RIP to my papaw. He served and fought for this country fighting the Japanese tooth and nail for 3 years of his life from 1941-1944. Thankfully, he lived to talk about it. He passed in 2007 at the age of 84. He was a remarkable person and the best Grandfather you could ask for.
That's awesome! RIP.

Was he a fellow Marine of mine? In any case those guys that fought in the pacific theater were made of iron.

In fairness, there is a day for them as well.
Unfortunately many people now get Memorial Day and Veterans Day mixed up. It’s not their fault it’s our pitiful education system that doesn’t teach real history anymore. Veterans Day was originally armistice day where Ww1 the war to end all wars ended on the 11th month on the 11th day @ the 11th hour Memorial Day is just that to memorialize those that died in service to our country! So as Paul Harvey once said now you know the rest of the story.

Served 1971-1992 USAF.
Gold Star Dad--My son A1C Charles T. Lindsey died in Bahrain Nov 1st, 1995 while deployed from Randolph AFB, TX to Saudi then TDY from there to Bahrain. He was a security forces policeman. He was 22. A few years ago they named the main gate at Randolph after him. Definitely proud.
I always salute all service members & veterans.

I was at my grandson's school today as a a guest. Every year veterans are invited on Veterans' Day. The school provides food. As we walked to the gym for the program, the students lined the hall waving flags and singing patriotic songs. Veterans were seated on the gym floor and were ask to stand as the song connected to their branch of service was played. The National Anthem was played by the band. All stood and said the Pledge of Allegiance. The guest speaker, a veteran, explained the meaning of the 11th hour of the 11th day Armistice Day/ Veterans Day meaning. In his remarks closing the program, the school principal fully explained the significance and difference between Veterans' Day and Memorial Day. Every public school in the county where my grandson goes to school invites veterans to a similar program each year. Every public school in the countywhere I live does the same thing. I am an 81 year old vet and most people my age don't seem to know the difference between Veterans' Day and Memorial Day. If you think schools in your community are doing a "pitiful" job, perhaps you should run for school board or get on the school board's agenda and express your concerns.

I’ve got a better solution ! I homeschool my children. They learn what’s important zero indoctrination. Maybe where you live the schools are good but I live in a blue state and like most blue state schools they suck! Now that I am retired we are moving soon!

My favorite veteran is my dad. He's infamous at UT for driving down the steps out of the presidential court (and getting stuck) thinking it was a ramp, after he dropped me off at Carrick Hall for my first day of my freshman year way back in September of 1975. I sure do miss him.
