Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

You're right but you heavily implied it. I can agree with new coordinators. Get someone Hurp trusts to call plays on O and get a new DC.
That’s right. He has to admit where he is weak and it’s his staff. We deserve a top 5 staff across the board have to have to be great. Margin of error will only get thinner in SEC, best staff and putting your talent in positions to win will be necessary.

We both agree that this season is disastrous to go on a head coach hunt

Beamer’s DC can come to the hill, the cocks defense is stout and they recruit some dawgs

Ranked 11th in ppg in SEC.

Ranked 11th in total ypg in SEC.

Ranked 13th in rush ypg in SEC.

In 24, worse than Vols in ypg, ppg, rush ypg, pass ypg.

In 23, 9th in ppg. Vols were 3rd. Worse than Vols in ypg, ppg, rush ypg, pass ypg.

should special teams coach be let go....TN has done nothing really special on special teams this year....two lost games to missed but makable field goals...?

@NathanWest

If Heupel wants a sacrificial lamb here’s a good place to start. Special teams have been d-----t across the board. Gilbert and Boo have regressed, none of our returners can field the ball. Dudes constantly let the ball roll instead of downing it costing us precious field position.

And nobody can tell me the SEC isn’t just as tough in Women’s hoops, Men’s Hoops, Softball and Baseball. Yet somehow some way they manage to attack the transfer portal and recruiting elite talent every year.

You'll have to define reasonable. Should fans be happy with 8,9 and occasional 10 win season? It appears that's what you get with Heup. He's not going anywhere this year. Lose to Vandy at home, seat gets warm. Next year with similar results, seat gets hot. I suspect we'll see the obligatory coaches moving on after the season, the sacrifices, the chance to right the ship. If I had to guess, he'll be here 3 more seasons.
We all have a different perspective of reasonable. I think if you are consistently in the playoff discussion you stay the course. I think what most people ignore in their fire the coach fit is can you replace him with a better coach? In most cases the answer is no. The more prudent approach would be to apply the resources you would spend to fire the coach on better players and assistants. Penn State could have taken the $50 million they are giving Franklin to leave and bought the best roster in college football history. I dont like him personally but the odds they get a more proven coach are remote. I just don’t make big decisions out of emotion as it’s usually not going to be the best option.

AP’s comments were essentially that we need to play the young guys we want a part of this team next year or else they may leave. Alluded to them being guys that haven’t play a lot so far.

I honestly thought of GMac with those comments
I think perlotte is a guy seeing the field (that doesn’t deserve to because he doesn’t quite know what he’s doing and makes boneheaded plays/penalties), because of this sentiment.

Brahme needs to see PT. Some OL need to see PT (this scares me). Some edge and DL. Maybe some DBs.

Personally, I don’t want us firing any damn coaches right now. Finish all the construction & then reevaluate upgrading staff afterwards.

Tony left, had to replace him. Unless Heupel chooses to leave don’t send a good coach recruiting well, competing in every game and putting fans in the seats packing. That’s beyond stupid. I do 100% think Hype can get over the hump if he brings in better assistants for his offensive staff.
You will keep falling further and further behind if you don’t upgrade now. Facilites, dark mode, uniforms don’t matter without playoff trips.

Margin of error will get razor thin over the next few years. Can’t afford weaknesses.

Over/Under

Heupel will be here 3 more seasons?
If Heup does not overhaul his coaching staff after this year,he might be looking for a new job next year. He has to grow a spine and make changes in order to have a chance. I really like Heup but he has yet to prove he is willing to change and make changes. There is a lot of good coaches that will be looking for a new job this year. There is a reason no schools are never trying to poach any of our coaches away. RG is the only one on the D side worth keeping.

Starting over fresh is a bigger risk than sticking put. Takes an incredible amount more effort to build from ground zero. He’s got a built in excuse with probation and I think the drive to be great. I’d be surprised if he even entertained a call. Gossip travels quick in Knoxville and I wouldn’t want that distraction in the locker room.
It's not a bigger risk if he senses that he's losing his grip here and that the upcoming schedules are so difficult he's almost certain to end up on the hot seat. Moving to a new job resets the clock. Especially if it's a team with a lot of NIL resources and a bad recent history. He can come in, nab a QB out of the portal, install his offense, and win 8-9 games year one and be a hero with a long leash. Not someone who peaked in year two and is trending down.

Also, he's not going to be taking the calls personally, lol. It would all be done via backchannels, and that kind of stuff doesn't get out unless someone wants it to get out. Usually the coach's own agent if he's fishing for a raise or the school/AD/boosters courting him who think they're close to a deal and are putting pressure on. He can "listen" without it ever remotely getting anywhere. But if the offer actually sounds good I wouldn't be totally shocked if he did indeed think about it.

That’s not factual. You often fall farther behind by making changes in an attempt to upgrade. After the season you analyze your entire staff and system and make appropriate changes. Everyone wanted to fire the receivers coach last year and this year they are the strength of the team. We have no idea who is the weakest link. Heupel wants to win and I trust him to do what’s necessary.

If you haven’t figured out that is what the new world is going to be, if you can be 8-10 wIn regular season you are going to be happy or in the constant state of chasing the greener grass.

UGA is 3 ref calls from missing the CFP in an expanded playoff. Alabama missed last year.

AND $ankey agreed to 9 game SEC schedule next year without an expanded playoff. Just Dumb.

A lot of Tennessee fans better reset their expectations or UT is going back to the desert.

Yes, you have to know the weaknesses. No you are wrong that the coach has to k ow and execute. His issue is willingness to execute.

The receiver coach was not the problem last year, it was clearly Nico and super conservative play calling in SEC play. Joey can sling it, albeit sometimes to OU’s safety.

We do have clear weaknesses on O Line, Secondary, DC, Special teams, and maybe OC. Also I would suggest an upgrade at S&C is warranted.

You have to be willing to go out and upgrade. If not, you will fall behind. Notice I said upgrade.

We are barely beat MS St and Arky…we don’t get that soft schedule next year. We lacked competitiveness on the LOS as the game went on last night.

I do agree that 9 wins going forward will be the new 10. Will look more like NFL.

Look around the league and coaches who really suck are being fired and they are not on course for 8-4.
IMO you have to compare programs who are committing top 10-15 resources and look accordingly. Of those, Kelly and Franklin were both fired. Florida you could argue and yes agree Napier just sucked and should’ve been canned last year.
