Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

Yes, yesterday sucked. However, I hate to inform you all but the days of teams going through the whole season without blemishes are going to very few and far between. Even with the elite schools. They’ve made conferences too deep and 8-4 9-3 seasons are going to happen quite often for a lot of good football teams. I can handle losing but right now I’m more concerned with how we’ve been losing. Heup or Halzle have been too cute with play calls in big situations this year, Heupel clock management has been awful, and yesterday Joey had his first true game to forget from a turnover standpoint.

All that said I still roll with my chances with Heup over starting over. I think this is the year Banks finally moves on. We have to keep stacking NIL and recruiting classes. Again, the way the SEC has expanded and the money that flows into these schools we can’t act like the sky is falling every year we go 9-3 8-4. It is going to happen.

What do you guys think about this theory?

Faulty premise. All the schools he mentioned were beyond accustomed to paying players pre-NIL.

I can’t believe he mentioned Arkansas as a school that didn’t pay its players illegally. They were in the SWC and were competitive; that didn’t happen without a lot of payola.

Have a good night. I see there's no point in debating you.
Who else you got? Brian Randolph? Evan Berry? Am I missing someone? Butch DBs were so terrible I tend to forget the personnel. Georgia fans hated Martinez as well, I spent a many years defending him against those guys on 247.

When Pruitt brought in Bryce Thompson and Alontae Taylor, they were the best corners we had signed in a looooong time. Still are if we’re being technical.

It's such a stark contrast reading the LSU 247 board and them discussing their coaching search and then the Florida board. They've discussed Kiffin and agreed he's probably not going to leave Ole Miss. Josh Heupel's name has come up and most LSU fans just don't see him leaving Knoxville.

But on the UF boards Kiffin is the only name being discussed and anyone who even dares to suggest Kiffin will not be the next head coach is downvoted and mocked into oblivion.

I even saw a guy sign up for that site a few weeks ago to follow the coaching search and then got harassed off the board for being an "Ole Miss fan" for having the gall to suggest Florida can't hire away Lane Kiffin!

I have to admit I've been surprised at a number of the jobs being former "destination jobs" not generating the interest they or even I expected.

I think Kiffin is unique in that he already held a good job, left for greener pastures and it didn't work. I think if he's got the resources he needs and is well paid he'll likely not be leaving, I didn't think that yet weeks ago.

It's going to be interesting what happens moving forward.

I get it takes some getting used to but pre-NIL CFB history has very little bearing on the current reality. You have to look at patterns to see where these schools stack up against each other. A lot of the old metrics we used to use are no longer useful due to NIL/Portal and the ridiculously inaccurate rankings for both from the recruiting websites.

Guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Everyone’s been paying kids for a long long time. And now only thing that matters there is who has more spendable dollars. What has happened in the past has little to no bearing on the future.

Theory debunked. By facts and logic.

We are spending the 3rd most on football of any school in the country. Those 2 teams aren't hiring coaches. We would match anything Heupel is offered unless Danny wants to make a change. That can't be ruled out, I guess. Would make little sense considering the class coming in.
I’m not convinced any of the various spending comparisons and rankings (no two say the same thing) are reliable.

Yeah, at first I thought he was onto something but after I posted this I started thinking about it.

We shouldn’t accept that, not when we’re supposedly the second highest spending SEC school. If you’re throwing around all that money, 10-2 should be the floor. 7-5 and 8-4 should never be acceptable.

In the SEC. God love ya but your setting yourself up for disappointment.

I've never said he should be fired. All I've said is my confidence in him is waning. I've also said 3 years ago that Banks would get him fired. I still believe that. While I think the probation has some influence, I think it's been exaggerated. The question is, is he a 7-5, 8-4, 9-3, occasional 10-2 or better perennial coach or more? We're at best 9-3 this year but most likely 8-4. If that's the norm for the next few years, should fans be satisfied?
Or two of the last 4 years would’ve been or should’ve been in the playoffs. Never said you said he should be fired. You can want confidence all you want but I’ll take being in the conversation for playoffs in November or in the playoffs 3 of last 4 years and this year was never thought to be by any of the quote experts to be a year we contended for anything. Does he need to grow and get better, yes. But so does everyone. Even you and I need to in our businesses. He is doing that but he could do some things he has not yet but he’s not flatline. No one wants 8-4 the next five years. Probabtion matters when you are recruiting without being able to communicate for weeks when others can. That is just as hard or harder than scholarship limits. I hated losing a game when we were the better team. That’s what I kept saying last night after the game and to my friends while eating at 1 am at the Waffle House. But I can’t remember the last time we played a rank team and lost where I felt that as strongly. I expect to win every game we played and live that feeling.

Agree with everything, almost. I think most would say top 10 team is the year over year goal and standard being set. Playoff appearances, seccg appearances, occasional sec champs, and of course the dream of a natty (or handful of them for the big dreamers). 9-3 with a 9 game sec schedule (and playoff expansion to 16) probably wouldn’t bother me as much. 4 losses is never gonna cut it.

Ga fans hated Willie as their DB coach and M Richt even made him a DC and they hated him more. I use to make fun of them during that time because the guy was bad and then Butch hired him and I pretended to act like I had no clue. But in Butchs defense, he had enough sense to fire Willie. I lived among Ga fans for almost 10 years and they was at the point to get rid of Willie they was ready to let MR go.

4 losses will not cut it but it will happen at some point. Maybe this year.
