Hire Jerod Mayo as DC

He wasn’t doing the job. Steven Belichick was the defensive play caller.
Correct, but the defensive coordinator does more than call plays.

Mayo was doing about 75% of the job or more. It's a bizarre situation when you let one guy run the D all week, do all the analysis and set up the game plan and then let your son call plays on gameday. It's one of several decisions that exposed a post-Brady Belichick.

Did anyone on the defensive staff miss the FG to beat UGA?
Did anyone on defense jump offsides to make the UGA kick 5 yards further?

Did anyone on the defense cause Sanders to block the wrong guy causing a scoop and score Saturday night?

Did anyone on the defense throw 2 terrible picks Saturday night?

Did anyone on the defense miss a chip shot fg Saturday night?

That said the defense has not been good but losing 2 high level CVS is not been helpful to the defense.
It was the defense that almost lost to Miss St and Arkansas. It was the defense and scheme that allowed alabama to go on a 99 yard drive cause they played 15 yards off the receivers. So yes offense has problems but the scheme on defense is poor and that's why pass defense is one of the worst in the country.

Heupel needs to make some changes and Mayo would kill it on the recruiting trail and he didnt get a fair shake with the Patriots.
Not sure Mayo would be any better than what we have now and in fact, could be worse..

I know this is hard, but this is where you need face the fact that just because, once upon a time, they were a standout for UT, doesn't guarantee they'll be a great coach or recruiter for that matter.

There is nothing wrong with Banks. Our defense was solid last year and we lost both our starting DBs this year. (One being a 1st round talent). Let’s sit back and see how the defense looks next year.

With how good our defense was last year I have no doubt Banks can get us there again.

Nevermind the top two corners are out for the year and our "best athlete" at safety can't decide when and if he wants to play. I'm not saying that with Jermod and Ricky were a top ten D but don't try to say the defense is not noticeably different if those two are playing.

Or are you suggesting that we should play in your face man coverage 100% of the time? Don't believe that because you "ball out" playing Madden that your take has more validity. It doesn't. No if you want to criticize tackling, bad angles etc we may have some agreements there because Teelander is still running in a straight line and the Arkansas QB is still running away from him right this second.

If you can’t rush and win with four, you have to send one or two more. That makes the defense much worse. If you can’t lock down in the defensive backfield, you give up easy throws and try to prevent the devastating ones. Analytics say that you don’t list games giving up 5 yard gains. 20+ yard plays are what kill you. So, we don’t have the guys in the secondary to challenge and so we play a bit soft and the rush suffers.
The solution is then to blitz people and we get a mix of great and terrible. You then hope that the great makes the offense off schedule so the defense gets a predictable situation which allow you to mitigate your weaknesses by having a tactical advantage. But, we aren’t winning enough of those situations early and thus we are COOKED!

I’m not done with banks quite yet….but….If Auburn doesn’t hire him go after Durkin as DC. AU has multiple issues….D ain’t one of them. He’s the only reason AU has been in all their games.

I know he had a player die at Maryland but likely more to the situation.

I’d give him a shot.

Not for me - the UMd situation is disqualifying IMO.

Tim Banks is fine , he’s not changed his coaching style. Most of the fans were praising him last season , up for an award ! Would not have made playoffs without the Defense! Personnel is the problem right now. Can’t lose 2 NFL CB’s for the whole season!! Not to mention DL injuries, players leaving.
do the other 100 or so teams ahead of us in def rankings have two NFL CB’S??

Anytime a former player’s name comes up for a job at UT, I always ask, if he had never played here, would he be a candidate? If the answer is no, then he shouldn’t be coaching here. If Mayo had gone to VA Tech instead, people on here wouldn’t even mention him for a position on staff.
Sort of the same mindset with people thinking the Titans should be drafting a bunch of UT players every year

We have a good defensive coordinator, but injuries have decimated our defense…
Both starting corners are hurt.
Half of our defensive line is hurt.
Our best linebacker has turf toe in both feet.

Not to mention Boo Carter has basically quit on the team(he will probably be headed back to the Chattanooga crips when the season is over).

LMAO the Chattanooga Crips blast nearly made me spit my drink everywhere. 🤣🤣🤣

Answer the question I asked. And I agree the defense is not great. But when rubber meets road this season the defense lost the Alabama game. The offense lost the Oklahoma game and Max Gilbert lost the Georgia game.

The offense netted us 11 points (scored 20, handed the Tide 9) in the Bama game. There is no damn way you could reasonably expect our defense or any other defense to hold that Bama team to 10 points. The defense held Bama to about their season scoring average. It was a good enough effort to win with what should have been a reasonable offensive output for a Heupel offense.

As for the UGA game, kickers miss kicks. Part of the game. We lost that game by putting the win on the defense in crunch time. The defense had been getting pushed around all game and the offense was killing it. That was a coaching miscalculation.

The defense pretty well blew the Arky and MSU games, but the offense bailed them out.

The Arkansas game was never in question. We had a 17 point lead entering the 4th. Arkansas wasn’t going to a score 3 times in the 4th.

So, he can come in and the 1st loss or bad season get ran off by our fans uneducated and unreasonable takes for a defense? He's a VFL, but after a twnure of DC here, he'd probably get his credentials revoked.

I understand your perspective.

I don’t think he was the impetus behind the situation, but as the head coach Buck stops with him (be nice if it worked that way in all endeavors).

Still….a hellofa good DC. Almost took the barn to beat Vandy today.
