Game Thread: Lady Vols v Columbus state, Home, Wed., 6:30PM, "SECN+"(stream) (exhibition game)

“…crowd of 10,159 on Wednesday night…”

LOL yeah. They really gotta stop with that. I thought their attendance was fine for a weeknight exhibition game against Columbus State. No need to fluff. If anything it draws more attention to the disparity.

I just got back home from the game and wanted to report that even though it was a yucky, rainy, unusually cool night, it was a decent crowd at the FCC tonight. Maybe not in huge numbers, but the crowd seemed to enjoy being there and were supportive of the team.

And I'll add that the pep band was super strong, as usual. I sat there amazed at the volume and clarity they achieve, sounding like a much bigger band than they are. Also, there had to be at least 20 cheer team members, and they worked hard.

The game itself was close to what I expected, but the newbies were actually better than expected this early.

Like Kim said, there's plenty to work on, but I feel confident this group will handle the work like pros.

The Columbus State players were scrappy and quick and really can hold their heads high.

The season is officially here, and I couldn't be more excited to see what happens when we face NCST.

My first game at TBA with the arena upgrades. The scoreboard is real nice. The resolution is greatly improved so it's easy to see what's being displayed. Also the information (game stats) displayed on the monitors between the lower and upper levels now has a lot of relevant game info. There was always some info there but now it's comprehensive. NICE!

I like those new seats. The distance between my knees and the seat back in front of me decreased by what seemed to be an inch or two but that's no biggie (for me).

The wi-fi worked but was just a bit sluggish. I got around 8 mb bandwidth once it woke up which is not bad. I have an iPhone 13 that might be part of the slowness.

As far as the game is concerned.....I thought CS handled the press better than I thought they would. They had a lot of turnovers/steals and it would have been much worse had they not made some spiffy plays to get the ball in front court. Our defense is going to give teams fits. We are quicker and doing a better job pressing without fouling. The pressure never relented all night.....not for one minute although that is not meant to infer that everyone knew what they were doing all the time.

We rebounded over them all night. We will be a better rebounding team inside. The refs were allowing some pretty aggressive clear-out's and everyone was fouling on put-backs. We lost some really good rebounding guards from last season so I don't know if we will be as effective with outside rebounding. We will need to be. Janiah played stronger at both ends than I expected. Both Ruby and Talaysia were fluid all night. Deep.....very deep at guard. Jersey has nice touch but goes a little weak at times trying to draw a foul. Still, she's going to be a major contributor.

Pretty nice to win by a hundred when Zee was off all night. The twins will make a difference. Nice to see Kaiya back out there. She's developed her body while out.

+/- says Janiah, Zee, Nya, Ruby, Talaysia, Jersey, and Mia kicked tail.

Need to be better at foul shooting.

Prawl is going to be a stat sheet stuffer by doing a little or a lot of everything.... The twins probably end up as my favorites, like I said I get ZZ vibes from those two. Barker will strive in this offense and Robertson is a very skilled offensive player.

Like I said the product isn't complete but if this team keeps on the upward projection, then I wouldn't want to see the ladies in February and March if I'm another team...this team can be that damn good....

No question ! If this team is lucky enough to have the top 8 players by the end of the dance they will probably be dancing in the finals. I know they weren't playing a formetable opponent but you can see the skills at all possions.

I watched so I'll go ahead and answer yes . Coach Barnes played everyone to see how they fit into his system. Don't know the minutes but Duke's best plays rarely came off the court.
The Arena had plenty of NBA Scouts in the building. Duke wanted to showcase Boozer's talents and they most certainly did. Top 2 pick in NBA draft ...

Duke's fab freshman, Boozer, got 39 minutes, I believe. Yes, that's the way Coach Barnes goes about exhibition games. I would prefer the Lady Vols play a little stiffer competition.

NCAA keeps track of attendance by tickets sold, not wicket counts across all sports, so they are just reporting that. There have been schools or particular sports that used to give both, but it has been years since I have seen thisTthe announced attendance for this game told me that they likely sold almost 10000 more season tickets this year, as single tickets bought for exhibition games are almost nil and it was a significantly bigger figure than last year's exhibition attendance.

Thought they would break a 100 but 148. As expected Kim was not that impressed, ha.

On if they got the basket as much as she wanted

“Our offense wasn’t great. It really wasn’t. It didn’t look like anything we’d practiced. I think we need to put pressure on the rim and look to play inside out from there. And we’re still having a hard time discerning the difference between what the defense gives us and what we kind of create. And so, I need to go back and look at the film. I didn’t think we took very many bad threes tonight. I think a lot of our threes were assisted threes. I do have to look at that number. I think we should’ve gotten to the rim more against this opponent.”

Also with all this talent on this years team, Cooper shouldn't have to press and let her game flow freely. The twins and Robertson should handle the ball coming up the court and let Coop cook as a 2 guard or a stretch 3...
Coop caused a lot of chaos as CS brought the ball up. She’s sneaky and quicker than they think.

What do you mean only? There are 4 (10) minute quarters in a women’s basketball game. 7 players scored in double figures and 13 players scored in the game.
I figure everyone played by the end of the 1st quarter and after that it was based on the production on the floor in this game.

Our family got the mini-plan last year - 6 tickets for $60. That deal was not offered this year; there was a steep jump this year except for this game. Other single game tickets start at $16. This one was considerably cheaper but not so when they announced there would be no shuttle.

If the stated reason (construction) for not running the shuttle is the true reason, there won't be a shuttle for upcoming games either.

They were offering free parking in G10 though, which I imagine is more convenient for most.

Hurst only got 4 mins in a rout and Boyd 5 ?
Yes, Lauren didn't get all that many minutes and the few she got she unfortunately made some less than optimal decisions. She's developing and will be a fine player but there is a lot of talent in front of her. Kaniya got a little over 5 minutes and I don't remember her contributions. There were a lot of plays/action and 11 players had double digit minutes. I expect Kim is a long way away from settling on her top 10 but needed something like this to boost player and team confidence before the away contest with NCSU. 67-33 rebounding, 29-9 assists, 45-18 turnovers and 30-13 steals pretty much explains the score. 3 point shooting was better than expected.

Tennessee has the deepest team in WBB. By the end of the 1st qtr, all 14 players were substituted in the game. That will happen multiple times this season.
Tennessee’s 5th PG on the depth chart (all capable of playing the position at a high level) is better than some P5 schools 1st and 2nd string PG.

I didn't think either played very well...nor Wynn to be honest.
