Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

Always take OL/DL if they're good fits.

DB I say you focus on keeping Hood, Redmond, & Gibson all the rest get too demanding you show them the door. I'd probably have a car waiting for Boo after our last game.

WR room honestly knowing it's really year 2 we see results I agree ya only take a big time player. Travis Smith Jr, Matthews, Radarious, Staley, Jefferson, Dodson all young guys that we should focus on returning for next year. Plus incoming talent.

Curious to see how LB room works out...Carter & Telander are both just juniors. I fully expected Carter would have a good season and leave for draft, with the turf toe injuries though he may decide to come back for his senior season. Worry is younger guys wanting to play and hitting the portal. Bolton is a RS Junior though, might be able to convince him to graduate and transfer down for his final year somewhere else where he can be a starter full time. Cannot let Perlotte, Spillman, or Harmon portal imo.
Hood is gone unless something weird happens to affect his draft stock. Gibson will be back and we'll all be grateful. Could always add a portal DB, because we got Willie Dang Martinez and he'll identify a guy in the portal that will be a bargain and play like a 1st round CB.

Thanks for the response, I really don't disagree with much of anything here.

The worst attribute of our defense is, far and away, performance on 3rd down. Honestly, I think we'll see that get better over time and we're suffering from some inexperience and luck.

The cons you mention are real. My point is that those cons reduce what could be a great defense (top 10) to merely a good defense (top 30). Where relying on the eye test alone (or traditional stats) make us look like a horrible defense.

I'll only add that the expected value of a turnover is generally accepted to be in the 3.5-4 points range. It doesn't assume that every drive would have resulted in a FG+. What it assumes is that the instant change in field position generally results in an immediate swing of 3.5-4 expected point differential on average.

Also enjoy your stat dives.

To me the biggest annoyance with Banks is personnel. He is the DC and Safeties coach, he stirs the pot. We know DW has the budget there...we know our NIL is as good as any in the country for all the major sports and the secondary group as a whole is just lacking high rated talent. If you had actual 4 and 5 stars playing those positions then the defense Banks tries to run would be working better. We saw a glimpse last year, Will Brooks and McCoy were out there snagging passes all season and Brooks wasn't a high rated talent, he just worked his tale off and figured out how to put himself in the best spots most the time.

Agree, but I'll throw out that I worked on PPG impacts of various position groups last year, and safeties were the least valuable position group, in terms of points added per (estimated) dollar spent.

I don't have the numbers with me off hand, but if I remember correctly it went: EDGE > DL > CB > LB > S. An elite EDGE / DL was typically worth twice as many points added as an elite safety.

I still think we need to be better back there, but the staff's recruiting philosophy does seem to stick pretty closely to the above heirarchy.

Oh damn...didn't realize Hood was in his 3rd year. I think you're right, he gone.

Willie does a lot better at finding portal DBs than he has HS talent (so far).

Turnage, Hadden, Jeudy-Lally, McCoy, Hood....so far Gibson has probably been his best recruit from HS and it's been a small sample size with the injury.

I don't know about that. He's got a long history of being really skilled at identifying guys in HS. Built his reputation on putting those guys in the league. Probably don't need to list them all.

Makes sense, and based on recruiting (other than CB/LB being flipped) it seems that's been how we've recruited.

The issue is you don't have to go pay the highest level Safety talent from portal or HS...if you can develop them. But we for sure need to see better recruiting there. Not every 3 star is a 3 star, figure out how to identify the missed 4/5 stars and develop them above their rating. At this point we can all agree that Will Brooks has been the only success from the Safeties (including STAR) in Banks' time here.

Not counting those guys they inherited from previous staff.

I want you to list the HS recruits for Willie that he's brought here in the Hype era that either made the league OR are still on roster.

I've already looked into it...been a tougher stretch this go round.

Portal should be crazy for us this year. My guess:

1 QB (depth)
1 WR (only if big time player)
1 RB
1-3 OL (depending on transfers)

5-6 DB
1 LB
3-4 DL

I think we see a lot of DB transfers that aren’t playing plus just players leaving for nfl or graduation.
You think our DBs transfer? Most are freshmen. Not convinced they'll leave over playing time just yet. I could see Boo leaving. At times, it looks like he's already left. Maybe Beasley. I could see him wanting a fresh start somewhere else. But as far as transferring, what other DBs do you think would actually transfer? Not much you can do about NFL/graduation.

Rococo Becht, Luke Altmeyer, Steve Angeli, Avery Johnson, etc. . .

Is it fair to say we are all idiots and Heupel knew what he was doing going with Aguilar over "the list"?
I’d say it’s fair to say his choice was very limited and not all them were coming here if he wanted them.

I’d say if things went as planned we’d still have Nico missing open receivers down field.

Who cares, it worked out well!!

Boo (definitely transferring)
McMurray (graduation)
McCoy (draft)
Beasley (replaced moved down depth chart)
Merritt (not playing could develop but many just leave if not playing quick)
Stewart (git)
Brazzel (git)
Lewis (git)

Obviously it's a weird spot...cause we gotta win 4 more to be in the playoffs, but also if you have McCoy and Hood both near 100% FOR the playoffs....we could suddenly be a very real dark horse.
Absolutely have to win this weekend! Hope Hood can go. Our playoff chances probably go up astronomically if we win and then get Hood, McCoy, and Carter back fairly healthy for Florida and Vandy. Hope we have a playoff spot to play for still for those 2 games.

Serious question. Since G-league players with eligibility can play college basketball. Can Canadian league and practice squad players in the NFL play college football (if they have eligibility)?
It's coming----the NCAA is so scared of lawsuits now and they have effectively been neutered. Just last week they changed the rules on gambling. Once that door is opened, everything with college sports is up for grabs.

Conferences are now just simi-pro leagues.

The NBA is a joke. The officiating or lack thereof is udderly pathetic. I remember when walking/traveling was called multiple times per game and now, even in Jr. High, HS and college it's rarely called. James Naismith would not recognize the sport today.
When is the last time you saw the "3 second" rule called. Guys camp out in the lane now and just beat up on each other.
