Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

Fact is the landscape has changed. The average fan doesn't understand that with NIL and the Portal a coach can build a team at a lot of places other than the traditional powers or destination schools. The brand doesn't mean as much as it used to. A good coach can win at a lot of places now.
Very true. College football is forever changed. Those with money will win. That is until they add real caps, which who knows when they will ever get it under control.

Luckily, our spending is very good. We will be top five in the conference this year and going into next year.

No reason we can’t win nine consistently and be in the expanded playoff (should be at least 16 soon) with a good coach. This job got way better because of NiL for all sports and we can get almost anyone we want with DW.

I think Heupel is good and I hope he makes some changes to his staff to become great. He needs help with the small details to take the next step IMO

i am not trying to place blame on our fans thats absurd but god it got so quiet throughout so much of the broadcast it was stunning. OU '15 feels lightyears away from this
I think it was said best by an OU fan actually. He said, "Tonight was like a 4 hr concert with a football game in-between to watch." He said it as a compliment but it made me wonder if all of the glitz and glammor of "the show" drains the crowd enough to not have the same consistent roar we are so accustomed too. I get the way the game played out is a factor but fans can only give out so much energy for 4 hours straight.

Get rid of the stupid Dj.

Get rid of the WiFi.

The games are sold out easily. Make sure the people there want to be there and are there for football only.

Th

at seems like a loser mentality
I understand what your saying but 10 win regular season is attainable and should be the goal
9/8 win seasons are gonna be tough to make the future playoffs

Adding 4 more teams gives the other conferences a better chance then the sec to get more teams especially with the damn 9 game conference schedule IMO
9 win seasons prob wont be as tough as you think to make the playoffs with a 9 game sec schedule and expanded playoff to 16.

teams almost got in last yr at 9-3 with an 8 game league schedule and 12 team format. Its going to be an inevitable blood bath for everyone.

“Why doesnt perlotte play?! He’s so good” this is why. LB’s are terribly coached

It was kind of comical to watch both just torpedo the OTs on both sides. I'd love to know what on earth they were thinking. At first I thought maybe they were blitzing off the edges, but neither even tried to go around the engaged OL, they just smashed right into them.

Edit just the left side guy, at the least the right side guy was playing the edge. But how was literally nobody left to cover the middle?

Admittedly, I haven't read all of the posts in this thread since the game ended, and this probably has already been said. But it's really becoming apparent to me that CJH needs help with game management. As we all know, he's calling the plays, his plate is full managing the game and it's distracting him from making critical decisions for things like clock management etc.

I can't believe we actually have fans that want to fire Heupel and Danny White. Some of us are nuts.
Who has said that? Please post it.

Not attacking you but it’s getting tiresome seeing everyone twist words when I haven’t seen anyone say fire Heupel or especially Danny.

DW is happy as long as stadium is full. Stadium stays full at 9 wins. Learn to love it.
Yep. It's always about the dollar bills.

Funny story... with the streaming fiasco going on I was going back and forth on whether to buy the day pass from Sling. My wife said, it's $5 just buy it! I said it's not the $5 it's whether or not I want to get my blood pressure boiling and spend $5. I knew what was going to happen before the game kicked off. Well I was able to stream it on ESPN3 under my current plan without paying any additional money. At least I got my blood pressure up for free.

There were three young men (I'm being kind) behind us who thought they were narrating a bipolar, vulgarity-only, podcast monologue the whole game. If a play went poorly: f*** Josh Heupel, fire his @$$. If a play went well: Heupel is a genius, give him a raise. Same for every player. Anyone whose name they knew. I thought they were trying to be funny, almost like they were narrating some podcast, but as the game wore on, I realized that was the depth of their perspective on life and the program. They were probably college students. They were not drunk, though they could have been under the influence of some drug. They are probably registered to vote. They are of the age where procreation is a real danger. They truly believed their behavior was normal. They're not relegated to Gainesville, Tuscaloosa, Athens, Lexington, Columbia, etc. We've got them too.

No one. It's if you are critical, you automatically want him fired. Just the way it is.

"Dang! I wish Josh had called timeout"

"Why do you want him fired? Do you not know where we've been the last 15 years?"

I didn't say you did, you have asked for staff changes., which I agree with. I do t know if anyone in the RF has, but there were people in the FF saying it. I know it's the FF , bit it's still part of our base.

