Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

I feel like our linebackers have been asked to do too much this season with safety play being so bad and us being surprisingly weak at DT. They've been in a no-win situation. I will say that Inge has done a great job recruiting and I think the linebacker room is in good shape. I would like to see him, Chop, and Garner stick around.

That’s where I am at…Teelander is slow and can’t play in space but it’s unfair to judge our LB’s by the position they were put in with having terrible safeties and STAR and defensive tackles who were consistently pushed around.

Clean house defensively. I don’t care if it costs us certain recruits. We’ve had ONE good defense in 5 years. One. And I don’t want to hear the popular talking point that we can’t attract a good defensive coordinator here because of the tempo offense we run. We don’t even run tempo that much anymore. We slow down frequently and our offense is a shell of what it was in 2021 and 2022 for tempo.

Joey has peaked. His arm isn’t strong and gives you decent but not spectacular QB play. As the season went along, he started to fizzle out. Grateful for what he did this year, but give that 2 mil to some other QB looking for a change of scenery.

I liked him and I’d like entering year 6 with a returning starter at QB versus breaking in a new one. I think we need one more bridge year to get ready for Faizon Brandon. I’m not sure GMac is the answer over Joey

Banks’ defensive style doesn’t complement our offense.

You watch the NFL and you realize that championships are won in the offseason. Look at the Patriots and Bears. They handled business with coaches and free agency.

Tennessee’s offseason was a crap show. McCoy injured, Iamaleava saga, Boo Saga, portal losses in secondary. We recovered ok with a few additions but our season looked like our offseason.

We need a clean, active, and calculated offseason. Then we can predict records.

If we have to start the 5th new quarterback in a row next season then it will be another rough year.

If JA can come back then we have a shot. Get some dudes. Get a new defensive coaching staff and go to work.

If it’s a new QB it’s going to be rough. But pair him with a new OC and DC and build for year two of starting the same QB.

I'm torn on JA. I think he performed well this season given when he arrived. I also think he has limitations that could hold us back even if we do manage to fix the defense. If he gets another year of eligibility and is in our price range of what we are willing to pay, then by all means, bring him back to compete for the starting job with no guarantees. If he demands a very hefty chunk of change and a guarantee to be the guy, though, I think you have to shake his hand, thank him for what he did, and wish him the best.

Heupel may be as sharp as any HC when it comes to football knowledge, especially on offense but none of the HC’s that’s won championships in the last 10 years are hiring or keeping OC’s or DC’s like his.
I'm not going to debate this, but I will simply point out that both the last two coordinators Josh Heupel hired made Broyles Award short-lists.

And he's made 3 hires, right? Decent. Did Golesh make a Broyles Award list? You have to admit anyway... pretty good coordinator hire

IF the SEC doesn't do something about Officiating the game will have as much credibility as the WWE. Getting held up front, WR getting mugged, BS call at end of half and all most of you idiots can do is bitch about Heupel. Sad.
Yeah, I saw what you saw and tuned out to read a novel at the half. I skipped some games earlier this year entirely because I knew with extremely high probability that we would get the Birmingham officiating screw. Crooked SEC officiating has ruined football.

Head coach has to have thick skin and a backbone that allows him to make changes when it benefits the team. I've tried to defend Banks because of last season, but more and more, last season seems like an aberration. Defense has sucked ass more often than not. Time for some changes on that side of the ball. And if Heupel can't make those changes, then he's probably not the man for the job. He gets paid millions to fix this ****. Now he needs to fix this ****.
Valid points but we did have an elite defense last year so I don't think he could have anticipated the wheels falling off like they did this year. I think Heupel wants to win and hope he mixes things up because he won't have that excuse this offseason. I see a lack of speed in the middle of the field and a somewhat bizarre scheme that teams have figured out how to attack. It's probably a combination of coaching and talent. We need a lot of portal help on defense. I do think we finally have some talented young linebackers that have some speed. We need major help on the d-line and in the secondary. I think I would sign fewer high school players and go heavier in the portal moving forward with this crazy new NIL era.

Tim Banks could win the Medal of Honor and Nobel peace prize and it wouldn’t make him competent. It’s doesn’t mean anything. Do you think UGA, Bama, LSU, Ole Miss, etc want him? That is the real measure. He couldn’t get a job there if he begged for it. He’s dead weight and if he’s back next year, it’s clear Heupel doesn’t have what it takes to win a championship.
