Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

I don't think Lewis and Beasley are worth keeping. Lewis has no wiggle and can't catch and Beasley can't beat out Turrentine and Farooq.
I don’t think either has hit their ceiling yet.

Doubt we don’t pay Lewis with thomas gone and no rb in the current class. That would leave us with 3 scholarship backs.

Beasley I could see, but I think he’s pretty committed to the program. What’s his snap count look like this year compared to rest of the db group? I’m hoping he comes back in spring to try and challenge for a starting spot before considering transferring out.

To be clear...that loss came down to turnovers.

OU had 2 drives in the first quarter, both were punts after just 5 plays.

2nd quarter they had 3 total drives, 2 coming after INTs and both times they got the ball inside TN's 35 and each drive they were held to a FG

3rd quarter they had 4 drives total first was 5 plays that ended in a punt, 2nd drive they drove 65 yards and fumbled it we then went 3 and out and punted right back to them for their 3rd drive they marched and scored a TD. 4th and final drive of the 3rd they marched again but got held to another long FG.

4th quarter we got the INT to end their first drive the 2nd drive they got back on our 44 after the onside kick and had the big run up the middle then a TD on the next play. Last drive was after the onside and that was ball game.

If at a minimum we don't hand them 13 points off turnovers that's a win 27 to 20.

But yeah, that drive after the fumble recovery when it was 17-16 and we had the ball on our own 10....game changing that we went 3 and out there and it was 3 straight runs too.

Then the VERY next drive we're down 23-17 and throw the ball 3 straight times...
One of your better posts.

So defense did their job nearly the entire game except a couple times on 3rd and long when it mattered most.

Again. A dumb comparison. So what if he averages 8.5 wins per year? What does that really mean given what's transpired the last few years? Let me help you. NO. One of the last places we went into as a staff had gone 3-27 the previous 3 years. The first year we were 5-5. The staff did a MUCH better coaching job that year than 2 years later when we were 8-2. You can analyze however you want to. Not sure if anyone is going to change your mind and don't really care if I do. Anyone on here who wants to get rid of Heupel becomes of some arbitrary ceiling or some perceived fatal shortcomings is quite frankly, clueless. Carry on.
I think there’s a couple people that may have lost faith in heupel as a long term answer to our “elite” standard we are wanting to uphold.

The majority of us are just frustrated that he hasn’t broken through the very good to elite barrier yet, believing that he can, and not wanting to see him go backwards like he did at ucf.

If anything the fit int the offense and success of Joey raised the expectations of everyone who saw what he was doing and capable of on the field. All we saw was the best deep throw qb in the country. Then he had the type of game that got him a reputation as interception-prone, with ones that were lazy at best and downright unbelievable foolish at worst.

Everyone knows the only coach the Gator fans want is Kiffin. Every time Drink's name comes up the person who brought it up gets shouted down. But Florida is going to have to go down the list past Drink. I don't think anyone who truly understands how the hierarchy in the SEC completely shifted with NIL/Portal expected Drink or Lane to leave. Both Ole Miss and Mizzou have more money to roster-build.

“There was a lot of buzz about Drink and Florida in coaching circles for a few days there and then it seemed to go away late in the week. He reengaged with Mizzou about a potential extension.”

-247's Chase Parham

It's probably been discussed but this is the word out of Kiffin's camp:

“The staff has told me that he’s staying and we’re still locked in for the long haul.”
They’re going to end up with fisch if I had to guess. Maybe Lea or locksley. Who knows. Like lsu, probably a top job, but will the administration tank the attractiveness?

man we keep recruiting kids and paying them to sit. really at some point money is just a thing that everyone has. no differentiation. so you lose your starters. we have to play the kids we recruit
We are playing quite a few freshman this year. More so the last 3 games. The coaches know they can’t come into next year with the same numbers as far as a really young roster but with both freshman and sophomores basically being rookies. We’ve got to figure out how to become more experienced next year, knowing that our experienced leaders are likely all gone after seasons end: Aguilar, brazzell, Carter, moi, Eason, Bailey, west, Joseph’s, McCoy, Turrentine, hood.

