Tennessee is 97th in the country in defensive stop rate. Ohio State is #1.

While I'll agree our D has been slightly worse than I'd have hoped. We have had our fair share of negative plays, and we've been good on the turnovers. I would hope, that if we continue to trend in the right direction with negative plays, then some 3rd down stops will happen. Our absolute biggest weakness is zone, which against good receivers, is tough cause it's hard to man up against an Alabama or a Georgia all night when you're playing you're 3, 4th and 5th cb's. Our zone coverage has to get better the last part of the season, and I believe if it does, we will have a decent defense (top 40?). Time after time, which to atleast some degree is flukey, we have blown a coverage or missed a tackle on a big 3rd down.

Who has time to look at offensive opponents rankings? Ours vs theirs

OSU: Texas(78th), Ohio(33rd), Washington(29th), Minnesota(124th), Illinois(76th), Wisconsin(135th). Average: 76.1

Tennessee: Syracuse(63), Georgia(37), UAB(47th), Miss State(53rd), Arkansas(7th), Alabama(54th), Kentucky(93rd), Average: 50.5

Rankings are total offensive yards per game.

Removing ETSU from Tennessee and Grambling State from OSU since they're both FCS.

who cares....ill stack our offense against any team in the nation.

This. Our defense just needs to get one or two stops or force a turnover. I’m cool with 45-40 games as long as we have the higher number on the scoreboard. A win is a win.

I also might add that in 2022 our defense finished 109th in the nation giving up around 452 yards of offense per game. We have injuries and depth issues for sure, but a lot of this is a byproduct of Heupel’s offense running successfully. When you give the opposition more possessions because your own offense scores so quickly, this tends to happen.

Get a few three and outs on defense, and those extra possessions stop being an excuse for having the #97 defensive stop rate in the nation.

Because the stop rate will then be much better.

We have had plenty of folks say how bad our D is, why does somebody feel compelled to start another one? Misery loves misery I guess. We’re 6-2 and all we can do is take care of business this weekend and the every weekend from here on out. If we take care of business that will be the only stat that counts. GBO!!!!

I have said it before and I will say it again now, Coach Heupel needs to stop hiring offensive analysts and start hiring defensive analysts…..a truck load of defensive analysts particularly if Coach Heupel plans on keeping his current defensive staff intact!
I’d say keep the offensive analysts. They seem to be doing pretty well.

It's easy to "improve their historical norm" when you cancel all P4 OOC games for a decade, and then beat a bunch of terrible teams.

The only difference between Indiana's record now and in 2019-2020 is they don't play the top Big Ten teams every season and they don't get beat to teams by 40

Hell even Iowa almost beat them this season and they barely can register a first down.

Other than a coaching malpractice job by Lanning, Indiana has yet to beat ONE team they haven't been favored by.

“Other than that road win against a top ten team, which is more impressive than any of our wins, what has Indiana done? They only beat two of the top four teams in the conference! Not impressed!” Your argument doesn’t hold water.

Worth noting that Syracuse was one of the best passing offenses until Angeli got hurt. They haven't been the same since.

I bet they have a hard time staying #1 this weekend against the offensive juggernaut that is Penn St. It really is crazy how they’re able to be so dominant week in and week out . Then they get Purdue, UCLA and Rutgers. No weeks off in the B1G. Or is it no weeks on?
The perpetual conundrum with OSU. You never know if they're a pretender or the Green Bay Packers lite until the postseason.

Honestly it's gotta be maddening for those fans, a whole buncha basically meaningless games and then Michigan. Hence why they get so bent out of shape when they lose that one.

I’m going to defend Indiana a little this season. Yes, they play a soft schedule but they have a blue chip ratio of 8%. TN’s is 53% by comparison. For Indiana, doing more with less is an understatement. They beat Oregon with a 67% blue chip ratio. They are mauling teams. Look at Vandy with a 6% blue chip ratio. Coaching and a team with experience matters.

Conversely, there are teams that are greatly underachieving.

Imagine UT playing a schedule like Indiana five years in a row and then claiming your team and HC is the best in the country:

FIU (4-8)
Western Illinois (FCS)
at UCLA (5-7)
Charlotte (5-7)
Maryland (4-8)
at Northwestern (4-8)
Nebraska (7-6)
Washington (6-7)
at Michigan State (5-7)
Michigan (8-5)
at Ohio State (14-2)
Purdue (1-11)

Old Dominion (5-3)
Kennesaw State (6-2)
Indiana State (FCS)
Illinois (5-3)
at Iowa (6-2)
at Oregon (7-1)
Michigan State (3-5)
UCLA (3-5)
at Maryland (4-3)
at Penn State (3-4)
Wisconsin (2-6)
at Purdue (2-6)
Indiana might not win the national championship but they would have stomped Miss St and Ark while we didn’t. Their coach is beating more talented teams every week. Lets not discount that.
