Recruiting Forum Football Talk IX

Joey Aguilar is on pace for the following season (edited as original was based on 6 remaining games which I hope happens):

3809 yards passing, 29 TD, 10 Int, sacked 13 times. 148 yards rushing, 3 TD's.

That would be top three all time in Tennessee football history. The only arguments could be 2022 Hendon and 1997 Peyton.
Leave him in for the entire NMST game and it's even better. We should seriously pad his stats that day..We are playing for the committee! 😆

whats crazy is Mike has prob left another 100-150 yards on the field in drops this yr and thats being generous
If he hits the juggs machine like Hyatt entered final season, he could set every Tennessee record. We could have our Chase/Jefferson combo with he and Staley.

Perlotte is not elite? Dye, Campbell, Utley don’t flash? I think they are all studs and just need more time and a year in strength program.

Walton doesn’t flash? Looks to me like he just wasn’t coached up and doesn’t know his role well. But he tackles pretty decently.

Most of the 300+ yards this weekend were fro. YAC. Why is our tackling so horrid? We’ve had double digit missed tackles six games straight. That’s not a talent issue, that’s a coaching and effort issue.

Garner and Martinez likely retire after this year. It would be the year to switch some things up. And I think we will.
That lack of talent and making business decisions is a sign of young inexperienced players as well. Yes, some have flashed, but are inconsistent and sometimes lost.

You may be right about those two coaches, but I disagree about it being a good year to shake things up, I think at best we are getting 3rd or 4th choice at best of candidates, likely worse than that. I think this is a horrible year to be assistant coach hunting because of the amount of slots needing filled. Last year was the year. Maybe next year is the right window.

For what it's worth I'm not even really defending Banks, and I'm not partial to keeping him. If we move on I want to make sure we actually upgrade instead of bargain hunting for the best guy we can get because the better 5 or 6 options available are taking jobs elsewhere.

One of those preseason SEC media polls had Joey ranked 15 out of 16 SEC quarterbacks

What really annoys me, Nico got a lot of Heisman buzz last season...it pretty much didn't stop until Georgia game. And if you look at what his numbers were through the first 8 weeks...

136 of 208 for 65.4% with 1705 passing yards 9 TDs and 4 INTs with 60 rushes for 193 yards and 1 TD

Why was Nico getting the hype from outside media while doing nothing, but Joey who is balling isn't getting any?

VolQuest’s Austin Price joined 104.5 on Tuesday and he shared the latest update on Carter ahead of the Oklahoma game.

“I still will be shocked if he plays this week against Oklahoma, but maybe he guts through it,” said Price when asked about Carter. “He was gutting through it the previous few games.

According to Price, Hood is dealing with a pulled muscle in his calf.

“As for Colton Hood, he’s got a pulled muscle in his calf,” said Price. “He will continue to rehab all week and see if he can be able to be a go for Saturday night.”

If talent was our primary problem, we'd be average, not last in the SEC.

The entire second and third level looking at the sideline pre-snap: 🤷🤷🤷.

That's not a talent problem.

Someone mentioned DJ Durkin. I promise if DJ Durkin was our DC, we wouldn't have missed assignments on literally every single play.

This binary thinking that Banks can't get the blame until we have the full 85 Bears back there who are all seniors and can run the defensive calls blindfolded.... It's bizarre. A bizarre standard no one else would ever be held to.

On point number two, that's not my position at all.

How sought after do you think Durkin will be? As a coach on a team having some uncertainty do you think he's going to be looking around? Which brings me to my next point with so many coaches looking fill out staffs how many other programs will likely be looking to add him?

If you asked me tomorrow if I'd swap, my answer is yes. But until you have a fish lined up you don't cull what you got. And I'm not sure Durkin will be available to us this off-season.

I hear ya! I actually think we found something with Spillman and Perlotte. And they are young. They flashed. It was obvious on highlights how lost Telander is. I would give those two 75% of the snaps if Carter can’t go. And the rest 25%. We get three weeks off essentially before florida. Got to dig deep and just win.

Can't wait to run the table and piss everyone off that we made the playoff again.

We could very easily be undefeated with A&M's schedule.

Yeah I get the "who have we beaten" but like the reply is everyone except 2 top 5 teams with one being on the road...

The good news OU and Vandy are quality wins if we can get them...both are at home. And we have a bye after OU with New Mexico State the week after...we win Saturday night and I like our chances in those final 2 SEC games.

it is pretty wild that we are experiencing one of the best WR units in the history of our program this year (could end up the best) and it was this board's #1 worry going into the season

Shows me 2 things.

1. talent is talent is talent
2. elevated QB play is a must to showcase how good your WR room talent actually is

Also, all 3 of our top WRs are in year 2...so it's pretty clear this system requires a year in it before you really can showcase what you're capable of.

Teelander issue is speed and slow to diagnose. The two you mentioned are both faster, but Perlotte was out of position or failed to fill gaps, he's not getting to the holes in the run game but neither was Teelander.

Why I said I’m not actually concerned about linebacker next year. So much talent and many getting reps now. And the class coming in has studs.

I think Campbell, Dye, and utley will be monsters next year too, Freshmen class and this years class is elite. Talented team next year no doubt. Use portal for needs and go win.
incoming talent? fire Inge

Seriously though, this is why I've never been in that camp, despite how our LBs play. He wasn't exactly left with the best players. The dudes he recruited are stellar though.

QB play will take a step back next year unfortunately. No slight to either of the 2 QBs going for the job, but they won't be as good as Joey, so I don't think any records will be set.

Also...maybe I'm just seeing things with orange tinted glasses

I think our LBs are fine. Carter playing through injury was part of the issues we were seeing. We have studs with a lack of experience behind him, get them on the field and see what they can do.

Spillman was all over the field against Kentucky and is now 2nd on the team in total tackles.
Perlotte is all gas, great speed and a nose for the ball. The more he plays the better he is going to get.
Harmon is a bit behind those 2 but still shows up on the film when he's playing.

Our secondary is the biggest problem...for a few reasons

1. development, Banks is the Safeties coach...Willie the CBs and neither has developed anyone they've recruited out of HS yet
2. recruiting, year 5 and we still haven't seen any big time recruits in the secondary brought in. Poteat is fringe 3/4, Redmond a 3 star Boo & Beasley low 4 stars and because of no development neither really showing much yet. Not sure why they can't land better HS talent in secondary...they've been able to pull 'em from the portal.
3. injuries/depth, willing to let lots of guys walk...and it's happened a few times. 2025 class we saw 5 secondary players leave, 2024 class we saw 8 secondary players leave...we're not reloading in the portal (with enough talent) and we're not reloading with HS talent...
