Lane has to decide by the Egg Bowl his intentions to stay or go. Good, make him stop holding you hostage. Family (not Lane) visited Baton Rouge yesterday and Florida Sunday. If he decides he's gone, I predict it torpedoes any chance that they had going deep in the playoffs.

He would be pretty crazy to leave OM right now, especially for UF which is a dumpster fire. LSU at least has the talent to compete for a national title in 2026, especially if he can convince Nussmeier to return (somewhat likely given he has tanked his draft value this year). UF is going to need a couple of seasons to build that talent back up to be playoff contenders and FSU as a permanent rival doesn't make it easier (FSU is down now, but they won't be down forever).

OM has as good a chance as anyone to win the natty this year. It would be really short sighted to entertain leaving OM in the midst of a playoff run.

This is as bad if not worse than players opting out of bowls games/ hitting the transfer portal before the season is over.

Any coach who negotiates (through his agent of course) a deal with another team before his current team is through playing should owe his current team double the buyout. There is no respect in any of this. I understand that uf and lsu are trying to get the guy they want and sure, send the agent a tentative contract. But that should be the end of it until the season is over. The agent should sit on it until then. The coach should not see it nor hear about the details until after they are done. Maybe the portal and signing windows need to be moved. I dunno. But the system is broken.

He would be a god in Oxford with statues built if he stays and maintains just a playoff-level program, while he's just the 'next guy' at UF or LSU who will be dumped if he's not playing for a natty in 2-3 seasons - or sooner, depending on circumstances. Both places are rife with issues, and he's not exactly the calm program-stabilizing type that both places probably need right now.

I can't imagine why, given what he's already built and that he runs the show in Oxford, he would walk into situations where control will be taken out of his hands to a degree, regardless what he's promised. We obviously aren't privy to inside info, but it just appears from the outside that either move would be reckless.

But this whole thing could very well be nothing more than a charade to get a king's ransom from Ole Miss, just the cost of doing business in the new, sleazy world of CFB. To leave a team, and one that has a legit shot at a natty before the playoff would define Kiffin as the lowest of low lifes.

And this is a playoff team, which makes it way worse imo. People were saying 'wait until players start opting out of the playoffs", well we may have a coach do it first. This crap needs to be fixed.

wow. I thought this was bs when I first heard about it.

I think Ole Miss is dumb for doing this. trying to force Lanes hand isn't going to endear him to stay.

They have no choice. They need to know what he is going to do so they can get in the coach sweepstakes too.

It’s great for Florida and lsu. If the answer is “no”, they can move on quicker.

But, ole miss doesn’t want to wait until Christmas to find out they don’t have a coach

Disagree. Ole Miss shouldn't have to kiss his ass, and with all that's at stake this season they have every right to know how committed he is before the playoff.

Ole Miss "shouldn't" have to kiss his ass but show me their alternative.

There's no way they fire him. They couldn't get another coach as good as Kiffin to Oxford. What do they do....... hire Hugh Freeze?

I believe none of this. I think Oxford knows more about what Kiffin is doing and I believe he's trolling.

sure they have a choice. ride it out.

you think they are seriously going to fire him if they don't get an answer either way?

right before a rivalry game? before the playoffs even happen? they are admitting they don't really care about those games if they do. and what type of message is that for the next coach? Even if you make it to the Playoffs we will still fire you before you can play in them?

this ultimatum is about the only way Ole Miss could make Lane Kiffin the good guy here. He gets to say they are looking to fire me even with the playoffs as an almost certainty.

I don't blame Ole Miss for trying to get their ducks in a row before whatever happens, but to try and make it an ultimatum is a bad idea. its a bluff by Ole MIss where they lose either way.

Or else what? If Lane doesn't decide is Ole Miss going to fire him anyway?

100%. What leverage does Ole Miss have either? You going to fire him when he has two job offers from significantly better programs who are willing to give him whatever he wants? Oh no.

Obviously they aren't going to fire him, but these comments about how Ole Miss should be walking on eggshells are ridiculous. They have a legit shot at a national championship, and the coach is allowing this kind of drama to go on? And I don't disagree that OM is ptobably very aware of what he is doing, and it will in all likelihood end up with him getting a big raise.

Absolutely, but no one benefits more from a CFP appearance and/or a Natty than Lane Kiffin. He's not a bad coach but as a head coach he's not got shiny hardware to show for it.

The trip to the CFP is probably bonus money for him in his contract but it's also tangible verification of his ability. A Natty puts him in a very exclusive club of coaches.

With all this hoopla and circus, if Ole Miss comes out flat in the Egg Bowl or CFP, any blowback Kiffin gets for distracting his team is 100% justified.

Narcissism eventually catches up to people and if this is his lesson, I'm here for it. It's entertaining to watch, however, because I'm not invested in Kiffin's career nor Ole Miss.
