the wall wasn't supposed to open on November 9th.

an East German official was making the announcement that there would be new travel rules coming, making it easier to cross. he was asked when it would happen and accidentally said "today".

the actual border guards hadn't been instructed one way or the other, but with thousands coming over, and the collapsing regime the guards didn't fight it.

Harald Jager was the officer in charge that night.

NATIONAL REPEAL DAY
12/5/33
IMG_3745.jpeg
Back in 1933, following the signature of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the United States ended its 13-year experiment with the increasingly unpopular nationwide prohibition of alcohol, meaning yay, it’s National Repeal Day on December 5! If you enjoy alcohol, then this is a great opportunity to celebrate your legal freedom to consume it. While popular opinion tends to suggest that prohibition failed, it did succeed in cutting overall alcohol consumption in half during the 1920s (although that also meant tax revenues from alcohol were zeroed out). Giving a dangerous, flapper-style edge to the consumption of alcohol in illegal speakeasies also may have contributed to a whole cult around alcohol consumption, further glamorizing it

December 8
In New York, at approximately 5:00 p.m. on 8 December 1980, Lennon autographed a copy of Double Fantasy for Mark David Chapman before leaving The Dakota with Ono for a recording session at the Record Plant.[1 After the session, Lennon and Ono returned to the Dakota in a limousine at around 10:50 p.m. (EST). They left the vehicle and walked through the archway of the building. Chapman then shot Lennon twice in the back and twice in the shoulder at close range. Lennon was rushed in a police cruiser to the emergency room of Roosevelt Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival at 11:15 p.m. (EST); he was 40 years old.
