Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

Farooq is raw, but his play this year has not been bad. If he continues to develop over the offseason, he'll be fine at one safety. Need another stud safety to play alongside him. Agree we need a star. We also need a stud CB. Redmond should improve with the experience and be a starter on one side. Can't count on Gibson coming back 100%. Hope that he does, but you pick up another stud CB as insurance. We also need depth.
Safety is so depleted you almost have to sign two in the portal due not really having a day 1 HS signee ready to roll. Kaleb Beasley is not a SEC safety, and should not be in a SEC two deep next season. Farooq is a nice prospect but is a liability in man when you blitz, particularly the deep ball. He’s been just as bad as Turrentine in that regards, just not targeted near as much. Also whiffed a lot on tackles, look back at MS State game for reference. Sign two safeties via portal and make Farooq compete. They looooooove to rotate so much anyways so it gives them three starting safeties.

Can you imagine having a tool like Beamer for a coach who just led your team to a 4-8 season and learning he'll be back? That's about as bad as it gets.
Nah, doesn't matter what OC, DC ST Coach, GM, AD, President, whatever else you have when you are in South Carolina which is fairly poor. Hootie is too selfish to give a lot to NIL. He said, "I'll buy Sellers but we ain't getting any better linemen. God bless."

Which goes back to my point on Willie Martinez. People are praising him for the corners but who do you guys think recruit the safeties primarily? Who do you think are on the sidelines coaching up the safeties primarily during the games with Banks in the box?

People don’t like to hear it but Banks doesn’t really coach the safeties…when you’re a coordinator at this level your time is spent game planning. I am pretty sure Martinez coaches safeties…also a lot of the good cornerback coaching comes from Earnest Thomas.

I'm so glad this wasn't about Mama Pavia this time. I'm so sick of that story that I'm so obviously bringing up long after it cycled out. Whatever. "I'm not a whore. I just play one on TV." Yeah, baby. That's what Jodie Foster said. She was 12! I'd hate men too!
I was talking about taxidermy, you perv

You're putting the focus on coaching guys up during games and not during the entire week of practice leading up to the game? If you don't get it right during the week, then it doesn't matter which coach is talking to them on the sidelines during a game. Willie Martinez has coached first rounders and NFL guys at corner...along with getting Redmond to play at a freshman AA level. There shouldn't be any complaints about the job he's done.

Our safety play has been bad the entire time Tim Banks has been at UT and it has been his position group. We've had guys at safety not get drafted because of what they put on film at Tennessee and then become legit NFL players, so it isn't like Banks has been working with nothing. We can find some positives to point at with every position group on defense over the last few years except for safety. Banks is the weakest link on the staff.

Yep, during practice your DC isn’t focusing his time on one position group. They just think that because of the 5 minutes of practice film during fall camp/spring ball. And your million dollar DC isn’t going to head many recruiting battles for a prospect. Willie is the DB coach, most of our safeties have been identified and recruited by Willie. Go in most of our corner signee threads and we aren’t sure if they will be a corner or safety or star. We thought Redmond could potentially be a safety, same with his HS teammate. Same with Merritt, Beasley suppose to been a corner and one of Willie’s highest corner signees if not the highest. Now he’s a scrub safety that doesn’t like violence because he was initially a ball hawking corner.

I love that you think this. It's like a bit that if you ever give up, I might just leave this site and start reading more books.
Don't hate on RGW because he called it...while you were "getting the feeling" it was Kentucky media trolling their own fanbase, and Stoops would stay.

Truth is, Willie has led two different stint of DBs here at UT and has signed the same caliber of guys while also missing on all the 5 star studs. Willie has hit on two HS signees during his current tenure, Redmond and Gibson. The rest have given you absolutely nothing, except Jordan Matthews shutting us down yesterday. Now he has a good little niche going with identifying a portal stud each cycle and signing him, I’ll give him that. But if that’s what you want to rely on, and not those freak signees UGA/Bama/LSU/OhioSt roll out every year then hey, Willie is your guy.

I love how many strays 'Ol Willie catches, man. Guy is the most consistent DB coach in the league at developing guys no one else saw anything in into NFL draft picks. One year at UCF he put 3 guys in the league. All coached by him. I never have quite understood that, because I watched Cam Sutton's film and I was stoked we were getting him but he wasn't someone that we had to fight a lot of teams off to keep. That dude came in and looked good almost immediately. Does anyone remember that? Maybe Willie has a shrine to the DB God somewhere in his house where he takes all freshman Corners and anoints them. It would explain a lot, including Redmond.

Not only is Willie ruining the DB room now, he's screwing up the safety room too. Y'all don't realize that so many hands are involved in recruiting these guys now that a coach in Willie's position can't really screw anything up. And if something goes wrong it's almost always going to be about someone wanting just a hair more than we are willing to spend on that position. We have deep-pocketed boosters, but they also like money.

Hey, you are trying to suggest I think my game is better than his. I said the opposite. But go off. I still don't think you get it.

This is a form of Art.

Oh, I get it. Way more than you think. But, do tell us more about art, Klaus Biesenbach.

Willie would not be coaching in the SEC if he didn’t so happen end up with Huep at UCF. William Wright was your CB3 this year in year 5, and an undersized Temple transfer was your star. Willie left UGA and they have been on a defensive back spree ever since. Just so happen he’s found the perfect match with our university. Fingers crossed with hit on one of low three star signees that are set to enroll. If we hit on one we’re doing good, or par for the course.
