Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

I wish ND would get drug in the court of public opinion, but they won’t because they’re ND. Media will defend them like they’ve staked out some moral high ground instead of excoriating them for the entitled crybabies they are.

They’re pretty much getting hated on from all angles on the twitter machine

first time I have heard about this crap...

The MOU "Newsy Wrinkle" for 2026

Bevacqua revealed a key provision in the memorandum of understanding (MOU) Notre Dame signed with CFP officials last spring, which takes effect for the 2026 postseason. Under this clause—designed to protect the independent Irish's access in the expanded format—Notre Dame is guaranteed a playoff berth if ranked in the top 12 on Selection Sunday. This overrides standard selection criteria, such as head-to-head results or conference affiliations, ensuring an 11th- or 12th-ranked Irish squad automatically qualifies as an at-large team.
  • Hypothetical Replay of 2025: If the exact scenario repeated next year—with Notre Dame at No. 11 and Miami at No. 10 after a Week 1 upset—the MOU would bump Miami out, securing Notre Dame's spot regardless of the head-to-head loss.
  • Expansion Safeguards: If the CFP grows to 14 teams (adding two more at-large bids), the guarantee extends to a top-13 ranking. The MOU applies only to 12- or 14-team fields and was a concession to Notre Dame's independence, as former AD Jack Swarbrick helped architect the format but advocated for Irish protections.
This revelation has reignited debates about equity in the CFP. Critics, including some SEC and Big Ten voices, argue it gives Notre Dame an unfair edge—easiest schedules, no conference championship grind, home playoff potential, and now a ranking-based backdoor—while keeping all revenue unshared. Supporters counter that independents deserve safeguards to compete with power-conference juggernauts. With ongoing talks of a 16-team expansion (potentially diluting the MOU), this could evolve further.

In the Notre Dame/CFP situation:
  • The MOU was signed last spring between Notre Dame and the College Football Playoff governance.
  • It spells out special playoff-access protections for Notre Dame as an independent, including the key clause that guarantees them a berth if they finish in the top 12 of the final rankings starting in 2026.
  • Even though it’s “just” an MOU, the CFP has publicly acknowledged it and treats it as a firm commitment, so in practice it functions like a binding rule for playoff selection.
Think of it as the written version of “we all agree this is how it’s going to work,” short of a full legal contract.

Just finished The Chair Company. Like all things Tim Robinson, some will absolutely love it, and some will completely detest it. Because it's so strange and crazy, how relevant it is may get lost.

Robinson, Zach Kanin, and Andrew DeYoung...those guys may be from another planet.

I worked on that show. We shot a lot of it in Brooklyn doubling as Ohio

The school doesn't want to play it. The players don't want to play it. They don't have some dumbass conference contractually forcing them to do it.

Seems to me the only people ND owes an explanation to is their own fans. I don't think anyone else is entitled to see their 4th strong long snapper out there trying to play TE against whoever.

You don't get extra practices, you just get extra practices at the end of this season and forfeit those practices this coming spring. If you don't go to the bowl you get those practices this spring instead.

Hope that makes sense
It does. Thank you!

We only get so many of these games a season. We only get so many chances as fans to watch and cheer for our teams. And you've got teams depriving their fans of that experience because they're butthurt they were left out of the playoff with 2 or 3 or 4 losses or whatever, and the playoff is now the only thing that matters. People said this would happen. People warned it would fundamentally change the game, and not for the better, but it was always full speed ahead.
Sorry to disagree but I feel no loss if I’m deprived of watching another display like the one I saw against Vandy.
Bowl games are like NFL pre season games except they are played after the season.

Given that we would get 15 more practices in the spring, I'd prefer UT opt out as well.

My immediate selfishness as a fan is worth less than the benefits the 15 practices in spring bring for my long-term fandom.

Hell with the portal & opt outs I can kind of get it. I would assume the bulk of the team would want to play a bowl game though. The vacation & opportunity for younger guys plus extra practice.

Imagine spending hours daily on this app just to be either 1. A very bad troll or 2. Incessantly negative and masochistic towards your own team/fanbase. Weird.

We’ve worn the music city out..gives us a nice vacation with a nice warm backdrop😭🤣🤣 I’m just saying we deserve better than the MCB that’s it. I mean he didn’t even wait to see if the outback bowl offered…or whatever they’re calling it these days🤣

Move the bowl games to April . Replace the spring games with them , like a pre season game.
Younger guys get to play plus extra practice and everyone has a full squad
