The Gardening Thread

Got 6 maters in the ground. Time to top of the taters with more soil. Radish, caroot and onion looking good. Got a decent mess of green strawberries for the palnt sizes. THey haven't really exploded but it's still cool April.

Really need to get some okra, peppers and more maters in ground that are ready to leave the greenhouse. Maybe after this weks cool snap is gone it will quit fluctuating so much. Almost time to seed beans, squash, cukes, and melons.
on the potatos I have seen mixed recommendations on when to cover them. I am in GA around atlanta and the recommendation i am currently following is to let them grow 2-3 inches, then cover so only the top is visible. do that continuously until late June or later until mound is 6" tall above flat ground.

other recommendations were to wait for it to grow for a long while and do fewer, bigger coverings. or just continual/weekly coverings as long as they push out more green above the dirt all season.

I have only tried growing a couple times. My plan was covering up to but not over the tops. I have them in a 4'x2' x 12" deep bottomless planter. I probably got some leeway on covering, but was gonna cover this time, then once more when they get above top of container and fill up to container edge. And hopefully be more patient than last time on digging around them and pulling up to harvest what should have been more potatoes had i left them. But, those were in 12x12x12 grow bags so prob not well thought out.

Looks like I'm going to have to start my tomatoes over as a lot of my seedlings appear to be dying. This is my second year doing a garden without my mom and everything did great last year not sure what thier problem is this spring.

They germinated great got up to an inch and half, two inches and the leaves curled.

Yeah, I don't think moles do that. We have some chipmunks too. But they didn't get my sunflowers. But my garden is out beyond where they roam. Now, I will find mole tunnels crested up all in my garden all summer.
Please, no…

Seems odd. I had that problem last year but it was my fault. I left the door to the greenhouse shut one warm sunny day and burnt them. I have managed the door position very well this year and my seedlings have done wonderful.

We aren't too far apart. Where did you have your seed trays??

If you are re-starting tomatoes now, they won't be large enough or hardened off till mid june. You may want to visit a local greenery. If you want to ride up to Jackson County, I got 4 extra Cherokee Purple & Better Boy and 4 extra Jalapeno. But, the quasi-client i'm eating lunch with tomorrow, if headed back to ATL, may be passing by you....

I too should top off my taters with a bit more dirt.

Here in S LA, am about to rip out my struggling kale, and put in collards and Swiss chard. But I do have Malabar spinach going. That does well in the summer heat, as long as it gets some water.

I found coyote spoor in my yard. Maybe they’re chasing off the deer before they munch my new plants.

I think I’m almost done.

Tomatoes
Sweet peppers
Hot peppers
Strawberries
Potatoes
Carrot
Radish
Onion
Green onion
Squash
Green beans
Cukes

Still need melons and basil. Why is it so hard to find 4 or 6 pack basil. I had some last year and can’t remember where I got it. Everywhere I been so far is all $5 single cups.

Circled back and "mounded" up my melons. Watermeon and Cantelope. Complete no-till this year. Only broke soil up and mixed in Coast of Maine where I planted. Back in late Feb or early March I tarped up all the leaves I could get from my fall mower blowing to my winter leaf collecting spot to sit and wait and hauled them to the garden, not enough to mulch whole garden but it covers where I plant maters and peppers about 2 inches deep. Can't turn a shovel of dirt anywhere the leaves have been percolating in the garden without flipping worms up left and right. Wonderful sight. Will start today hauling straw bales home at lunch here and there and covering the rest of it. Muching whole thing temperates the soil, eliminates about 80% of my weeds, and gets me off high water bills. I noly spot watered last year and did whole garden with sprinkler maybe only twice. Mulch and mother nature covered the rest. So, I'm done putting in and down to just spreading straw. Had to pinch some blooms off some maters. Too young still to take away from plant growth. Now it's just a waiting game to see if I did any good and what's successfull. Hopefully weather man gave us good news for hte next day or two. We are in serious need of some storms. Been an extremely dry spring that we seldom get. Must be a strong El Nino year for the south as has been predicted I think. But, the plains and west coast need that water too and El Nino's are about only time they get recovery.

