TENNESSEE

A Tennessee official visit is set for Nov. 28-30, which is when Vanderbilt comes to town. The Vols offered in the days following Franklin's firing, and the sides spoke and are getting to know one another. A visit to campus is important so Gooden, who is from Hamilton, Ont., but boards at Tabor, and his mom can learn more about the program, the school and the coaching staff.

Gooden wants to play edge rusher in college, which has kept some programs from pursuing him harder since others project him as an interior player.

IMO he's not an Edge here which will be a deal breaker. Could see him ending up at Vandy simply because they need talented players no matter the fit.
We need some bigger ends, hope will land him. Edge setters are important. Depends on his speed, he can always bulk up and move inside. Maybe can play both. GBO

You’re conflating Edge with SDE. They are not the same position and don’t require the same body type.

Edge needs taller, more agile dudes with bend to get around an OT and to the QB. Think Pearce and Ross and incoming Hezekiah Harris as ideal frames. Of course you want them strong enough to play the run, that goes without saying. But those aren’t mutually exclusive.

SDE needs thicker, heavier players than Edge who can also move. They’re in between an Edge (lighter) and IDL (heavier). Think Tyre West and Dom Bailey and going forward Weathersby and Dye. And incoming guys like Groves (who was thought of as an Edge before he got too big) and Golston.

Carter and Gooden have the frames of future SDEs, although I think Carter *could* be an Edge in the SEC much more than Gooden.

I am talking about SDE specifically when I am talking about edge setters. I should have made it more clear. We got edge guy depth, we need more SDE depth. We have good edge rushers and they are young overall. Like you said they will gain strength as well. I just hope we pick up Carter and Gooden as well. I think Carter may be able to possibly play edge and some SDE but that is to be determined. We need some interior depth too. GBO

Golston is only 235. He’s going to have to add a lot of weight to be a SDE. Of course, that’s not Edge length, either, so I assume they think he can add the weight.

Issue with Gooden is that apparently he wants to play Edge, not SDE

"Gooden, a UCLA commitment who's a top-100 prospect in 247Sports' rankings, picked up an offer from Tennessee more than a month ago and has been planning for weeks to take an official visit to Knoxville this weekend. Miami once planned to host him on an official visit but is no longer a contender for him. Gooden, who plays at Tabor Academy in Marion, Mass., is coming off an official visit to Vanderbilt this weekend, and his final decision now appears likely to come down to UCLA, Vanderbilt and Tennessee. Sources close to his recruitment believe it's still entirely possible that the 6-foot-4, 260-pound Gooden could stick with the Bruins, who are still waiting to hire a new coach after former coach DeShaun Foster's firing in September. He also appears to be a legitimate option for the Vols down the stretch, though, and this weekend's visit will determine whether they have a strong chance of stealing him away." -247

"It's a great option," he said. "It seems like it'll give me a great chance of success and bring me to where I want to go."

Gooden, who's originally from Canada, said the chance to play in the SEC "is a big draw," too.

"Great competition there that'll get your film out, and people will know who you are," he said, referring to the SEC. "It's great football."

He said he plans to announce his final decision on Wednesday, the first day of the Early Signing Period. Coming off his weekend stay at Tennessee, he's still not sure where he wants to go.

what kinda vanilla quote is this? Option? Not sure? Young man, Tennessee is THE place to be. Get on board quick lest you lose your spot.

Maybe it’s just cause he’s Canadian but I typically like to see a recruit glow about us in order to feel good about landing them.

Sure sounds like between Gooden, Finch, Carter and Thomas we are bound to get a couple of booms on the DL.

If we can hang on to everyone committed and add 2-3 of those guys that's an A+ job by the staff this cycle. Anything else (Amari Latimer, G'Nivre Carr, etc.) would just be a cherry on top.
