2026 Vols Transfer Portal Thread

I never did. I simply stated it "ended up being the right move". You as well as john are assigning that to be about his injury, not me.

It was the right move because 1. Nate was our white whale & had a great season 2. we made the EE with the roster that was created instead
I'll contend on both points.

Did landing Nate prevent us from landing Rice? I don't know. It felt like we were pursuing both. Rice just seemed to get a better offer than we were comfortable giving.

And yes, we made the E8, but is that the goal? Would Rice have pushed us to the F4? Again, I don't know.

Both points worth considering, though.

I don't think anybody was beating Michigan, FWIW. Rice might've pushed us in to a different bracket though, as we might've had a better record

Question...after how things fell this year with us making another EE how exactly do you mean they misjudged the market?

Not overpaying for Rice ended up being the right move...McKneely ended up at Louisville where his stats all went down from the previous season at Virginia and his former team won 30 games without him...so another bullet dodged I think as he was demanding a high price for little return.
I would argue this was Barnes greatest coaching year at UT. We took guys late (Burg, Massamba, and Abram) that didn't contribute. Boswell, Evans, and Brown gave you enough to get through it though. Can we now field 7-8 guys in the market? We're about to find out.

And that's my point. How many of our losses are wins with a healthy Rodney Rice? Are we a 2 or 3 seed in a different bracket instead of a 6 seed in Michigan's? It's all speculative, obviously, but we have no idea what the season outcome is if we add Rice to that team.

Seen trilly is saying evans gonna be gone today also... I mean I get upgrading but we couldn't pay one damn player? Seems odd too me unless we are gonna spend 20 million on roster then okay ... but damn not one player

I trust this staff obviously, but I do wonder if it’s really that financially sound to turn over the entire roster. I mean, asking for 8-10 new portal additions seems like a huge risk. I guess we’ll find out soon enough, but that is a lot of new faces to bring in and it’s not like we won’t have to get into bidding wars for those players as well.

If you had told me Ethan Burg may be the last man standing before portal season began, I would have laughed. I thought he was for sure going to transfer out….yet here we are.

Hard to not think the staff misjudged how crazy the NIL market would become when they were placing dollar values on their returning players? Maybe they will rethink the evaluations when they start trying to buy a new roster and a few of our guys might return from the portal? This is going against everything Barnes has ever said in interviews about team culture and player led teams being more successful.

Very weird off season but Barnes/staff won't overpay for someone. This will be Barnes first year with full on mercenaries and essentially no hold overs. Him and the staff deserve our trust and patience, but it's hard to have deep routed culture with 1-2 returning players.

I mean if money is gonna be an issue we are in trouble... gonna have too pay if we wanna win ***** aggravating man

That’s fair, I understand you weren’t tying it to his injury, and we both agree the outcome worked out for us. Ament had a great season and making the EE was a success.

I just think saying it “ended up being the right move” is still outcome-based reasoning. It worked out, but that doesn’t necessarily validate that specific decision at the time (even if we all agree with the decision). With Rice’s injury, there’s really no way to evaluate whether passing on him was the right call in the first place.

Yeah agreed there.

But looking at USC and how the season went...I'm curious if something else was going on there. Only 2 players managed to play in every game...and only 5 managed to appear in 30 of their 32 games.

They brought in 11 transfers & only Ausar and Cofie played in every game....quite a few missed 5 or more games even, almost like Musselman had no control over that team at all.

Agreed. I’d be interested to see our hit rate on portal guys. Obviously we’ve landed some difference makers that people rightfully point to in knecht, Lanier, Gillespie. Building an entire roster out of portal guys though feels like a tall task, considering the misses we’ve had behind those guys.

Over 30% of their minutes came from returning players, which is in the top 3rd of college basketball. Seems there’s still some value in that - they didn’t get an entirely new roster
You used an R2 of .14 to make that point. Over the entire league, continuity showed no correlation with rank. You can pick and choose examples all you want. For all you know, your cherry picked examples are outliers or you are conflating continuity with another variable like NIL value versus accepted pay.
