So who COULD we get if not Heupel?

I believe Lane is in the cat bird seat for openings. However, it’s seems he looses one game a year he should win. Is this a vast improvement?

Maybe the answer is not hire another head coach, maybe we need to hire a full time talent evaluator to constantly evaluate the portal and bring in the best available. It’s not like the NFL, no salary cap.

For some reason I have the feeling that James Franklin may be the most attractive on the market simply because I believe he is butt hurt by the firing and this has added a level of fire in the gut to prove he is a national champion coach. He may do really well at his next stop. I hope it’s not UF.

My thought process is that, the day Nico walked out the door and went back to California, most reasonable people would have projected us 6-3 at this point in the season, and that's exactly where we are. Like it or not, the fortunes of the 2025 Vol season always rose and fell on whether Nico would develop into the player he had the potential to be. If he did, we would have a higher ceiling. Since he hasn't and isn't even here anymore, we have a lower one this year. Honestly, if we beat either Florida or Vandy and finish 8-4, it won't be a bad year. Beat both and it's a good year, considering the situation we were put in by the I Am A Leava family.

Heupel stays. We need an ELITE defensive coordinator. One that when it’s 3rd and long I know they aren’t converting. I think would also look at doing something with Halzle. I don’t know how much of the offense is called by CJH but whatever influence he is getting from his staff doesn’t seem to be working. At this point Heupel needs to worry about keeping this incoming class intact and building the defense.

If we are having to rely on the defense next year that means we don’t know what we have at QB. If only there were QB’s on the roster that have many years of eligibility left that can get some live game experience this year since the season is meaningfully over.

No way we get on the coaching carousel. The way we let Fulmer go sent us into the basement for 10+ years. Heupel has us as a top 25 team and we have a lot of youth and injuries this year. Our All American CB's being out changed our defense, albeit I'm not a fan of our DC. We should be better next year.

I like Heupel, but sadly his loyalty to his buddies is hurting us. Halzle, Martinez and Possibly Banks need to be replaced and then see where we are. That said; do however question CJH's lack of calling for challenges of suspect /bad calls, getting in the officials @ss for bunk flags and his apparent confusion with clock management

Yeah Huep should not be fired.

We need to:

1. Make staff coaching changes.
2. RAID THE PORTAL AND OVERHAUL THE DEFENSE.
3. Hire quality defensive staff.

That’s it.
This is the answer, plain and simple. No alteration needed. Martinez got to go for sure. I know his hands were tied by injuries and I do think Redmond has gotten better, but the corners (and safeties) have been a liability. Hire a defensive backs coach with a record of producing quality NFL ready players and let Banks focus on the defensive scheme.

If you look at what happened across college games yesterday : Miami lost, Georgia St lost, Vandy lost, Clemson lost and I can guarantee their fans are all saying the same thing about their coach " we need to start looking elsewhere" . Just look at all the openings for a HC in college football today. I don't like losing either, but until we have a sure fire good coach willing to step in , I'd say stay the course, maybe changes in defense coaches, and hope the portal can turn things around.

I agree with this - good post. But the other side is . . . If he loses to Vandy and Florida and ends up at 7-5 . . . It’s a sub par season. I hope to be wrong . . . But watching this team leads me to that conclusion.

Regardless, he will be and should be our coach 2 more years.

I agree Josh should not be fired. If we are all honest with ourselves he was forced to take a turnover prone QB in the spring portal, and up until last night has done a good job with him. I thought after Nico left the way he did this was an 8 win team but after JA had the hot start I started thinking maybe we could get to 10 wins so I understand the let down.

after sleeping on it. And after sleeping on it after the UGA game, it still sucks that we should have won both games and be sitting here with one loss and a closer game to Bama vs what the score showed,

Nevertheless, I don’t want JH canned.

For those who do, who are you going to realistically hire?

I would not be surprised if Auburn cans Freeze this week. If so, you will have LSU, UF, Auburn open. Add in Arkansas and possibly UK, along with Va Tech. Will Dabo be out as well? Seems like he is begging to be fired.

Do you seriously think that we could hire someone better than JH with all the openings? If so, who?

Are we more attractive than LSU, UF and Auburn currently? All three have won nattys and SEC championships since we last did so some 27 years ago.

To my knowledge, there is not a Phil Fulmer or Johnny Majors waiting in the wings to come home.
Most fans are very casual fans on Saturdays and just love to be a part of the game day, nothing wrong with that. The new fan in this era will want to fire any coach that gets knocked out of the playoffs (Bowl games are meaningless) so until they change the playoffs to 16 teams just 12 coaches will be safe yearly. All these fans have grown up in a world where everybody gets a trophy, so there can be no losers and if they are changes need to be made, Dam the millions of $$s. Just the new normal. Rinse and repeat.

Banks has to go. He is the worst value coordinator in the nation.

I agree, if I had to list my dislikes about Josh is his loyalty to coaches that are not getting the job done, and he seems to be lacking in game prep...the teams don't seem ready to play the big games. Maybe he's not a motivational speaker ? For a reference, look at the games Georgia has won this year by coming from behind including beating us.

Nobody is likely going undefeated. They question is can he make us more sound and better overall.

I totally understand the frustration. But the guy is trying to make chicken salad out of chicken crap and sometimes that’s more challenging than others. Maybe he’ll get a job this offseason and leave, but I feel like he’ll get the John Jancek treatment when he leaves, ie, his replacement will be a huge downgrade and our defense will be EVEN WORSE and we’ll all be left saying he was the best thing since sliced bread. I think this year was an issue of inexperienced personnel, not bad scheme.

Gee, let’s not spy Mateer again here. Oops he ran it for a mile on third and super long again.

Our defense for 3 straight weeks has played well enough to win comfortably. Our offense has laid duds and given the other team multiple scores that negated the defense’s play.

Literally, our offense just had to play average.

The problem with this whole situation is Nico leaving actually improved our situation, we just didn’t know it then. With that said it makes that whole argument irrelevant. JA has been an upgrade, although last night was a terrible game for him.

Had Nico stayed there’s a good chance we have 2 less wins right now. How would you feel about Heup if we were a 4-5 team right now?
