Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

2024 was a make or break year for Tim Banks. That’s exactly why he was working without a contract for 2025. 2024 was great, I’ll give you that. But the rest of his body of work is AVERAGE, not above average, and certainly not below. If we want to be an average defense , who’s DC is an average play caller with elite Defenses every 5 years so be it! I personally Do not want that and think there’s plenty of great defensive minds available TODAY.

If you wash 2024 and 2025 out. I’m okay with that. Those are his two worst years. But, 2021-2023 was just meh football with a lot of questionably called games. But Tim Banks doesn’t have much to hang his hat on if we wash his best and worst years out. You’d think it would be his first year of coaching that I would wash out, nope year five…

Tim is not in the same situation as going into the last-off-season. He’s going into this season coaching for his life, like he was in 2024. And he doesn’t have 15 defensive linemen to rotate out going into next year. So he won’t be able to deliver pressure with 4 like he did in 2024. Look at what happened when we couldn’t get to the QB with 4 last year. We got crushed…. Because we couldn’t scheme to get other people home without leaving the middle of the field wide open. A common trend in a Tim Banks scheme.

The question now becomes, “is he allowed or deserving of a 2nd chance, and arguably a 3rd chance to steer the ship in the right direction?” For $2.1 million, which is an elite level DC’s cost (and what we will be paying Tim Banks next year). I believe there’s much better than we’re paying Tim Banks for. And if the defense looks exactly the same this year, Tim might get his boss onto a hot seat.
2023 was good too. That defense won us a few games.

We just afford to waste another great offense, even though I think our issues are deeper than Banks.

We are horrible at complimentary football across the board and the team has generally lacked mental toughness in every season under Heup.

Tim Banks gave up 31+ points to 7 of 8 sec teams this year. That's abysmal in year five. His lack of recruiting participation makes him even more expendable. His style is not compatible with the offense either. A bend but don't break scheme unnecessarily leaves the defense on the field longer by design and you see it with third down failures throughout his tenure. Need someone that is more aggressive and is a game time chess player.
Yeah I'd much rather have a "force a 3 and out each time" type of DC. Long opponent drives have limit our ability to score more with the offense. Seems like and empty possession or 2 in the 2nd or 3rd qtrs always lets opponents get ahead or back in the game

According to a rumor in the Legend Bey thread, @Glitch is the reason for all the drama. Typical jinx.
I got a buddy who knows this manager at google and he said that Legend does want to come to Tennessee is because in the State of Tennessee it is illegal for minors to transition. His momma forced him to sign with Tennessee for the very same reason.
Bey wants to be the first three sport woman athlete at a D1 School to win MVP and NC in all three. (Claude/Claudia Loewsdeck did it three times at Iowa's NAIA Neckbump College of Arts and Diesel).
He also wants to be a three sport athlete in women's professional sports.
All of his plans could be derailed by playing for Tennessee and being forced go to the NFL.
Sad tale of oppression.

i am in full support of of whichever way josh goes. i see it both ways. however, I fully agree that recruiting hasnt been good enough. waay too many misses.

I don't know what the answer is. Just that, if it were me. And we go another porthole without signing what Id consider a championship caliber haul. i'm making changes.
Considering Banks is rare in recruiting and not an asset whatsoever, it highlights it against him even more.

Ole Miss letting all the skeletons out of the closet to make lane suffer for dumping them,
But actually shows their true colors.
They knew everything we are hearing and more but didn’t have a problem with it as long as he was their HC.
I know they have but they won't use them for precisely the reason you mentioned. Maybe if they have sexual harassment or something, wouldn't hurt football but that would still be a bad look.

@Stoerner Fumbles thoughts on Amari Jefferson?

Should we expect him to be a contributor here?
Remember when everyone was so high on this kid coming out of Baylor and it was between us and the gumps and Saban made a visit to the school and that was it... he goes there, is injured, comes here, and no one even talks about him ...

This one is simple to me

He’s been here 5 years - his defenses have cost us some big games (Georgia 2025, South Carolina 2022, etc) - it’s time to move on
That's the kicker for me. I don't give a rip how good your defense is against Austin Peay. Show me what you can do against quality teams. Banks has shown consistently that he can't make adjustments at half time against quality competition. It has cost us games we were leading at halftime against Bama and Georgia

On December 5, 1945, a U.S. Navy training mission known as Flight 19, consisting of five TBM Avenger torpedo bombers, vanished in an area latter dubbed The Bermuda Triangle. All 14 airmen were lost, and a subsequent rescue plane also disappeared with its 13-man crew, with no confirmed wreckage of the aircraft ever found.
