The Atlanta Braves

Gotta think Heup is still the guy pulling the trigger. For the most part, we've gotten back to a 2022-esque level of creativity with the offense, and I think that's because Heup has a QB he trusts again.

Golesh is undoubtedly a good offensive coach but I think his impact on the offense might have been overstated.

They were talking about it during the UK game broadcast. Teams adjusted to our offense after 2022 and started playing 2 deep safeties a lot more and a lot more zone to take away the chunk plays. Our solution to that was to run the ball more. Part of it I'm sure had to do with QBs who had trouble completing passes past 20 yards. We adjusted back this season, partly because we have a QB who complete those passes and partly because our RB group is the weakest it's been in Heup's tenure. I guess technically we have more depth than a year ago, but no one is remotely close to Sampson's level.

OP is smarter than me about football and has way more inside knowledge about the football program. But I'm with you Wick. I think there are deficiencies but in today's new age, I'm not sure any team outside Ohio State can say they are elite at every position with talent. We definitely have to get better in the LB room (and with Perlotte/Harmon, there seems to be progress) and at safety but Vols are literally two plays from beating a top 5 Georgia team and at the very least, giving Bama a real scare on the road.
It’s kind of a results vs process thing. The result was almost there but the process to achieve the desired result isn’t good enough to achieve the desired result consistently. If we play Bama and Georgia ten times, they are winning 8.

We need a game breaker on offense. All the top teams have a couple dudes that can bust you.
We’ve gotta get better at LB and S. We get picked on. Scheming our defense isn’t very hard. 30% of our starters can’t play at a championship level.

The talent level has gotten much better. We are good enough that on any given Saturday we can be competitive with anyone. We are not good enough that on every Saturday we are competitive with anyone.

We also have an offensive wizard running the show. For all his flaws, how many people can create the offenses he does? Not many.

Would Brazzell qualify as that? I know he's leading the SEC in receiving yards during conference games, but honestly it seems like we don't target him enough. Has anybody shown that they can consistently cover him?

LB and S are horrible, yes.

Brazzell is very good. Can win 1v1. Great ball skills. I believe he would start everywhere in the conference.

Did it ever feel like we didn’t target Hyatt enough? The thing that made it different was even though everyone on the planet knew 11 was going to get deep, you couldn’t stop him. The only defense was to get 5 on the ground before we could fire.

You can contain 17 by shading over the top. You just wanna take the splashes away as best you can. You’re not worried about 10-12 yard receptions and YAC. And since 4 can’t catch it’s easy to shade over the top and help on 17.

But yeah he’s the closest we have to a freakazoid. He’s very good.

I don't remember feeling like we didn't target Hyatt enough; maybe I did but I don't recall long periods of time in games where HH had time to throw and we didn't try to hit him on a deep ball.

I don't think we look to Brazzell enough in particular down on the goal line. I could be forgetting others, but I recall only two "go up and get it" targets for him around the goal line this year, and he got both - one against UAB and another against Miss St. Against Arky, it's like we forgot he was on the field.

I really don't agree that we lose to UGA or Bama 8/10 times with this unit. This offense is the best we've had under Heup when you factor position by position and depth (particularly at OL).

We have playmakers. Our starting WR unit is best in the SEC and is arguably only behind OSU nationally. Matthews has dropped a few but he's still a dog and he's gonna end up with about 900 receiving yards before any bowl games. If anything, the RB group is a tad bit underwhelming. Not bad, but not what we've had in the past.

Yes the defense sucks. I think it's exaggerated a bit on how much they suck, but they are clearly a bottom third unit in the country.

Absolutely agree. Always been Heupel. Stand alone, Golesh is really good too.

Such an incredibly odd defense. I don’t ever remember a defense with such big play capabilities, that struggles at literally everything else. It’s a weird discrepancy.

I'm not surprised they suck insofar as we haven't had McCoy all year and Gibson for 98% of the year.

What is more surprising is how guys who were here last year as well over-pursue and take bad angles. I love the sacks that the D-line is getting, but they pretty often get out of run fits. They aren't gap sound even though all of these guys played last year with all the rotating they do.

Always going to wonder what it would have looked like if we fielded a healthy McCoy, Gibson and Hood.

There is a world that's not crazy where this secondary is elite. Jermod never tears his ACL. Gibson doesn't tear his pec. Carter doesn't ghost the program for 4 months. McCoy gets hurt so you can't move Hood to STAR (which I think was the original plan). Boo ghosts the program all summer, so you can't move McMurray to safety.

CB- McCoy
CB- Gibson
STAR- Hood
S- Engaged Boo
S- McMurray

Looks A LOT LOT BETTER
