The first Poltergeist movie where the guy in the bathroom pukes and then rips his flesh from his face piece by piece was a bit much for me at 5 years old too

I really like Aster as well. I think my current favorites are Aster, Robert Eggers, Mike Flanagan, Ti West, and even David Sandberg is doing some cool stuff. Sandberg has a YouTube channel called “ponysmasher” where he gives a ton of behind the scenes views and a lot of short films.

Edit to add a few years ago I would’ve thrown James Wan into the mix, but he seems to have fizzled out into a producer role.

I just watched Train for Busan, it may be my new favorite zombie movie. If you’re into zombie movies and can handle foreign films with subtitles, I highly recommend it!

I'm sorry, but what???

I was about 7 or 8 when I caught the scene where they stab the demon kid in the eye. I had nightmares for weeks after that.

I saw Jaws well before that and was fine. You only see the actual shark for a total of like 2-3 minutes in the movie. The rest of it is just suspense, which is what makes it such a great movie. I suppose Quint getting bit was a bit much, but in terms of gory horror movies it's very tame.

That brings up something brought up before in these kind of threads. Like what people find "funny" can vary wildly what different people find "scary" does the same. I just pulled up a list titled Best Gateway Horror Movies for Newbies and The Gate was #11 between Gremlins and Critters.

I'm with a lot of people in that much of the far out horror doesn't get me as much as "real" scary stuff. (Doesn't mean I can't enjoy a lot of it though.) Shark attacks are 100% real and Jaws got in my head in a way demons, etc never could.

Dog Soldiers is one of the best and most underrated Werewolf movies out there. It is my favorite and the werewolves are the best, along with Underworld Werewolves, looking ones in movies.

Saw The Howling when I was 6. That left an impression for sure. Still, not as much as The Exorcist at 11. Couldn’t sleep for 2 nights after that one!

I watch The Exorcist every Halloween. It’s my all time favorite horror film exactly because the first time I watched it, I was scared 💩less. Plus, as a practicing Catholic, it hits close to home.

The crucifix scene was shocking for its time. "Let Jesus f*** you! Let Jesus f*** you! (180 degree head spin, and in Burke's voice) "You know what she did? Your c**ting daughter?"

No movie will ever shock audiences like that again. The first time I saw The Exorcist, that scene made me feel guilty just for listening to it.

Don't think I've ever watched the Exorcist completely through just for that reason. I get to scenes like that and I feel more un-nerved rather than scared.

The only other possession movies I have watched are the Exorcism of Emily Rose and An American Haunting since it was based on the Bell Witch of Adams, TN.

I love the mood of The Shining. Even when nothing is happening, it's eerie as hell. Like when Jack is sitting on the bed and the Road Runner cartoon is playing on the tv. That shouldn't be creepy .... but it is.

We’ll have to agree to disagree lol. The Exorcist is the only movie I’ve ever watched in my life where it legit affected my ability to sleep for a considerable amount of time. That’s coming from someone that has been watching horror for 26 of my 31 years of life.

I guess demonic stuff just doesn't phase me. As the other poster mentioned, the atmosphere of The Shining is pure dread and the unseen force and the descent of Jack into madness is way way scarier to me.

The Shining is a favorite of mine. I need more horror recommendations that are similar. I guess that would mean atmospheric, slow burn, depth, etc.

Longlegs is the latest movie that had that feeling to me. Also Hereditary. Midsommar to an extent. Weapons, while a fantastic film is not truly scary.

The House of the Devil should work for that and Session 9 might as well. I'd say the original Wicker Man but you've probably already seen that or at least know the reveal.

I’ve enjoyed all the VHS movies. Just watched the latest titles Halloween. It’s a bit campy at times but o find it a good collection of short horror films.

Probably the scene that most haunted me as a kid was in the Salem's Lot TV miniseries where a vampire kid is floating outside of a 2nd story window. No idea why that one bothered me so much.