I've got it scoped out enough this year of what we plant and how I arrange everything, I'm pretty certain on letting my last trellis be the end of the garden and hte 20 feet or so beyond that that has this years 6 rows of bush beans will come inside that last trellis and still have plenty room. Also added 2 rows of green peas enough to plant one pack. Son likes green peas.

The War is on now. Been down last two nights with the big or something. Ain’t been out to garden. Checking out my blackberries and two healthy 18” canes just laying on ground by bush. Had to happen today. Leaves were only wilted. They weren’t broken. Looked like a beaver got to them. Perplexed I turned to walk to the house and saw that dang chipmunk. He is a hunted varmint from today forward. Knew I had a couple. Dog can’t catch them. Didn’t know they gnaw of berry canes like that. Only reasonable explanation

More lawn instead of garden, but does anybody have a robotic mower? I’ll probably buy one and thinking about the Mammotion brand. Maybe a LUBA3 (3000H). Save a little with a LUBA2 but it has to be set up with the RTK post thingy.

That ain't far from the truth. Been at war with moles for a while. The new stray dog we took in is quite good at moles. Has captured and punished 4-5 so far. She has not been so good with that chipmunk. I've watched it give her the slip a few times now. But, I know where the hole is, and I'm gonna hit it with that mole gas stick.

My yard has more than one colony of chipmunks. They dig up and eat my sunflower seeds and nibble away the sprouts. They dig up my planters of haricot verts and cypress vine. The red shouldered hawks used to hunt them effectively (especially the male), but the redtails that chased them off aren’t so keen to hunt chipmunks.

Whelp, my one cherry bus…the Romeo that never bloomed…is officially dead. Bought a second Juliet that will be here Tuesday. Starting over, but my first Juliet is doing wonderfully.

Organza bagged my peaches a week ago. Checked the today and there are some white-ish spots on them. My guess is a mold?

I've done the cole crops so far. Romaine lettuce, radishes, onions, carrots, cabbage, broccoli, and kenebec potatoes.

The rest will go in this week. Squash, Corn, okra, tomatoes, peppers, watermelon, cukes, cantaloupe.

If you have never tried an Ambrosia cantaloupe, then do yourself a favor and raise some. Nothing compares to their soft, sweet flesh. Every other cantaloupe is just a cantaloupe flavored melon next to them. They are a hybrid though, so you cant save the seeds. I order my seeds from Parks.

After 3 years of black plastic gardening for at least half my crops I have learned:

Tomatoes, peppers, and okra do very well with this method.
True vine crops like watermelon, cantaloupe, and cucumbers absolutely excel on the plastic. No weeds!
Squash, beans, and corn really struggle in this method. They can't really take the heat rolling off of it I guess.

Black plastic planting method:

1) till area to be covered, then cover with black plastic. Weight down edges with cinder blocks.
2) Cut 4 - 6 inch holes in the plastic at desired spacing. 2 - 3 feet apart for peppers okra, and tomatoes. 4 - 5 feet apart for vine crops.
3) Plant the live plants, scratch holes out for seed plantings and plant your seeds, then water.
4) IMPORTANT; place additional weights around plants and seed holes to prevent plastic from puffing up in the wind and covering and scorching your seedlings. T-Posts work great for this.

If you bite the bullet and get 6 mil plastic then you can use it multiple years. This will be the 3rd year I have used the same plastic, and your holes are already cut for you. You'll also find that you have to water very little with this method other than the initial watering. The plastic holds moisture in the ground. The top 1 inch of soil underneath may be dry, but everything underneath will be moist, and when it rains the water funnels down your planting holes so a brief shower can give you a good watering.

Actually found one dead chipmunk on my sidewalk Saturday. Not sure if the dog finally figured out that shake move or if the cat got it. Now to watch and see if there are others and how many. This chipmunk never got my sunflower seeds. Got a great stand germinated by the greenhosue and hte greenhouse took up one end of my tilled garden areas when I put it up xmas of '24 winter.