55 yards isn't that big a deal anymore. College kickers make those easily. Youjust see fewer overall FG attempts because too many coaches go for far too many 4th down conversions.
Not a good take imo.

College kickers do not make those easily lol

I would venture to guess there aren’t fewer field goal attempts either as the game itself becomes more offense friendly.

Was I the only one yelling at the TV that #32 was lined up in the neutral zone at the start of the 70 yd fumble return for touchdown?
I was there, in the corner of the end zone, and I could tell. I was screaming it as the ball was snapped. So distracted by the missed penalty I didn’t realize what was happened until kitz had missed the tackle.

Is it wrong to think the expectation should be to make the playoffs every year? I'm not saying you fire a coach for missing it one year, like we'll miss it this year. But if Heupel were to miss the playoffs 3-4 straight years in a row, would that not be a sign it was time to move on? I know every year isn't realistic, but making it once every three years, that should be realistic, IMO. I mean, schools like Alabama, Georgia, Texas, Ohio State... Those schools' fanbases have the expectations of making it every year. So it's not like I'm putting us on an unreachable pedestal. Making it one out of three years seems like a fair expectation. We made it last year. We missed it this year. Should we miss it another couple of years, then yeah, I think Heupel should be on the hotseat. But that's not now. Now is hoping they come back next year, stronger and tougher and ready to kick ass. But the expectation every year, IMO, should be make the playoffs.

One thing it feels like this team lacks overall, IMO, is toughness. Both mental and physical toughness. Someone on the staff needs to be drill sgt and toughen these boys up. When they hit somebody, whether on offense or defense, it needs to be hard, and it needs to be mean. I've not seen that very much from our guys this year, but I saw it plenty from the Oklahoma defense in our game. Intensity. I'm not sure our guys have enough.

I wouldn’t be mad rolling with GMac. His arm is stronger than Joey, and he throws a beautiful deep ball.
Call me crazy, but when we recruited him I was ecstatic because I really think GMac, not Brandon, can be the QB of the future for this team. I’m not disqualifying Brandon at all, but I see a lot in GMac that has me believing he can be the next big thing.

I mean with the expansion coming up and going to 16-teams I believe it’s, I don’t think it’s wrong to say every year. That’s basically saying we should be Top 16 or better every year in the final poll. Nothing wrong with that statement. In fact, aside from the decade of despair, that was our reality for a very long time.

I believe in Heupel and I do believe he can get us to Atalanta at the very least, BUT he has to fix the staff around him. Fix the staff and Top 16 or better every year should be a reality.

I wasn’t impressed with Ament tonight. He played timid at times, and when he did drive he missed several finishes. Given the talk about him I had high expectations, but he’s got some work to do. I really liked Dewayne Brown. Didn’t play like a freshman.
He was our leading scorer and rebounder

Hope Barnes finds a way to get depth on the court. This team is deep. And is really talented.

Let’s not overreact to last night, gotta remember we are essentially returning only 2 contributors from last year’s team. Give em a couple of games to gel and we’ll be fine.

Also, Ament played solid last night and will only get better, so not sure where the “Ament is a disappointment” talk is coming from

I find it kind of ironic that AP and other beat writers have more or less stated that the staff wishes they got Nico more reps in 2023 so he would have more experience for 2024, yet here we are with Merk essentially being one foot out the door and we have him as qb2 and have only played GMac in one game…

He’s absolutely right.

Still hate the smug lucky sob. Hope Osu gets the death penalty.
Wish all local Knoxville media and volquest would watch this and then post it all over twitter and the web and STFU and quit looking for drama

Yes we need coaching upgrades
Yes players are leaving in portal just like they do from other teams
Yes we will replace them
Yes we lost Tony V but replaced him with another winner

Yes bball is starting slow

Yes Barnes will fix them

Yes our fans are ****ing psycho
Yes they need to be fixed lol
