Hire Jerod Mayo as DC

I dont know about that. I know that he was picked by Kraft to be the head coach because of how respected he was. He inherited an awful roster and he had his growing pains. When he chose to not lose the last game of the year, he was fired and the Patriots hired one of the most sought after coaches in the sport.
He didn't get fired over that game

Just to be clear, the goalpost we are discussing here is NFL headcoach. I think the nail in the coffin was when Mayo beat the Bills to miss out on the #1 overall pick. This is very similar to Brian Flores who was allegedly fired for not talking in Miami, who has continued being a great coach after. It was unfortunate for Mayo that Vrabel, a coach with connections to Kraft and a track record of making the playoffs in a not great organization was available.

I dont doubt you that there could have been some locker room issues when you are not winning football games, but no one expected them to win games before the year started. Mayo was stuck breaking in a rookie QB on an awful roster. I still think he knows defense and hes a winner.
I was responding to the comment about him bringing disciple and changing the culture in the locker room when I brought that up.

I haven’t seen Mayo call defenses or recruit. Being a Vol doesn’t negate lack of experience in those two major areas.

Mayo was a holdover for Vrabel. More like an interim coach, Just a SWAG but I think that Vrabel was on a sabbatical for a year or suspended for a year.

Why was he fired? New England had a O/U win total of 4.5 in the preseason. Its not like the results on the field were surprising to anyone.
Vrabel came onto the market, plus there were team cohesion issues Mayo wasn't addressing. Bottom line is that it was a Kraft loyalty hire but it became apparent he was in over his head never having managed that many responsibilities

He was always a placeholder. When Vrabel became available, the decision was easy. They would have hired Vrabel to replace Belichick, but it was written into Mayo’s contract that he would succeed Belichick. Mayo also didn’t do himself any favors in the locker room with some of the things he said in press conferences.

He has never been a DC. A HC yes but not a DC.

Give me Tim Banks with a somewhat loaded deck everyday and twice on Tuesday.

I think people were upset he switched to Maye, which was clearly the right decision for Vrabel. Its hard being a first time head coach with a rookie QB and the worst roster. New England spent the most money in free agency this year.

I still think Mayo is the same guy who earned that job. I dont think he was given a fair shot and if anything im sure he learned alot. I know he hasn't called plays, but I dont doubt his knowledge of defense.

At the end of the day this is hypothetical and wont happen.

Heupel needs to make some changes and Mayo would kill it on the recruiting trail and he didnt get a fair shake with the Patriots.

I'm all about Mayo. You are correct he got a terrible shake with the Patriots. But explain why after (I agree the defense has been a struggle this season) the best defensive effort all season you would signal out that side of the ball? David Sanders, Max Gilbert, and Joey Aguilar mistakes lost us this game Saturday. It's no knock on them the just made mistakes that prevented us from winning.

Tim Banks is fine , he’s not changed his coaching style. Most of the fans were praising him last season , up for an award ! Would not have made playoffs without the Defense! Personnel is the problem right now. Can’t lose 2 NFL CB’s for the whole season!! Not to mention DL injuries, players leaving.

I would give Banks another year. Last year our D was the reason we got to the playoffs. One of the best red zone defenses in the conference. Hard to say what happened this year but injuries were a part of it, and I think we didn't have the right leadership in the locker room that is crucial to be elite.

Did anyone on the defensive staff miss the FG to beat UGA?
Did anyone on defense jump offsides to make the UGA kick 5 yards further?

Did anyone on the defense cause Sanders to block the wrong guy causing a scoop and score Saturday night?

Did anyone on the defense throw 2 terrible picks Saturday night?

Did anyone on the defense miss a chip shot fg Saturday night?

That said the defense has not been good but losing 2 high level CB'S is not been helpful to the defense.

We have a good defensive coordinator, but injuries have decimated our defense…
Both starting corners are hurt.
Half of our defensive line is hurt.
Our best linebacker has turf toe in both feet.

Not to mention Boo Carter has basically quit on the team(he will probably be headed back to the Chattanooga crips when the season is over).

Anytime a former player’s name comes up for a job at UT, I always ask, if he had never played here, would he be a candidate? If the answer is no, then he shouldn’t be coaching here. If Mayo had gone to VA Tech instead, people on here wouldn’t even mention him for a position on staff.
