Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

Is that overall or just Ohio State?
Before OSU, he was at Oklahoma St (the other OSU).

From VQ:

In 2020, Oklahoma State led the nation and set a school record in third down conversion percentage defense (26.5) while also ranking first nationally in fumble return yards (190), tied for first in defensive touchdowns (4), eighth in fumble recoveries (10), ninth in tackles for loss per game (8.1) and 16th in sacks per game (3.0).

In 2021, Oklahoma State led the Big 12 and ranked in the top five in the FBS in sacks (1st), tackles for loss (2nd), third down defense (2nd), total defense (5th) and rushing defense (5th).

If he's back, that's great but I haven't seen very many posts with info like he used to bring
As I said a few days ago...I can't recall if @dascoop has brought any info about coaching staff moves; but, whenever it comes to recruiting, he hasn't missed.

One problem that led to PSU having some issues on defense this year is that Knowles' defense required d-linemen and linebackers to play in a much different way than they had under Franklin's previous d-coordinator. Hopefully it isn't as much of a change for our guys and some of those growing pains are minimized.

Let's face it...better fundamentals will improve this defense a ton. I think Banks was also not great at calling the defense during games and it's obvious that Knowles is a huge improvement there. It's going to be highly unlikely that the defense doesn't make a notable improvement considering how bad it was this season.
If he teaches/coaches our DBs to WRAP UP on their tackles, instead of the shoulder bump crap🤬
He’s miles ahead of Banks.

“A mastermind at DC. He helped me a lot as far as when I was at Oklahoma State,” former Cowboy and Knoxville native Thomas Harper said. “I feel like he was definitely what changed the defense around for sure.”

Knowles was in State College for one year. Prior to that he was at Ohio State and helped the Buckeyes win a National Championship. Before that, Knowles spent four seasons at Oklahoma State, where his defenses improved each year in total defense, scoring defense, passing yards per game, yards per play, yards per pass, rushing yards per game and yards per rush.

Both Thomas and Devin Harper played at Karns high school in Knoxville before going to Oklahoma State and learning from Knowles. Devin was the first to play for him being the older of the two brothers.

“I mean, out of him, you are going to get a blitzing defense, for sure,” Devin Harper who played in Stillwater said. “Defense that is going to run zero, run man, come after you, and with him you are going to get a lot of discipline because that’s what he’s big on—very big on your role, doing your job and putting pressure on quarterbacks, especially quarterbacks who can’t deal with pressure. That’s what he does. And you can expect a variety of blitzes from him, obviously. And going after the quarterback is his objective at the end of the day. And that’s what he’s good at.

“He’s like a little mastermind, literally. It’s really crazy. He’s like a little mastermind.”

In 2021, Oklahoma State led the Big 12 and ranked in the top five in the FBS in sacks (1st), tackles for loss (2nd), third down defense (2nd), total defense (5th) and rushing defense (5th).

A year earlier in 2020, Oklahoma State led the nation and set a school record in third down conversion percentage defense (26.5) while also ranking first nationally in fumble return yards (190), tied for first in defensive touchdowns (4), eighth in fumble recoveries (10), ninth in tackles for loss per game (8.1) and 16th in sacks per game (3.0). He gets the most out of his players.

“I would say he definitely makes you want to run through a wall for him, aside from that, I would say adjustments,” current Detroit Lion Thomas Harper said of what Tennessee is getting. “I just remember the second halves of our games at Oklahoma State, they might score like ten or fifteen in the first half, and we would all be confident that was it for the game because of the adjustments he made.”
The older Harper played from 2016 through 2021 for OSU. He learned a lot from Knowles.

“He kind of taught me defense, like how defenses work, how it’s meant to go to a certain area of the field, meant to go to a certain person,” Devin Harper said. “Like, when I was first in the league, I mean, it was kind of just play football. But when he came, he was big on, we’re gonna put, we’re gonna make the ball go here, so we know where it’s going. So then all we have to do is make the play and put our athletes and our people that can make plays in a position to make plays. Which is why I liked him a lot because he made sure his athletes made plays.”

Devin told Volquest that he spoke to Knowles just a few weeks back about his next landing spot and was excited to find out on Wednesday that it would be in his hometown.

“Well, he’s old school, but he’s new school,” Devin said. “He’s modern, if that makes sense. That’s why he was such a big difference at Oklahoma State. People love playing for Jim Knowles, and I wouldn’t say people love playing for good at the end of the day. That’s kind of how it was, like our defense was playing for Jim Knowles and the defense. And he was old school in a way, as in like, he’s going to MF you. He’s going to tell you when you’re wrong, but he’s also going to love you when you’re right. He is going to get on you, and that is what I liked about him. Some people nowadays don’t like that, but me personally, and the people at Oklahoma State, we liked that. He just holds you accountable, and that is all you can ask for out of a coach because you are both playing for the future. We are playing for the NFL, and he is coaching for his job.”

Knowles is expected to be a walk around defensive coordinator at Tennessee.

VQ is full of **** because they pushed Walters, then took the stance that it was the Internet people who were pushing Walters, published 3 hot bords, and then got out scooped by the likes of Meintz, Low, and Nakos.

9.95 please
It's been said here MANY times, since Heup took over...I still respect and like Price (although, it's starting to wear thin...this search being a prime example why); but, since JH took over, Price has not been as tuned in as before, no matter how close he and Heupel are. The national guys have been way ahead of him, sometimes days, especially with recruiting.
