UT hires Indiana’s Derek Owings as its new S&C coach

From what I've heard, the previous guy didn't have much of a personality/wasn't a motivator. This is a very good hire IMO.

In the first half last night, the announcers commented on Indiana’s undersized defensive linemen standing their ground because they beat Miami to the spots and were better coordinated. That’s game planning - Not strength and conditioning.
It’s both usually. You don’t win in the trenches without a good strength program regardless of how well you plan.

You think the S&C program has nothing to do with being able to physically stand up to bigger linemen?
...interesting...

This is absolutely a home run hire. Look at the past two years. Their team with a bunch of underrated talent competed with multiple teams with top 5 talent. It isn’t just coaching, it is also them being ready physically to play.

I’ve had so many thoughtful comments to this post, then there’s you.. Not a lot going on upstairs?
I believe you’re the one that made the brilliant comment that their conditioning had nothing to do with the strength and conditioning coach😂😂😂

Are they coordinated good on offense and defense yeah, but if you think that the strength and conditioning coach, the one that spends the most time with them isn’t extremely important you’re clueless

Why would we hire a strength and conditioning coach who relies on graduate transfers? Asking because: Is it a great hire or are we making a mistake of hiring anyone associated with Cignetti?

I don’t keep up with Indiana that closely. What is the secret behind their success and which coaches just happened to be there?
I think this narrative is way overblown on the age of Indiana's roster.

Their athletes push harder all game and don’t get out-physicalled. Dominated the season and playoffs. Don’t see WHY we would want that?
I bet their practice habits have something to do with that too. Hopefully the next thing Heup can improve here

Dude has skinny arms, do not want.

Seriously, it appears that Heupel saw what we all saw during the season. Our team was soft with a putrid defense. Heupel responds by hiring a top DC along position coach upgrades, overhauling the defensive personnel, and hiring a top S&C coach. I can't understand why folks continue to complain.

I like the hire a lot. But as I have said over and over, it still all starts with Huepel. HE sets the tone for what this team will be. This guy will simply develop whatever physical/mental attributes Huepel wants in his players. Unless Huepel has really looked in the mirror and had a change in attitude, it wont matter.
That’s a huge stretch. Actually flat out wrong.

The difference between Tennessee 5-7 in 2008 and 13-0 1998 is David Cutcliff and overall talent. But there was still NFL talent on the 2008 team.

Nick Sabans defense were never as good as they were with Smart or Pruitt.

The right staff hire is absolutely everything.
Banks sucked. Knowles doesn’t.

We hired the absolute BEST S&C coach. Stop minimizing that because you hate Heupel. Give it a damn rest…

I base my concern on Indiana’s defensive linemen being much smaller than Miami’s offensive line, while being able to hold their ground. That’s game planning and play calling. Our team runs out of gas because they can’t get stops, not because they needed to spend more time on the treadmill.
what is your understanding of "strength and conditioning"? this post, along with your other post, makes me question you - it seems you are arguing that strength and conditioning does not help teams get stops, does not affect our team running out of gas, and did not affect Indiana holding their ground last night against a bigger Miami team, so please elaborate.. because your examples are almost directing contradicting your point about "game planning and play calling, not strength in conditioning". or is this a troll post?

Are you implying graduate transfers are not allowed to participate in strength and conditioning excercises?

So you don’t think “holding their ground” has anything to do with strength & conditioning? Got it.

Bill Murray once had a great quote about like you.
We are talking about 23 year old transfers who got big pay days because they were in great shape before they arrived at Indiana.

Are you going to hire the Dodgers hitting coach because they pay the most money for the best proven players?

There’s a quote for people like you, too: "You can't cheat an honest man; never give a sucker an even break, or smarten up a chump."

They’re a team full of grad transfers. Mark Cuban isn’t paying top dollar for former 3 stars who need strength and conditioning.

"I know the players really like what we're doing down there," Cignetti said in February of 2024. "He changes their bodies. He'll cut a lot of body fat, still add lean muscle mass, quicker, stronger, faster, more explosive. I've seen the results. You look at the GPS numbers sort of here last year, relative to maybe where we were the year before. He'll make 'em faster."

Cignetti called Owings a "winning edge," long before the Hoosiers proved it on the field.

Conditioning - getting to the spot: strength - keeping the spot once you get there. That's called STRENGTH and CONDITIONING.
