I really like this basketball team but wish Cam Carr had stuck around

He’s averaging 33 mpg, 22.7 ppg on 56% FG shooting, 52% 3 point FG, 79% FT, and almost 6 rebounds pg for Baylor.

Hard to question much of anything Barnes has done here, but I felt like Carr and Tobe Awaka were two players that never got the minutes they deserved and would’ve been solid contributors had they remained Vols.

I’m all for team culture over stats. He just wouldn’t have ever been featured here and that’s okay. Good for Cam playing well elsewhere. Don’t want him back.

As for Tobe, I loved him while here but honestly he is what he is. Hard nosed interior mostly below-the-rim player which every team could use some of, but I wouldn’t take him over any of our 4-5 bigs.

I’m guessing he didn’t buy into the defensive culture.

Dude, I forgot this guy existed. It's transfer mania. We are gonna have problems retaining marginal players who have developmental potential, just like every other team. Bottom line, our staff is DEFINITELY in the net+ category when it comes to the transfer portal. If he didn't want to be a Vol, then "don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya" is all I can say.

How and why did they deserve more minutes? What did you know about them that Barnes and his coaches didn't know?

Awaka was one of my favorite players while he was here, but his minutes were strictly a product of his inability to stay on the floor without fouling.

Cam was playing a decent amount before his injury and showed flashes for sure but didn't set the world on fire by any means (granted it was limited)...the issue seemed to be he wasn't doing everything that was being asked of him - addition by subtraction if he wasn't going to buy-in.

Awaka had plenty of playing time - always struggled to stay on the floor due to foul trouble and is undersized for his position which limits his effectiveness in certain match ups.

More like we probably wouldn't have Abram and Carey.

Gillespie is playing a completely different position than Carr and Brown came in knowing he wasn't likely to get heavy minutes in year 1.
Yes, I am aware of that but I was thinking more about the dispersion of NIL funds. Keeping Awaka and Carr around likely would have lessened the load available. Just a thought.

Needed a reset somewhere else. Hope he continues to perform well in the state of Texas

I like the team as well, but Barnes' best days (and record) were at Texas. His Vol teams have never been able to put away decent teams in the second half, period. He's a good coach a wonderful ambassador for UT athletics, but not a great coach. He didn't deserve a lifetime contract. Hurley doesn't have one, Few doesn't, Bill Self doesn't, and they have accomplished much, much more.

Welcome! 🤗
…or not. That’s a lot of Deacon Barnes angst.

Great perspective and thank you for your intelligent insights. You're right, why lockdown a coach who has won SEC tournament, SEC regular season, went to two elite 8s, and has essentially been ranked in top 25 for several weeks straight now.

TN has been ranked in every AP top 25 since the 2021-22 season began. This is 6th consecutive season of not falling out of the AP Top 25.

Little chance that Little Wonder isn’t a troll.
