This ESPN/Disney deal sounds like it's getting ugly

I've heard some good things about DirectTV stream. Their sports package for $59 doesn't look too bad. It includes ESPN Unlimited, Fox Sports, TNT and TruTV (so you don't miss the CFB playoff games), along with a bunch of other stuff like NBA TV, NFL Network, etc.

One thing of note…if you have LG SmartTV, it does not have the DirecTV app and so u will need a Roku or firestick

I've had YTTV for a few years now and I'm about to the point of canceling. I can handle missing a basketball game here and there, but I absolutely WILL NOT miss a Vols football game. And I have zero interest in watching the Big10.

I have Issues with both Disney Corp and the Google monopoly over everything web related. I am getting better at trying to separate myself from TV including college sports, which I used to love. You can choose which monster you want to support but either way you are making the giants stronger.
Colleges have sold their souls (individual rights) to the mega, own all, corporation.
For everyone wanting to splurge on these college athletes salaries, remember Disney/ESPN has the SEC contract, and pays all the TV rights money to these schools.
NOW, who is going to pay Disney/ESPN back. We the fans.

That is what I have been doing. Dumped Disney+ bundle and won’t go back. Peacock gone as well.

Not sure where I will stop or what is next, but there comes a point where the offerings are not worth the cost.
When you state “the offerings are not worth the cost”, my mind immediately goes to NIL money. A scheme to withdraw additional money from fans and businesses, to support athletes who used to be supported by schools giving scholarships.

Not a bad deal if you're getting it cheaper. That $29.99 deal is only a limited time for 12 months.

(currently $35.99/month for ad-supported plan or $44.99/month for premium plan)

I have a bunch of streaming subscriptions but Disney/Hulu just isn't something I personally watch.

Out of curiosity, I just checked how much I'm paying for YouTube TV. It's $89.99 plus I play $9.99 for 4k/unlimited home streams. so $99.98 plus tax.
Same except I also pay for the NFL Redzone package. Who wants to go back to cable? It's possibly cheaper now.

I’m in the exact same boat. Cancelling Disney and Hulu are a lot more difficult due to family entertainment. I tried ESPN unlimited and have it until the end of the month, but I went ahead and canceled that subscription. Canceling ESPN lowered my bill from $38 to $19 a month.

I’m trying to convince my wife to cancel YouTube TV, but we share it with someone in the family in exchange for Netflix. I really believe I can do without any of it as long as I have my toddler to entertain me.

Good for you. Enjoy those toddler years. Every stage goes so fast, they will be graduating before you can imagine.

I have DirecTV Stream and have been happy with it. We got caught in this mess last year. Honestly, these TV deals are getting out of hand. Gone are the days of simply having ESPN included in your cable package. It feels like everything these days is a subscription, just to milk us all for more money.

Rant over lol

I switched to Hulu in about 3 minutes on Saturday before the game. Cancelled YouTube at the same time. Paying less for 6 months and can switch back anytime. It’s like they forget you don’t have to call the cable guy to make a change. I bet YouTube lost a lot of subscribers..

I think this whole contract issue is a longer term plan for Disney. They lose money for a short term from YTTV and cause people to switch to Hulu / ESPN bundle. They give customers what they want and a price break for 12 months. Then they have you switched from their biggest competitor (YTTV) and the price goes up after 12 months. After they think they have converted as many YouTube customers as their analysis says is possible, they reach agreement with YouTube and start collecting for them again.
Doesn’t matter which you side with, Google or Disney, they both are just overpowering companies that control way too much.

Excellent info, Freak. Even at the normal $70/mth + $20 for the "Kids package" for keeping rugrats pacified that's a reasonable deal at $90. It's certainly good for 2 months with the discounts as a "stop gap" until they work this out.

It probably won't pass "the wife test" for me but it might work for family who were using YTTV at about that regular cost. Less fru fru channels for sure but a pretty solid option for a couple of months. Thx.
Spectrum offers Tv Select for $105 dollars and you also get 7 big streaming apps included ( ESPN unlimited peacock paramount+ AMC+ Disney+/ Hulu. Vix foxone

I'm just gonna do Fubo trials every weekend until this ends. It's not too hard to make a new email address. I'm not giving Disney the satisfaction of taking another customer from YT. I've been with YTTV for many years and do not want to switch.

It'll pass, it has to, there too much money and too many ratings at stake. I heard on the radio today Disney gets $12 for every YTTV sub, and they are wanting to up that to $15, which to me is absurd. Disney is the greedy enemy here, not Google. Disney paid a fortune for SEC football rights, and now they are holding them hostage. Whatever happens, I will NEVER EVER sign up for ESPN unlimited. Screw those greedy bastards.

So much for cutting the cord. They draw us in with early savings then gradually increase the prices to cable levels or beyond. The old frog in the pot scenario. I've been saying it for a while. The next step will be to make everything PPV. It's why I've been slowly but surely building my book library. It's coming. I can feel it.

Thankfully my wife works for Ingram Book Company, we have books out the window.

I have nothing but disdain for both parties here, but...

Disney better be careful. Google is a lot more than just YTTV. They can screw Disney is so many ways. This could get ugly.

Do you really think this isn’t Disney and Google playing good cop/ bad cop on us consumers? They both just want us to pay more for less.

I doubt their mutual investors will allow either of them to cause too much damage to one another. Vanguard owns the most shares of each company. The only way that a settlement gets made in which none of us get price gouged is if enough of us cancel both services.

In fact, there is no good cop. Just two bad cops with the same boss calling the shots.

Well, it's interesting that both have competing streaming services. Disney is also acquiring all the competition, so it's complicated. YTTV would seem to be at a clear disadvantage if not for Google's ability to use it's broader portfolio of businesses as leverage in negotiations.
