Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

I absolutely love Danny White fundraising and expanding the budget like he has. The only issue with that is expectations follow. Can’t have the highest football ticket prices for a 8-4 (4-4) product
This is what give me hope…..expanding the stadium, adding the (equivalent to the Braves “battery”) @ G 10, means you need BIG $. In order to have beg money, you MUST win and win big. I trust the administration. Boyd owns a team. He understands. Good times are coming.

Stay strong Grasshoppers !!

I like him too but their DC has only coached LB's and DL so who do you let go for him. I could see Heupel hiring a CEO DC or one that has experiencing coaching secondary. Also would he leave?
You figure it out. Plus, who else would he want to bring? Cost of greatness is making hard choices.

Hate it for Banks. Ultimately he's responsible for it all. When you go 4/5 years, with what we have access too. And field one of worst in SEC. It kinda writes itself. Kudos to Josh for making the right decision.

Will be bumpy here for a bit, may lose some guys. But was the right call.

Recruiting has to get better. Talent eval has to get better. Honestly, i'm not impressed at all with Martinez' ability to recruit and make guys better. He and Banks have been pedestrian, outside of lucking into two porthole guys.
I think Banks did an average job, but I think its scheme that's the biggest problem. Especially when you watch your Vanderbilts and Indiana's with less talent play smarter and faster.

Heup also slowed down the tempo to help our defense the last couple years and that didn't seem to help either.

I’m laying Indiana’s DC whatever he wants. Literally whatever he wants.
They are certainly extremely well coached. They just play sound, disciplined football which is what we lack the most in my opinion. Everyone gets caught up in scheme but football isn't that complicated in reality. The trick is teaching everyone what they are responsible for and holding them accountable when they fail. That starts with consistency in practice, every freaking day. Jimmie's and Joes obviously help but there are also things you can to mitigate some of those issues. Indiana was not vastly more talented than us on that side of the ball but they absolutely knew their responsibilities and what they were doing. I also bet they go live in practice more than we do. Everybody kept blaming the loss of our corners for our demise but the fact is we had a first round draft pick on one side and a future NFL player on the other. It certainly would have helped to have them but our most glaring weakness was right down the middle of the defense. Great defenses are rarely that complicated but are extremely sound. I certainly hope we upgrade significantly as I hate watching bad defense in orange. Go Vols.

“The numbers show I am average. But look at my scheme. Does that look average?”

The stats, year over year, show that he’s average. Doesn’t that make him exactly that? I don’t know what your argument is. Everyone on here has stated his overall performance at Tennessee has been just average. You point to 2024 as justification to him not being average. Even then, he allowed the average PPG againt the top offenses he faced that year. Ohio State scored 42 pts per game in 2024. They scored 41 on us. UGA scored 31 points per game. They scored exactly that against us in Athens. So even in his best year. He was “average” when it was time for him to be great. Is that fair? Maybe, maybe not. But to be the pillar that carries you to a championship. I need something better than “average” when we play against the best. 2023 was the same story. Look up the PPG of the top offenses we faced. And you will see our Defense gives up that number almost to a T in a head to head matchup. It’s a consistent pattern against the top offenses he faces. No more, no less than their average Points Scored.

You can eliminate 2024 and 2025, his best and worst years and you will still see he is just average. It’s VERY concerning that year 5 is his worst year. Even worse than 2021, when almost half of our roster left before the season, and you had to install a new scheme. Even with injuries, there has to be a culture and standard in place when you make $2.1 Million per year. That cannot happen in an established defensive culture. That much money is TOP 10 DC money, not average. And his track record is showing just that. Average results and an elite defense every five years or so. I don’t think the money invested is expecting just average
I never said Banks was a great coach, yeah he's average. I'll tell you what I will take average over what we have seen in the recent past. Banks does not deserve to be fired for one subpar season. Just like giving your employee a chance to turn it around was the prudent thing to do, the same should go for Banks.