It’s insane. It’s so frustrating

I didn’t say 8-4 is the goal. I said you still have to be able to enjoy those seasons because it’s not a bad season. As I said the other day- Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, LSU, Texas, A&M, Oklahoma, Auburn… that’s 9 teams just in the SEC that all have fan bases thinking they belong in the playoff every year. The math doesn’t work. We aren’t going to win 10 games every year. It is stupid and counterproductive to be talking about firing Heupel because we lost a few close games to teams that I just named.
I like CJH
I said last night I think he’s better then his surrounding cast and they are holding him back

I found it very helpful to watch the game at the gym (without sound). My blood pressure stayed rather low and I think I have a more 'realistic' perspective on the game. Maybe I'll watch all games that way. I tried listening to the Vol Network and watch the game but they are just way too out of sync. I did this btw because of the ESPN/YouTube thing.

I don’t think anyone wants heupel fired right now.

It was loud as crap in the stadium. It was an absolutely electric atmosphere. There is no blaming lack of Neyland effect or fancy people not vested.

I like Sterl. Especially before the game starts.

Don’t care one way or the other about WIFI. Actually, I do like to check other game scores.

I don’t understand those of you who want to shut down all heupel criticism. The bottom line is he hired the assistants and some of them stink. He has also made many bad in game calls.

I do believe the coaching has cost us more than one game this year. That is a problem. I don’t want to be in the coaching carousel. I also do not want to add a bigger buyout.

Would you say this last loss was more coaching or execution? I agree with you that there have been questionable coaching in many games. And then, there's things like the missed kick at Georgia and the three turnovers this last game.

See, this is what bothers me a little. I never said I was for a coaching change. In fact in one post I said it would be a bad thing. My whole point has been that my confidence that Josh will win anything significant here is waning. That doesn't mean I want him fired. If he leaves in the next 3 years it will be by his own choice. My expectations are really no different than yours. Like you mentioned mine are little more. That brings us to the question, are my expectations too high? Well, you tell me. I think with an expanded playoff we should be solidly in it most years. That means we are a top 15 team regularly. If we are not a top 15 team most years then we are not living up to what a program with the money, history, fanbase should be. I expect that with some regularity that the Vols are a solid playoff team hosting. Regularity? Every 3-4 years. I don't think just getting to the playoffs should be the ultimate barometer of success either. I expect to win some playoff games. I expect us to beat our rivals some. We've beaten Alabama and it seems to be a home and home type thing, at least for the moment although I think that could be trending differently. Similar with Florida but we haven't beaten the gators in Gainesville since many posters have been alive. Can we finally beat them this year? A team that recently fired their coach and lost one of their best players? I would hope so. And GA. I recognize GA has been a juggernaut but I expect to beat them on occasion. I expect to win against raked teams regardless of circumstances at least at a 50% clip. We've lost 5 straight against ranked teams. I guess our last chance this year will be Vandy giving that they will still be ranked in a few weeks. And lastly, I expect Josh to fire bad coaches and hire good ones. I said a few years ago Banks would get him fired if he kept him. That is still on the table.
Very reasonable and why I engage. We are each free to have whatever expectations we want. On things I can't control, I tend to just hope for the best instead of expect it. I want to compete and actually win a championship but just don't think it's realistic to expect it. I also think when things get this toxic, I just don't want to add to it. I am not saying you are toxic but I think you will agree that negativity has taken over this forum to the point that many of our better, long term posters are MIA or have just left all together. I have similar questions about Banks but our defense was elite last year and he had showed steady progress every year he had been here. This year has been extremely bad and is cause for concern but he has had a bunch of injuries to deal with. I would have expected better results regardless but don't know all the details. I do know that Heupel wants to win and I believe he is willing to make changes to compete at the highest level. The team certainly was on the doorstep of being a top 5 seed in the playoffs but at the end of the day weren't able to capitalize. Football is a fickle game and the close calls have made this year especially frustrating as we have numerous woulda, shoulda moments. That's also what makes it fun.

I've not argued for anything. In most cases I've simply asked questions. Questions that seem to bother people because they know the true answers but dont want to acknowledge them. I've said repeatedly that I'm not for firing Heupel. That doesn't mean I have confidence that he will ever be more than a 9-3 average year on year coach. That seems to be ok with a lot of posters, and that's fine.

As I've said many times, these are always financial decisions. As long as DW has people throwing money at him, he'll be here as long as he wants.
And what has this average 9-3 year on year coach’s record been the last 4 seasons?
