Chaz Coleman's future remains uncertain (CBS)

He probably was fine at PSU and caused no issues. Then came the big money from TN and he got dumb.
Time to move on and cut the kid. At this point he'll be a locker room cancer unless he has some real issue and the players actually know about it and support him but him flashing cash online and still not at summer practice probably killed any good will between teammates
It's also about the handlers in his ear. I would guess. The Sad State of NIL.

I just wonder what the angle is?

He can't play anywhere else this year and he's negotiated his money to mostly "back loaded" which means he won't collect more money or much more money if he doesn't play.

In what handlers mind is losing a year and losing more money the right move?

Don't get out much, do ya?
Give me a few good examples of top programs that have had a Nico/Boo/Chaz year in and year out as of late like we have. I’m no idiot. We’re now dealing with millionaire 18 year old morons. Seems like we deal with more than our fair share as of late is all I’m saying.

I had similar thoughts. The only thing that kinda makes sense is that UT was not the kids first choice and he was coerced into signing? His heart wasn't in being at UT and it's led to this mess?

Regardless, I see no way the kid remains at UT. Too far down this road for it to be salvageable. At this point, the adults need to work together to get the kid where he truly wants to be. No reason to try and force a round peg into a square hole. Both sides need to move on.
Gonna have to let it play out TO INSURE that him not playing this season and us not PAYING him is totally self inflicted. He will have to miss enrollment and participation deadlines. Our preparations can proceed till then with him not available just like it was an injury. We just need to avoid emotional low road reactions and it appears DW and CJH got this.

Arik Gilbert. Soresby. Jaden Rashada. Makhi Hughes. Those are high profile guys right off the top of my head before coffee. And all of those at national programs.

Get your head out of your ass. Every team is dealing with 18-20 year old millionaires that fail, whether by scandal or checking out when they get the money. People talk about Nico and Chaz Coleman nationally because of their supposed potential. Nobody gives a rip about guys like Boo Carter because Boo Carters are everywhere. And quite literally the only people who think this is a reflection on Tennessee and not on the NIL mess as a whole are low-IQ Vol fans.

Do you not think it's possible that CJH purposefully picks that one guy each year...then logs into VN and pops popcorn.

I don’t believe Soresby is electing to miss any football. I think him not coming to practice is someone else’s decision..

Meanwhile, Nico and Boo elected to miss practices. It seems Chaz isn’t exactly chomping at the bit to get involved with the team either.

I don’t think the poster was comparing people who got into disciplinary trouble with those who just quit out of the blue - Which is what we seem to deal with every season.

Still, a good list of problem children at other schools..

The end result is the same. The accusation seems to be we don't background check these people. Nobody does. The players have all of the power here.

Cut ties with this distraction! Another reason why the NIL is the wart move ever for college football! Chaz is very overrated and doesn’t deserve to be a Vol! Major distraction and the risk isn’t worth the reward. Good luck in the real world young man…first and foremost you need to grow up and be a man!
He may be distracting some fans, but I see no evidence he is distracting staff or squad as we let his clock to claiming earnings dwindles. Make a big deal out of the situation and cut him off and he would have a shot at legal recourse. If he never shows up he loses the PR battle and the money while we are going next man up. We can always reallocate the money if we get to keep it.

If he hasn't shown up to campus at all, really, he's not distracting anybody. The media people jump on it because it's the start of June. What else is there to go over with this team?

I also wonder if there is much time or opportunity to vette players in the portal, especially the ones that are in high demand. I would think it would take at least a few days to do the proper research and in the mean time OSU could be parking a brinks truck in their front yard.

In this situation, however, we have 3 coaches that worked with Coleman at Penn State so the staff certainly should have already known if there were any red flags. This whole situation is weird and what is frustrating is that this is the 3rd off season in a row where a high profile player has been involved in shenanigans that are detrimental to the team.

So I guess Chaz will likely not play for the Vols this year, go home and spend the money he already got, then sign someplace else and repeat the process. Get a nice check for doing nothing for a year while generating interest on the interwebz.

That "outrage prompting," AI-generated title is misleading. The discussion that follows is actually even-handed, thoughtful, and brings in a lot of relevant information--some of which was new to me. It's one of the more enlightening discussions I've seen on that show. Worth watching.

Our coaching staff and AD may make some mistakes ultimately, but only because they're having to make decisions when there are no rules, no guidelines, and what any court might decide is currently unpredictable. But I'm reassured that the UT football program is being guided by smart, very deliberate people.

We frequently hear commentators point out during a game that "They can't win the game on this posession... but they could sure enough lose it."

Right now, the UTAD is developing a pool of loyal donors. We forget that this NIL stuff is also new to those moneyed Vols fans. They probably didn't accumulate their money making investments without knowledge and reassurances.

The last thing you'd want new donors to see is $2 million of their donated dollars playing for another school! And legally, there's no assurance--despite the myth of common sense--that this couldn't happen on the whim of some judge, or some smartly wielded, tangentially related, legal precedent from some other century!

We fans need to recognize and accept that--for now, especially in the off season--the old familiar gridiron is a legal mine field.

The Steelers have allowed themselves to get jerked around by Aaron Rodgers for two years so it's not just college teams

I kind of feel like every program is dealing with something similar honestly. The current state of the NIL is killing college sports as a whole.

Everyone keeps saying "other programs are dealing with this," yet no one has supplied an example of another program having their starting QB leave because of NIL disputes at the end of Spring Camp (Nico), their starting safety/punt returner go MIA in late summer before fall camp (Boo), and their number one 2 million dollar transfer portal target not show up to Spring Practice or Summer workouts (Chaz). I understand that every program has internal NIL disputes, but which other program has had major starters abandon their team as we have? These guys haven't been poached by other NIL spending programs; they have had straight-up bad character actions and abandoned the team outside the transfer portal window despite receiving large NIL payments and guaranteed playing time. It makes no sense

UNLV’s QB in 24’ left the team mid season because of NIL.

To your point, Tennessee has had its share of bad looks with Boo, Nico and now Chaz.

It’s definitely not ideal and could point to a larger issue. But let’s be honest: on a team of 100+ players, what’s the buy in percentage from everyone on the roster?

Obviously an impossible number to come up with. But I say that to say the guys like Ethan Davis, who despite injuries/lack of playing time loves being a Tennessee Volunteer. There’s more Ethan Davis’ out there but we also live in a society that points out the negatives.

I see where you’re coming from and it’s fair to question Heupel’s decision making since the roster is ultimately his call. But I do feel like he gets Chaz off the team to set a precedent that this isn’t how we operate.

Otherwise, belief will start to dwindle amongst the guys in the locker room and if you have a divided locker room, you’re not winning anything at this level.

Hope we get this thing sorted out and can move forward. The season can’t start 🔜 enough. GBO
