Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

Something schools need to consider when they are quick to fire coaches is that legitimate coaches with success at major programs will not make the jump to them. LSU has one last chance here. If Lane doesn’t work out, they will join what Florida has become. If Florida doesn’t hit it this time they will fall to Auburn.

Auburn needs to get lucky like we did. Honestly, Penn State is the most stable job out there currently. I would laugh if Sumrall went to Ole Miss.

This is why I think we need to give Heupel a chance to fix things before putting him on the hotseat

He’s clearly a good coach who’s won at a rate we haven’t experienced in decades - any heat he’s getting is because of the expectations he set for himself by doing so well

Let’s differentiate ourselves with program stability, stick with our guy, surround him with good coordinators and see where we go

Final thought then I’m off to church to pray away the sins that last night created…

A lot of us on here, myself included, see the need for and are pleading for a change at the DC spot if not the defensive staff as a whole. But let’s not let last night’s horrendous defensive performance overshadow the very important point that our offense only mustered a measly 24 points (14 of which came off turnovers, so take those away and it’s only 10 points) against a pretty mid to below average SEC defense. And that’s not an outlier this season against decent opponents. DC has to change, but we also need to reflect on our OC and his staff as well.

But like several have pointed out, Heupel doesn’t like firing assistants and finding solid coordinators isn’t a simple task. As much as I hate to say it, unless DW forces Heupel’s hand, I don’t think we see many big time changes this offseason. I hope I’m wrong, but history says I’m not.

very level headed thought process. let's go

I agree. He created the expectations, so he gets to fix them. Top coaches look at situations like this to determine stability and if the administration and boosters deal in realism. Fans never do which is why recruits and coaches should not make decisions based on social media.

Actually believe the defense will improve next season, DL should improve this off-season and Gibson should be back at CB. Redmond will only get better next season. Go find a stud safety in portal and pay the guy ...
It’s hard not to be worse. We have to start wanting more from this football program. We spend as a top program and fans pay ridiculous prices to watch a mid product. And our coaches are paid millions to win. It’s time we upgrade our staff and get what we are paying for.

I mean, I already told you but fine. Here's a colorful chart instead of scary numbers! Maybe this will crack into that thick skull of yours. Remember to wipe your drool.

Last years lack of urgency and aggressiveness in the portal looms large. Issue will be the same next year if they don’t make quick use of the portal this offseason. I count only 4 teams that will have less graduates and seniors than us next year based on this chart.

Butch let Jancek walk and hired the savior Bob Shoop. How did that work out for us?
And he didn’t let him pick his assistants. That would be like us bringing in Heupel and choosing Chaney and Pittman as assistants. Of course it didn’t work. Much like it is crazy to hire a new DC this year and not get rid of most of the defensive staff.

issues a plenty with who we lose on the line. basically going to have to sign an entire new defense, maybe same on the OL.

Could go sideways in a hurry if we miss on lot in the porthole. need to get on it

oh no, i'm not defending. he deserves to he replaced, my point is where do you go?

We've replaced in the past, and gotten Sal Sunseri.

My point? It just feels like. today. right now, in this crazy CFB world, things are different.

You saw 6 programs struggling to find good enough 'winners' to fill the vacancies. Now, I get it. Head coaching slots are different. But, making changes mid stream can sometimes be hemorrhagic to the entire team.

Ive never been in love with Banks' play calls, and dont think he is a good recruiter. His blitz packages seldom get home, often, against inferior opponents.

So, where do you go?
I honestly don’t know Jack. Maybe find someone who is younger and innovative? I think if you play our type of offense you need someone who is more aggressive and creative on defense. I knew you weren’t defending him. Things can spiral pretty quickly in modern college football. Just ask Franklin and Penn State. From top 5 to fired in less than a month.

Heupel and UT need to go the OU route. They had a bad year, cleaned up some staff on the offensive side, and spent big in the portal. They would not stand for being mediocre. And I don’t think Venebles is a good coach, but they have a loaded roster.

I’m just not sure Heupel is made of the same material and as cut throat. We should have upgraded our roster a lot more and our coaches were lazy in the portal. You always upgrade where you can even if that means recruiting over a decent player.

We need him to take a step and make major changes to his staff and roster. If he does, he can win big here and even next year. If he doesn’t, we’re looking at another 8-9 win season next year again.

Ball is in his court.

Well I'm not to say I know how to fix the issue or suggest who we should hire if Banks gets fired. All I do know is it better be the right hire because if it's not this same subject will raise its weary head again ...

Be selective and efficient in the next hire.

agreed.

Shoop would have been a great hire if Butch had gotten out of the way. Stop worrying about how loser coaches like Dooley and Butch made decisions. Heup needs to know what he is looking for and make a great hire.

LSU appears at the moment to be putting all their eggs in the Super Coach basket - doing exactly what every rabid fan wants

Firing their national title winning coach after a couple of mediocre seasons. Hiring Brian Kelly away from Notre Dame in his prime, then spending $50M to fire him so they could hire Kiffin away from Ole Miss in his prime. Bold, bold moves conjured up from the viral passions of the LSU Tiger message board community.

If they don’t get a national title out of all of this - what should the average college football fan conclude about Super Coaches?

Very unpopular thought, that I dont even like.

Do you keep Banks🤦🏼‍♂️, replace assistants, then go gonzo in the porthole?
