be any better with Newton than they are with Tebow.

Offer list's for Juco's mean nothing. They are mainly getting recruited by programs that are in the same shape as us. Coming off a coaching change where the offense has completly changed or kids have transferred. I think this also plays into some of the success rates Mr. Groves loves to talk about.

I think what is different here is Kiffin's system is at least in his words is fairly simple to grasp. There is no reason Newton couldn't play in this offense. But you never know the full story. I don't think any of us know exactly what Kiffin is looking for. If he thinks one of these guys is going to start or he wants one here to push Stephens. Today on rivals he had some positive comments about Lamaison. So it isn't out of the question he doesn't take either Simms or Newton. It will play out soon enough....

Yeah, you're right. He may just be a "stopgap" but Stephen's is capable of sinking the Titanic. I'll take the game manager over the inconsistent slinger any day with the defense this team has. At the very least I think Newton could do a better job of not turning the ball over. Beggars can't be choosers next year looks to be a long year with Stephen's or Bray at quarterback. If those are the options I think it will be Stephen's but am hoping for Bray. Probably going to lose as much as we win either way so may as well break in the youngster. I don't want Newton's baggage but I also don't want to go 6-6.
