"Hiring Jim Knowles was our top priority from the start of this process," Heupel said. "Jim has a proven track record of developing elite defenses that play with an edge, and we got to see that first-hand during the 2024 College Football Playoff. His defenses are always physical, well prepared and can adapt quickly in-game against today's complex offenses. He's a competitor, a winner and someone who will get the most out of our players in practice and on gameday. We are thrilled to welcome Jim to Rocky Top as he helps us chase championships."
Jim Knowles Named Tennessee Football Defensive Coordinator - University of Tennessee Athletics
This should attract upper-tier players on the defense.

So do we start putting in his stuff now and take advantage of bowl practices and not worry about stinking up the bowl game or does Inge still run Banks stuff.

I know nothing but I would think he would be involved with bowl practice. Maybe just watching, coaching. Maybe not game planning. Again... I know nothing.

This may be a dumb question…..but can he provide advice or recommendations to the staff for the bowl game? Not sure if there is some kind of provision that would prevent him from coaching this season until after the bowl

Love the hire, I hope his system can be installed this off season and the players can understand it and execute it. I’m excited to have a top notch defense again!!! It’s been entirely to long!!

yes!

In honor of his hiring let me be the first poster to officially call for his firing.

Fahr Knowles! He sucks.
When Ron Zook wanted to be Steve Spurrier’s DC didn’t Spurrier tell him that he was a friend and if he became his DC he would just have to fire him? Thinking Spurrier was tough
on his DCs!

Given that Ole Miss and LSU appear to be trading coaches back and forth like middle school lunch kids, I suspect there's no problem with Knowles stepping right in as soon as he gets a chance.

I'd doubt there's major changes but he runs something similar to Banks and probably has a good idea what Illinois runs, so he might add a wrinkle or two specifically for the game.

One thing I've noticed, and maybe I just haven't done enough research, is that the better DC guys coach in-game from the sidelines. I know Knowles does, but Banks did not.

Anyone think that makes a difference?

It's the only way to satiate this fan base.
Hiring coaches, dividing ourselves over if we support that hire or not before they've called a single play, then debating if that coach sucks or not, and then firing them anyway is Vol Nation's "Bread 'n Circuses"
