I don't get the angst against bowl games.

I enjoy just watching some teams I've never seen much of go at it. Watching Tulane and NTS play last night was quite enjoyable (I know it wasn't a bowl game). I didn't care who won but there might be a player there that will someday be in the NFL. Who around here had heard much of Patrick Mahomes before he started to play for KC? It would have been nice to have seen him plat CFB.

Thats because thats how you treat it

Correct, I agree.
I thought that was sort of the topic.
I'm for a 16 team playoff and no buys, not that it matters this year for us.

But yes in Football and Basketball, its all about making the dance. You always want to make the dance.

But I have went to an NIT game the vols played in many moons ago, lol. So there's that.

But a bowl game anymore simply feels like the NIT, for me.

We're not saying it. Players are saying it by opting out. Hell, we have an entire TEAM (Kansas State) saying it this year. If the players dont give a ****, why should we?
I bet a team of "don't give a ****" won't win enough games to even qualify for a bowl next year. An attitude like that is corrosive to winning. You will never win with a group that does not care.

I still love the bowl games besides the playoff format is a joke...you're not getting the best 12 teams playing for a NC, yeah Tulane is the best in their conference but they're not even close to being one of the best 12 teams in CFB, until they change that it's all bs🤣

One thing you can say. If they play in the bowl, they will be playing next year. You have to figure that most opt outs will be trying to go pro so they won't be here next year anyway. This will be a good chance to see this freshman heavy squad and get a preview of next year. What will we look like next fall after we lay a top 5 recruiting class on top of this base. I think we have some exciting times coming next year.

No one asked for a 4 team playoffs or a 12 team playoffs, and this auto bid/ wild card nonsense is a **** show. 16 teams was the only thing that ever made sense and it doesn’t seem too difficult to rank 16 deserving teams and have them play one another.

The chicken **** commissioners and scumbag networks representatives won’t give anyone what they want because giving people what they want removes their authority over the people. “You have to have us to fix this problem that we created!” As a bonus, controversy captivates an audience.

In hindsight, last year, I would have preferred a bowl game. I hated how Tennessee lost on the road in mid December and was completely out of the college football discussions for the next month.

Yes, you cannot win the championship without being in the playoffs, but quietly fading in the first round on a cold field in Ohio is hardly any more satisfying than playing in Florida on NYD.
New Years bowl games just weren't the same knowing UT's season was already over.

So the playoffs have removed the bowls from having a significant effect on the championship and many now say they don't want to watch. I find this curious since the VAST majority of bowl games never had any impact on the championship anyway. It's always been the big 5 that hosted the meaningful games (Sugar, Cotton, Rose, Fiesta, and Orange). Maybe, the bowls will go back to what they were originally for, a reward to a team that had a good year. You know, for fun. I'm sure most of the players would be down for that. I think the fans would like that.
I totally agree

OP, I think some of this, for us old fans anyway, goes back to 20 years ago with Fiulmer crying for a New Years day bowl only to get blown out in the Peach Bowl with the players laughing and “hanging out” on the sideline.

I’ll never forget that night against Clemson in Clausen’s final season. So many blown calls by that referee crew.

Two things stood out to me that night. One, seems Fulmer was trying to get Clausen into the league because he threw almost every single down and two, there was a fumble and he just stood there for, what seemed an eternity and, watched them jump on the ball. The kid didn’t even try to recover it.

Looking back, it’s wild the #6 team got a Peach Bowl invite. lol

It was criminal that we got left out of the BCS and fell that far. Nobody wanted to play in that game.

That dumb Auburn game man. Then Georgia snowballed right as we were going into half lol
Back then, one thing I noticed about Fulmer was that if he complained after the season about something, the team fed off of that and they would lay an egg. After Peyton’s senior year, he complained about him not winning the Heisman and we were blown out in the Orange Bowl. He complained about both Peach Bowls and we were hammered in both. However, after the SECCG loss to LSU in ‘01, the press hounded him relentlessly about the team not being up to play Michigan. He didn’t talk much about that game and we hammered them. Seems he was complaining about the Cotton Bowl and we were beat in that game one year but, I can’t remember what he was complaining about.

NIL killed the hype of bowl games.

Everyone's getting paid now so they can buy their own goody bag and then go play for a playoff team next year

There is no tradition anymore. No one cares about that or rivalries.

It's all about how much money you gonna pay me to play for your "school"

When fans argue that “bowl games are meaningless now” I laugh. For starters, they act like that is some opinion held by fans in general. Many of us still love bowl games. Second, as you mentioned, the vast majority of bowl games were always “meaningless” before the CFP. Blasting teams like Iowa and Northwestern was fun even though those had zero effect on the natty.

Some of those bowl matchups like the Capital One Bowl, Sun Bowl, Outback Bowl, etc. have been really entertaining. Plus it is nice to see some of the young guys who might play big roles next season. Fans who don’t like them anymore cause of some opt outs or whatever have the right to their opinions but tons of us still enjoy the bowl games.
