if the hoi polloi were getting as close, and as....personal, with me as a doctor/nurse does during a medical procedure, I would certainly want them to wear a mask. I can't think of a single time I have ever gotten that close and vulnerable with strangers in public.

also said nurse/doctor job is to literally deal with diseases, their exposure is going to be an order of magnitude greater than any individual in public.

wanting the guy who deals with sewage all day to shower and change clothes before he comes in to my house, doesn't mean that I should want everyone to shower and change before I will walk the street with them.

It doesn't matter how many masks they wore, everyone was going to get the cold. Chances are most have had it multiple times, no amount of mask wearing was going to change that.

No, the mask was never ever going to stop you from getting it. You could put on 100 masks, and you were still going to get the cold.
