Official Gramps' Memorial Eternal OT Thread

I am so tired of these big10 fans yapping that " the road to the title runs thru the Big10 " because they managed to FINALLY win a couple instead of SEC teams....I am deeply conflicted about the playoffs.

I hate Ohio State and Michigan nearly as much as I hate the pups and flarda... hell I dont know who to pull for in the playoffs. USF with Golesh as coach is definitely gonna be my favorite (easy choice) if/when they get the G5 auto bid. After they get waxed by somebody I am out of options. Indiana?? Who else to pull for? I am gonna despise half the teams that make it. This sucks.

Don't leave out ND; they've slithered back into the conversation. The big something teams have an incestuous relationship - the top teams play their weak little sisters week in and week out to pad the resume. If you look at several, they've played nobody all year - and still count PN St as a top 10 win. The SEC is playing FAFO in falling for the 9 conference game plan - should have made it a thing to play a big whatever little sister or two instead.

Gotta remember Bama was doing NIL before NIL became a thing - at least a legal thing. When Saban saw things shifting in an unfavorable way, he exited the scene. There will be some teams that for the time being manage to buck the system; but with NIL and the portal, once great teams and coaches "without peer" are in for hard times. This year's coaching turnover is likely just a taste of what's coming. The next kick in the head is going to be the thing with scholarship limits and no walk-ons if it comes to be. That ruling if finalized means that there is absolutely no amateurism in collegiate sports - and absolutely no reason for collegiate teams - let the pros take care of feeder teams like baseball does now.

Another light came on yesterday when the announcers mentioned the players like Thomas who started at NMSU and then later finally seeing Mac and Merk getting to play. Watch for teams more and more to raid the portal for the next skilled players and depend less and less on recruiting new talent - haven't got time to get them up to speed when they might not even pan out like our last wonder QB. Hard to evaluate Mac and Merk when all they get is garbage time and without the top supporting cast, but they look a long long way from ready.
Saban and Bama paying players is a common narrative here. And I am not saying it didn't happen. I am saying we were doing it, too. But I guess it isn't a problem for us because we sucked at it.
There has been no investigation nor disciplinary action against Bama over his 17 years there.
I think it is more likely he was simply the best head coach in the history of the sport.

I think Saban was very good just like the Bear, but I also think they had a lot of help financially. The reserves on the bench were better than the starters at most other schools - that makes it hard to lose. tOSS U and MI probably were similar in bench strength, and likely for the same reason as Bama. There's always been plenty of under the table money in college football, but some teams really excelled. Isn't it Bama that hasn't had a holding call against them in like 17 years?

Bama was disciplined for textbook scandal but got a slap on the wrist there (where other teams that were still on probation would have got hit hard)

You had the entire Bo Davis thing but Bama skirted that as well by firing him....

Bama had enough pull with the NCAA to get Bama grads to lead the NCAA investigation into Hugh Freeze after he beat Saban twice.

Fully agree Saban is the GOAT though.

Is there any evidence Bama was paying under the table any more than every other team including us?

But yea, Saban is the GOAT.
I find the "Saban cheated" narrative to be a load of sour grapes.
I understand why intelligent people like AM64 are compelled to repeat it. But is rings hollow to me.

But if anyone thinks the Ole Miss job = Bama job, what are the odds that the staff investigator and manager of a NCAA investigation into Bama would be a Tennessee or Auburn grad?

Not that I know of, but then neither the SEC or NCAA ever had the judicial power to really investigate. If a dead whale washed up on the beach, then they might have had to admit to the possibility of a dead whale, but they would never have gone looking in the ocean for a dead whale. Maybe they would have decided from satellite surveillance there are no dead whales in nearby ponds and small lakes. Most fraudulent activity is intended not to be found, and you won't find it unless you have the desire and power to go looking. Something had to be really blatant for the SEC or NCAA to trip over it.

This has been the case for about 3 decades now. If you pay a student activity fee then you should have access to a ticket if you desire one, this goes for any university.

Actually longer than that. The activity fee was implemented while I was a student. Probably between 72 - 75 and not the 64 - 67 first round. Students do fund athletics; it's not a one way thing the other way. And students do not get to use all the facilities that the activity fee supposedly covers.

A later post is right. If you don't hook students as spectators while they are in school, you cannot count on their interest, money, enthusiasm after graduation. Student seating should definitely be expanded.

Consider this. There is probably around 500 people playing for or working for a ncaa football team.
Over 17 years that's a lot of folks who maintain a vow of silence.
Again, not pretending they didn't cheat. Just contending we did it too. Pruitt got caught after 3 years.
