Preferred bowl opponent?

Please, nobody cared about them before. The revisionist history on bowls is hilarious. As if anyone ever gave a damn about the Liberty Bowl or Music City Bowl, especially at a place like Tennessee.
Before BCS I cared. Ohio State Citrus Bowl, Miami Sugar Bowl, the two blow out losses to Penn State šŸ˜ž . Back then it wasn’t about just finishing #1. Maybe it was just me.

You said the playoffs made them meaningless; they've always been meaningless. The Liberty Bowl and the Music Bowl and all the bowls like it have always meant pretty much nothing but extra practice.
No, they haven't always been meaningless. Of course you probably weren't around when there were only 10-11 bowls. Before the playoffs the better bowls weren't meaningless either. I was pumped in 2022 when we played in the Orange bowl

No it was not just you. Some of these folks must be really young and evidently don’t remember anything prior to 1990. Before the BCS, a bowl game was the reward for a good season. Players and fans enjoyed the trips and especially one of the major bowls. (I too remember the Sugar Bowl against Miami.) Try telling players and fans back then that that game meant nothing.

Now with the playoffs, opt outs, the transfer portal and 100 bowl games, nobody cares. Outside of the playoffs, they have been rendered meaningless.

Yep, just how ESPN wanted it. The bowl system was always fine. The only people who needed it to change were the people who wanted to concentrate it into a single product they could then purchase and own.

I have no shame in saying that I’d like to play someone inferior that we can beat the hell out of to end the season on a high note. Let’s play Iowa again.
Iowa looks stout and very physical up front. Not sure we want to face a physical, power team. We're a finesse bunch this year.

I do. Grew up with bowls. Like 'em....a lot. Great trips and a reward for a season well played.
That used to be the case. But I don’t call making some made for TV bowl game with a 7 and 5 or a 6 and 6 record a ā€œseason well playedā€. Anybody with a pulse makes a bowl game nowadays. I won’t even bother addressing the opt outs. Will probably watch ours on TV but I dang sure wouldn’t spend any money to go to one of the lesser bowls anymore.

Well, when you're 7-5, you look under every rock for something positive.

I like the bowl games. It's one last chance to watch the Vols before the long off season.

Of course I would prefer the playoffs, but it is what it is.

Go Vols!!!
