Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2026-27

Updated SEC stats for those like me that enjoy the numbers. It’s early obviously, too soon for trends to be established, but still interesting to review.

Well that's eye opening. Kim already said they have a lot to work on. Freshman always have a lot to get accustomed to. The full court press is a really hard defense to learn and be effective. These other teams spend a lot more time running offense because most just run man to man or couple different zones.

St. John’s up over Oklahoma St. after 1 quarter. St. John’s is well coached and usually pretty tough.

OSU does not look like a top 25 team to me. Their guard play isn’t very good. They have gotten some hype and have an exciting young coach but I don’t think they’ll be in the top 25 by middle of conference play.

Asking because I don't know well enough the temperature out there for the fanbase of UCLA. What would be considered a "failure" for Gottlieb next season and, follow up, would that be enough to put her on the hot seat?

Check the very first post on this entire thread. This entire thread exists because she cannot coach lol.

They’ll implode within 1-3 years but she’ll jump ship before it completely comes apart. That’s her MO.

She’s a lot to talk and a super recruiter but doesn’t actually coach ball well at all. For some reason she minds me a lot of Elizabeth Holmes (the woman who went to prison for defrauding investors and lying about her blood testing machine). Just a lot of hot air and no substance.

I usually don't pay much attention to the West Coast schools, so I had to look up her record. For somebody who “doesn’t actually coach ball well at all” she has had some surprising results.

Inherited players her first go round. Once the writing was on the wall she bailed.

Same thing will happen at USC.

Makeer had a nice game tonight off the bench for SC, she looks real. Akot playing well also, Winthrop was no contest but was good to see Makeer and McDowell get minutes. Dauda is wasted minutes, Tac is real when given a chance, she needs minutes or I’m afraid she will transfer. She is an easy double double type if given even 20 minutes.

009 (007 reference), I’m not so sure about that. She recruits too well to ever be less than above average and likely always will be at a minimum a fairly deep tourney run type team with that talent. I’m skeptical like you that she can deliver a trophy, but she can keep that job a long time if she keeps recruiting at this level. JMO.

Her track record prior to being the HC at USC was nothing to write home about. Her teams got worse at Cal the longer she was there. But she has become a recruiting monster at SoCal.

Had great athletes at Cal and consistently got worse and not better. Anigwe was one of the best forwards ever recruited and she never got one iota better under Gottlieb. Never had a pro career and that’s a shame.

That will be an interesting school to watch going forward in the B1G.
The B1G is pretty deep and competitive, expected to put the most teams into the tourney this year. You have to be able to coach well to navigate that conference, like the SEC.

yeah, it’s early and some BS built into it, but the projected teams from each conference expected to dance….B1G has 12 early, SEC has 9. TIFWIW.

Push me to make a projection for likely final four teams right now and I would guess something like this where I pick 6 teams with the highest probability…..

Uconn
UCLA
SC
Texas
LSU

and yes…prob Tenn at #6 based upon talent, Cooper, Barker, Spearman and Pauldo foursome is amongst the best top 4 player groups in the game. That would mean 4 SEC teams in play, but you never know how this stuff will play out, injuries happen unfortunately and affect teams. TCU is an early dark horse candidate. Others will emerge.

One prediction…the team that wins the SEC regular season championship will not win the SEC tourney this year. I base that off of the fact that two teams expected to be at/near the top in Texas and LSU have to play each other twice in the regular season. That is a big deal in the grand scheme this season. Yeah, it’s gonna likely be that close this year.

Will depend on the seeds but have to agree. UConn, ucla, sc look like locks to me. Obviously they can have a bad night. I’ll be happy if we (UT) make it to the elite 8. Would love final four but we shall see. Think those five you listed are just ahead of others right now.
